Use the PS5’s built-in updater whenever possible: Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Keep the console on reliable power, do not interrupt installation, and use only Sony’s official update file if you need USB recovery. A failed download can usually be retried without data loss; reinstalling the system software is a last resort because it erases the console.
What you need to know before updating
PS5 system software updates add features, fix faults, improve compatibility and address security issues. The safest process is uneventful: update from the home screen, let the console restart, and leave it alone until installation finishes. Most serious problems happen when power or storage is interrupted, an unofficial file is used, or the console is forced off during installation.
- Use a stable mains connection. Do not begin an update immediately before or after a known power outage.
- Keep the PS5 connected to a reliable network for an online update, or prepare a correctly formatted USB drive for a manual update.
- Do not turn off the console, unplug it or disconnect the USB drive while the update is installing. Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console.
- Use only Sony’s official PS5 update or reinstallation file. Files from another console, an altered download or an incorrectly named file may be rejected or may create additional risk.
- If the console contains important saves, make sure they are synchronized to cloud storage through your PlayStation subscription or copied to another supported backup location before using any reset option.
The normal update does not delete installed games, applications, screenshots, video clips or saved data. Data loss becomes a concern when you choose a reset or reinstallation option in Safe Mode.

Start an on-demand update
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Choose System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. Allow the console to download, restart and install without pressing the power button.
If no update is available, the PS5 will report that the system software is current. If an update is found, the download may occur before the restart and installation stage. Keep the console connected to power throughout both stages.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use automatic downloads and rest mode
Sony supports automatic downloads and installation when the PS5 is configured for updates in rest mode. To use that route, enable the automatic-download and automatic-installation settings under Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then leave the console in rest mode rather than shutting it down completely. The console still needs power and a working internet connection. Automatic installation is convenient, but the same rule applies: never cut power while the system is applying an update.
If the update download is stuck or fails
A download failure is different from an installation failure. If the update has not yet entered the installation stage, start with the retry command rather than resetting the console.
- Press the PS button to open the control centre.
- Choose Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the PS5 system-software update.
- Select View Error Info.
- Choose Try Again.
Let the retry complete on a stable connection. Repeated failures are Sony’s signal to move to the PC/Mac USB method instead of repeatedly restarting the same download. A retry does not erase games or saves.

Basic network checks before changing methods
- Restart the PS5 and try the update again.
- If possible, connect the console to the router with an Ethernet cable rather than Wi-Fi.
- Reconfigure the PS5 network settings and reconnect to the network.
- Turn off both the router and modem, wait at least five minutes, then power them back on and retry.
- Pause other heavy downloads or streaming activity on the network while the system file is downloaded.
These steps are especially relevant to error WS-116522-7, which Sony describes as an update failure in which the latest system software is not recognized. If the error remains, use another update method and verify the USB procedure below.
Install a PS5 update from a USB drive
The manual method is useful when the console cannot complete an online download. You need a PC or Mac with internet access, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a PS5 controller plus USB cable for Safe Mode. Sony’s current guide says the ordinary update file needs approximately 1.1 GB of free space on the USB drive.
Prepare the USB drive
- Connect the USB drive to the PC or Mac. Back up anything on it first; formatting may erase existing contents.
- Format the drive as FAT32 or exFAT. A file system such as NTFS is not the documented choice for this procedure.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a second folder namedUPDATE. - Download the official PS5 system-software update file from Sony’s PlayStation Support site.
- Save the file inside the
UPDATEfolder with the exact filenamePS5UPDATE.PUP. Folder names and the filename must use the documented uppercase spelling.
The final path must be exactly:
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP
Do not put the file in an extra nested folder, leave a second extension such as .PUP.zip, or rename it to a different spelling. Keep at least the approximately 1.1 GB of free space Sony specifies for the update file.

Start Safe Mode and run the USB update
- Turn the PS5 completely off. Do not leave it in rest mode.
- Insert the prepared USB drive into the console.
- Press and hold the PS5 power button. Release it after the second beep; the second beep occurs about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. Press the controller’s PS button when Safe Mode requests it.
- Select Update System Software.
- Choose Update from USB Storage Device.
- Select OK and allow the console to complete the process without interruption.
If the PS5 says it cannot find an update file, the usual causes are the wrong file system, a misspelled folder, an incorrect path, a hidden second extension, an incomplete download or insufficient free space. Recheck each item rather than changing the filename arbitrarily.

