Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor Steam Deck crashes, start with the least disruptive checks: install any available SteamOS update, restart the Deck, then test the affected game with its current settings. If only one game is affected, check its compatibility status and, if needed, try the latest Proton version through that game’s properties. These steps can help isolate a problem, but they are not a guaranteed fix.
First, check whether one game or the whole Deck is affected
If a single Steam game crashes while the Deck otherwise works normally, record the game’s name and what happens when it fails. That points troubleshooting toward the game’s compatibility settings. If the Deck or multiple applications are unstable, prioritize system updates and a restart. Neither pattern alone identifies the cause.
Valve’s software troubleshooting steps apply to Steam Deck LCD and OLED models. Valve says most of the guidance should also apply to compatible third-party AMD devices running SteamOS, but recommends contacting the device manufacturer for hardware that is not a Steam Deck. Install SteamOS updates and restart
- Press the Steam button and open Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install any update offered on that screen.
- Restart using the restart option on the Software Updates screen, or go to Steam > Power > Restart.
- After the Deck restarts, try the game again before changing other settings.
Valve lists updating and restarting as first steps for system instability. A SteamOS update is separate from an update to an individual game or a change to that game’s Proton compatibility tool. Valve’s Steam Deck software guide

Close third-party Desktop Mode applications
If the unstable program runs through Steam, exit or disable third-party applications you installed through Desktop Mode, then restart and retest. This is a useful isolation step when background software may be involved; it does not establish that such an application caused the crash. Valve’s basic-use troubleshooting guide
Check the game’s Deck Verified status
Open the game’s Steam Store page and review its Steam Deck compatibility section. Valve uses four categories:
Rank #2
- Verified: The game meets Valve’s compatibility criteria for Deck.
- Playable: The game works, but may need some adjustment or have limitations noted by Valve.
- Unsupported: Valve identifies compatibility problems that prevent the game from working as expected on Deck.
- Unknown: Valve has not tested the game. This does not mean the game is necessarily broken.
Read any listed unmet requirements rather than relying on the category alone. A compatibility rating is a useful check, not a diagnosis of the particular crash you are seeing. Valve’s Steam Deck software guide
Try a different Proton compatibility tool
For a Steam game, you can override its compatibility tool in the Library. Valve’s general software guidance recommends trying the latest Proton version when troubleshooting. Treat this as a test: a different version may help a particular title, but no version is a universal fix.

- Open Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s Menu, then choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton entry available, then launch the game and check whether the crash changes.
Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the result changed. Valve notes that if only the Linux version of a game is installed, forcing Proton may cause Steam to download the Windows version instead. Valve’s Steam Deck software guide
When to lower graphics settings
If the main symptom is poor performance, or the game becomes unstable under load, try a lower graphics preset or reduce individual graphics settings. Retest after each adjustment. Lower settings can reduce system load, but do not assume they will resolve every crash. Valve’s Steam Deck software guide

Escalate persistent system problems carefully
If the Deck itself remains unstable after updating and restarting, Valve suggests optional Steam Deck Beta participation, discussion in the SteamOS or Steam Deck forums, and contacting Steam Support if the issue remains unresolved. Beta software is an optional troubleshooting route, not a required step. Valve’s Steam Deck software guide
Rollback, repair, re-imaging, and factory reset are more disruptive recovery options. Reserve them for severe or persistent system problems, and follow Valve’s SteamOS recovery guide closely. Check the local-data implications of the specific option before proceeding; do not treat recovery or reset as routine steps for a single-game crash.
