Do not change a ticker or contract address on appearance alone. First read the issuer’s dated notice, identify the exact token and blockchain, and compare the full contract address with the issuer’s official list. Then follow the wallet or exchange’s migration instructions, recording every deadline and pause. A name change may require no wallet action, while a contract replacement, chain shutdown, native-versus-bridged distinction, or exchange delisting can require redemption or a time-limited migration.
What an issuer change can actually mean
“The stablecoin changed issuer” is not one technical event. The notice may describe a branding update, a new smart-contract implementation, the end of support for a blockchain, a conversion into another token, or an exchange-controlled migration. The correct wallet action depends on which of these occurred.
Name or ticker change
A name change can leave the asset’s contract untouched. Circle’s September 22, 2023 notice made USDC the official name and symbol and stated: “The existing token addresses remain the same; we will not be introducing a separate token.” In that situation, a wallet may display a refreshed label after its token list updates, but adding a second contract would create a different asset rather than improve the original one.
Upgradeable contract implementation
Some tokens use upgradeable proxy contracts. Circle’s 2026 MiCA USDC White Paper explains that contract logic can change while the proxy address remains the same. A wallet user therefore cannot infer a new token from a software upgrade alone; the issuer’s notice must say whether the address, redemption process, or supported network changed.

Blockchain support ending
An issuer can stop supporting one blockchain while continuing to issue the same stablecoin elsewhere. The white paper says USDC was available on 36 blockchain networks at the document date and that Circle may discontinue support for some networks. Tether has also announced discontinued support for several implementations. The chain shown in your wallet is therefore as important as the ticker.
Native and bridged versions
Native USDC is issued by Circle on a supported network. Bridged USDC can be created by a third-party bridge and may use a similar name or symbol. The two tokens can have different contracts, redemption rights, liquidity, and exchange support even when both wallet rows say “USDC.”
Exchange migration or delisting
An exchange can stop trading, receiving, sending, or converting an old version independently of the issuer’s broader support. It may assign a new deposit address, convert balances automatically, or require you to withdraw before a deadline. Treat the exchange’s notice as a separate operational instruction, not as proof that every wallet and platform supports the same route.
Classify the event before touching your wallet
Save the issuer notice and the platform notice, including their publication dates. Use this classification to determine what you must verify.

Do not rely on a social-media post, a wallet search result, or a token logo to classify the event. A credible notice identifies the affected chain, contract, dates, and the action required from holders.
Verify the token’s full identity
Before editing a wallet or sending funds, record these four fields:
- Symbol and name: useful labels, but not unique identifiers.
- Blockchain or network: for example, Ethereum, Solana, Flow, or another supported chain.
- Full contract address: copy and compare every character; do not rely on a shortened display.
- Issuance type: native issuer-minted token or bridged representation.
CoinGecko’s stablecoin support guidance separates native issuer-minted assets from bridged tokens and requires verifiable proof from the issuer when a native contract address is added or updated. Its operations team says a contract-address update may be reviewed within 5 to 7 working days. That review period is not a migration deadline and does not make an unverified token safe to use.

Update a self-custody wallet safely
Self-custody software normally changes what it displays; it cannot rewrite a blockchain balance or reverse an incorrect transfer. Use the following sequence for each affected network.
- Open the issuer’s official token list. Select the exact blockchain named in the notice and copy the contract address from that list. If no official address is published for the network, stop rather than substituting a search result.
- Check the wallet’s network selector. Switch to the same blockchain as the verified address. An identical-looking address on another network is not an interchangeable destination.
- Add or select the verified asset. Use the wallet’s “Import token,” “Add custom token,” or equivalent function only after the chain and address match. Confirm that the wallet derives the expected symbol and decimals; a familiar symbol alone is not validation.
- Keep the old token visible. Do not hide or delete the previous entry until the issuer says whether it must be redeemed, bridged, or migrated. Visibility helps you distinguish an old balance from the replacement asset.
- Read the redemption or migration path. Some events require an issuer portal, a bridge, identity checks, proof of ownership, or a particular source network. Follow the stated sequence exactly and keep transaction hashes and confirmation records.
- Test only when the destination is explicitly supported. If the issuer or receiving platform recommends a test, send the smallest practical amount first and confirm arrival on the correct chain before moving the remainder. Never use a test transfer to experiment with an unverified contract.
- Update address books and dApp token selections. Replace saved contract references only where the application’s notice confirms the new asset. A wallet import does not update a decentralized application’s allowlist, payment setting, or accounting integration.
Example: USDC on Flow
Circle froze remaining USDC on Flow after September 3, 2024 and required eligible holders to complete a manual migration that included compliance and proof-of-ownership checks. A Flow balance could not be made usable simply by importing an Ethereum or another network’s USDC contract. The chain-specific instructions and eligibility process controlled the outcome.
Update exchange settings and saved deposit addresses
An exchange can apply different cutoffs to trading, deposits, withdrawals, and conversions. Read the asset notice line by line and create a small status record before acting.

