To update a WatchGuard Firebox safely, identify the exact model and current Fireware version, confirm which release is supported for that model, prepare a configuration copy and backup image, and follow the procedure for the device’s management method. There is no single “latest” Fireware version that applies to every Firebox. If your device is part of a FireCluster, use WatchGuard’s cluster-specific procedure rather than the standalone steps below.
Before you start: confirm the model, release, and management setup
Record the Firebox model, installed Fireware version, how it is managed, and whether it belongs to a FireCluster. These details determine which target release and upgrade instructions apply.
- In the Fireware Web UI, open System > Upgrade OS to check for available versions, or select your exact model on WatchGuard’s Fireware release information and software download pages.
- Read the release notes for the target version. Check model eligibility and any version-specific steps before scheduling the upgrade.
- Choose the instructions that match your management method: Fireware Web UI, Policy Manager/WatchGuard System Manager (WSM), or WatchGuard Cloud.
WatchGuard’s release information lists Fireware v2026.2.2/v12.12.2 as including important security fixes, but that does not establish that the release is available for every Firebox. Confirm compatibility for your model and consult its release notes before installing.
Prepare a backup and check management software
Save recovery files
Save a local copy of the configuration and create or confirm a backup image before a significant change. A backup image can include the configuration, certificates, passphrases, feature key, and other device-specific information. WatchGuard also recommends regularly saving backups. See Firebox Backup and Restore.

Backup contents and storage depend on Fireware version: images created in Fireware v12.2.1 and later do not include the Fireware OS and are stored on the Firebox; images created in v12.2 and earlier include the OS and are stored off-device. A backup image from a different Fireware version cannot simply be restored onto the currently installed version. Follow WatchGuard’s restore instructions and match the OS version to the image as required.
Check WSM compatibility if it manages the device
If you use WatchGuard System Manager, its version must be the same as or later than the Fireware version it manages. Upgrade WSM before upgrading managed Fireboxes. The WatchGuard upgrade guide describes the supported order and procedures.

Choose the upgrade procedure for your management method
| Management method | Where to start | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fireware Web UI | System > Upgrade OS | Install directly from WatchGuard or choose I Have an Upgrade File and provide the model’s .sysa-dl file. |
| Policy Manager / WSM | In Policy Manager, choose File > Upgrade. | Upgrade WSM first; it must be the same or a later version than the Fireware target. |
| WatchGuard Cloud | Use the Cloud-managed device’s firmware upgrade feature. | Cloud-managed deployments have a distinct procedure; consult WatchGuard’s Cloud-managed Firebox upgrade instructions. |
For FireCluster devices, follow WatchGuard’s upgrade, downgrade, and migration guidance for the cluster. Do not assume the standalone sequence applies to a cluster.
Install the update without interrupting it
- Use the route for your management method and select only the Fireware release confirmed for your model.
- Start the upgrade and leave the Firebox powered on. WatchGuard says some model upgrades can take up to 15 minutes; this is an estimate of upgrade duration, not a guaranteed network outage or service window.
- Wait for the Firebox to restart automatically and for the upgrade to finish. Do not cut power or manually restart it during installation.
WatchGuard notes that a Firebox that has been running for a long time might need a restart before an upgrade to clear temporary memory. That is a pre-upgrade consideration, not a reason to interrupt an upgrade already in progress.

Verify the Firebox and keep the recovery path
- Confirm the installed Fireware version and check that the Firebox and expected network services are operating.
- If you use Policy Manager, download the updated configuration from the Firebox after the upgrade. An OS upgrade can change the configuration, and those changes might not appear in Policy Manager automatically.
- Keep the pre-upgrade backup and note the installed version so you can identify the recovery point if troubleshooting is needed.
A downgrade is not a routine rollback: downgrading through the Web UI without restoring a backup image resets the configuration to factory defaults. Review WatchGuard’s backup-image restore guidance before attempting one.