Safe Mode options and what they erase
Safe Mode is a diagnostic menu reached by holding the power button until the second beep. Its options have very different consequences. Read the exact label before confirming an operation.
| Safe Mode option | Typical purpose | Data impact | Equipment or state |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Check and repair startup or storage problems | Does not erase data, according to Sony | Safe Mode; controller connected by USB |
| Clear System Software Cache | Address certain system-feature or performance problems | Review the on-screen warning; it is not the full system reinstallation | Safe Mode |
| Rebuild Database | Reorganize database information when menus, content indexing or performance behave incorrectly | Review the on-screen choice before proceeding | Safe Mode |
| Restore Default Settings | Return settings to their defaults without a full reset | Sony says this does not delete games, applications, screenshots, video clips or saved data stored on console storage | Safe Mode |
| Reset PS5 | Return the console to its original state | Deletes all user data | Safe Mode; back up first where possible |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Remove and reinstall the PS5 system software when other methods fail | Deletes all user data and removes the installed system software | Safe Mode plus the official reinstallation file on USB |
Repair Console Storage is the non-destructive choice when the console has a startup or storage symptom. It is not a replacement for an update file and will not fix a missing or incorrectly named USB package. Cache clearing and database rebuilding are troubleshooting steps for system behavior; use the description shown on the console and do not select a reset by mistake.

A recovery ladder after an unsuccessful update
Move from the least destructive action to the most destructive. Stop when the update succeeds.
- Retry the download. Use Downloads/Uploads > View Error Info > Try Again. This is appropriate when the update is stuck at the download stage.
- Improve the connection. Restart the PS5, use wired networking if available, reconfigure network settings and restart the modem and router after a five-minute power-off period.
- Use the USB update. Download Sony’s official file on a PC or Mac, place it at
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUPon a FAT32 or exFAT drive and select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device in Safe Mode. - Repair storage or rebuild system information. In Safe Mode, use Repair Console Storage for storage or startup symptoms. Consider Clear System Software Cache or Rebuild Database for the kinds of performance or database problems those options describe.
- Restore default settings. This returns settings to defaults while preserving the games, applications and personal content Sony lists for console storage. You will need to configure settings again.
- Reset the PS5. Choose this only after backing up what you can. It deletes all user data.
- Reinstall the system software. This is the final software step and deletes the console’s data as well as the installed system software.
- Request repair. If the manual update and reinstallation fail, use PlayStation Repairs rather than repeatedly forcing the console off.
Reinstall PS5 system software as a last resort
Reinstallation is not the same as a normal update. Sony explicitly states that reinstalling the console’s system software deletes all data on the console. Treat it as a factory-level recovery operation.

Run the reinstallation
- Turn off the PS5 and connect the USB drive.
- Hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Confirm only when you have accepted that all console data will be deleted.
- Leave the console connected to power until the process finishes. Do not remove the USB drive during the installation.
Sony recommends trying the ordinary update, the USB update and less destructive Safe Mode troubleshooting before selecting this option. If you cannot back up a save, assume it will be lost when the reinstallation begins.

Fixing WS-116522-7 and USB recognition problems
WS-116522-7 can indicate that the latest system software is not being recognized. Work through these checks:
- Restart the PS5 and retry the update.
- Use an Ethernet connection where possible.
- Reconfigure the PS5’s network connection.
- Turn off the router and modem for at least five minutes, then restart them.
- Try the USB method instead of the network method.
- Confirm the drive is FAT32 or exFAT.
- Confirm the exact uppercase path
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Confirm that the file is the official update file, is complete and has no second extension.
- Confirm adequate free space: approximately 1.1 GB for the ordinary update file or approximately 1.2 GB for the reinstallation file, according to Sony’s current guides.
Do not rename a reinstallation file into an ordinary update file or use the ordinary update option for a reinstallation package. Download the package that matches the Safe Mode option you intend to select.
When Safe Mode will not start
If holding the power button does not produce the second beep or Safe Mode does not appear, check the physical connection before assuming the console needs a software reset.
- Turn the PS5 off completely and disconnect it from power.
- Check or change the power, HDMI and USB cables.
- Power-cycle the console for about 20 minutes.
- Reconnect the cables, then hold the power button again and release after the second beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable rather than relying on a wireless connection.
If Safe Mode still will not launch, or if the USB update and reinstallation both fail, stop attempting repeated forced shutdowns and contact PlayStation Repairs. Persistent failure after the documented recovery methods can indicate a hardware or storage problem that software steps cannot resolve.
How to avoid losing games and saves
A normal online update, a successful USB update and the Safe Mode option Repair Console Storage are not the same as a reset. The destructive choices are clearly labeled, but they are easy to select when troubleshooting under pressure.
- Back up or synchronize important saves before using Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Read the complete Safe Mode label before confirming. “Update System Software” and “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)” have very different outcomes.
- Keep the console powered throughout installation. A damaged installation can create a larger recovery problem than the original failed download.
- Keep a correctly prepared FAT32 or exFAT USB drive available if your internet connection is unreliable, but download the file only from Sony’s official support page.
The practical rule is simple: retry first, switch to USB second, repair storage or rebuild system information where appropriate, and reserve reset or reinstallation for a backed-up console when every non-destructive method has failed.