Kraken’s notice updated October 8, 2026 provides a concrete warning: “All Smart Contract deposit methods have now expired. Any deposits made to a Smart Contract address are at risk of being lost.” It instructs customers to use the new unified EVM address and update saved external addresses. The important lesson is operational: an address that worked previously is not necessarily valid after the exchange retires that deposit method.

Coinbase’s guidance on token delistings and migrations says old asset versions are often delisted and that customers may need to move assets to a self-custody wallet by the issuer’s deadline. It warns that failure to act before the deadline may result in loss of access or value. Do not assume the exchange will perform a conversion unless its notice expressly promises one.
Before depositing after a migration
- Open a fresh deposit page for the exact asset and network; do not reuse an address copied months earlier.
- Compare the displayed chain, token name, and address with the exchange’s notice.
- Confirm that deposits are open, not merely that withdrawals or trading remain available.
- Send a small test amount only if the platform supports that route and its fee and minimum rules make a test practical.
- Wait for the required confirmations and verify the credited asset before sending the remainder.
Never send an old token to a new deposit address, or a new token to an old address, unless the platform explicitly states that the route is supported. A matching ticker is not authorization.

Create a timeline with separate entries for the final trading time, deposit cutoff, withdrawal cutoff, send or receive pause, issuer redemption end date, and exchange conversion window. These dates can differ by network and account type. Record the time zone shown by the notice and set reminders well before the final day.

A pause is not the same as a delisting. A platform may temporarily stop deposits while it updates infrastructure, or permanently retire an implementation. Resume only after a new notice confirms that the exact asset and network are open again.
Native USDC, bridged USDC, and the correct comparison

“USDC.e,” “USDC ( bridged),” and similar labels are not universal standards. Read the application’s asset details and match the full address. If an exchange accepts only native USDC, a bridged balance may need to be converted on a supported bridge or withdrawn to a wallet before any further action.
When the ticker, chain, or address does not match
Stop the transaction and work through these branches:
- Ticker matches, address differs: treat the assets as different until the issuer confirms a contract migration.
- Address matches, chain differs: verify whether the issuer deployed the same address format on multiple networks; never infer support from address appearance.
- Wallet shows a new name but the address is unchanged: this is consistent with metadata or branding maintenance; follow the issuer notice rather than importing another token.
- Exchange shows a balance but deposits are closed: check the withdrawal or conversion deadline; a displayed balance is not proof that it remains transferable.
- A migration portal requests unusual credentials or a seed phrase: stop. Legitimate support should not require you to reveal a recovery phrase or private key.
- Support gives conflicting answers: provide the exact chain, contract, transaction hash, and notice date, and request written confirmation of the supported route.
Do not “fix” a mismatch by swapping through an arbitrary decentralized-exchange pool. A pool can trade a similarly named token without proving that it is issuer-backed or accepted by your destination platform.
Security and record-keeping checklist
- Use the issuer’s official domain or a platform’s authenticated help center reached from your account, not an advertisement or unsolicited message.
- Check the complete contract address character by character and verify the network separately.
- Bookmark the dated notice and note whether its instructions apply to retail holders, institutional accounts, or a particular jurisdiction.
- Never share a seed phrase, private key, exchange password, or one-time code during a migration.
- Confirm that any approval transaction names the intended contract and limit the allowance where your wallet supports that control.
- Keep transaction hashes, screenshots, support case numbers, and the old and new addresses in your records.
- Review tax, accounting, and compliance treatment with a qualified adviser if a conversion changes the asset or realization date.
A compact decision framework
Use this order whenever a stablecoin notice arrives:
- What changed? Name, implementation, chain support, native-versus-bridged status, or exchange handling.
- Which exact asset do I hold? Record ticker, blockchain, full contract, and issuance type.
- What does the issuer require? Keep, redeem, bridge, migrate, or take no action.
- What does my platform support? Check trading, deposits, withdrawals, conversion, and saved-address rules separately.
- What is the earliest cutoff? Schedule the transfer or redemption before that date, allowing time for confirmations and review.
- What remains uncertain? Stop and ask the issuer, wallet, or exchange with the exact address and network.
This process prevents the most expensive assumption in a token migration: that two assets with the same ticker are automatically interchangeable.
