Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf a game started crashing right after a Windows or graphics-driver update, try rolling back the display driver first. If there is no previous driver to restore—or rollback does not help—install a compatible driver from your GPU maker or PC manufacturer’s official support site. Driver changes can fix crashes caused by a graphics driver, but they will not solve every game crash.
Check whether the graphics driver is a likely cause
Note when the crashes began and whether they followed a Windows or graphics-driver update. Also check whether the problem affects one game or more than one. Those details can help you decide what to try, but they do not prove the driver is responsible.
If the screen flickers or displays scrambled output, Microsoft suggests checking whether Task Manager flickers at the same time. If it does, a display driver is probably involved; if Task Manager does not flicker while the rest of the screen does, an incompatible app is probably responsible. This is a clue for those display symptoms, not a definitive test for game crashes. See Microsoft’s screen-flickering guidance.
Roll back a driver after a recent update
Device Manager can restore a previous driver if Windows still has one available. You need administrator privileges.

- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics adapter, and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if the button is available. Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the game again.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, Windows does not have a previous driver available for this operation. The earlier version may never have been installed or may no longer be retained. Microsoft and Intel document the rollback steps and limitations in their Device Manager driver guidance and Intel rollback instructions.
Install a compatible driver from an official source
Use the support page for your exact GPU or computer model, and check that the package matches your Windows version. If your PC maker supplies a customized graphics driver, its package may be the better fit: OEM changes can affect features, customization, or package compatibility. Microsoft advises downloading drivers only from the manufacturer’s official site; Intel likewise recommends checking with the PC maker about customized packages.

- For a newer driver: use the GPU vendor’s official driver download or update tool, or the PC maker’s official support page.
- For an older version: choose a compatible version from one of those official sources if rollback is unavailable or did not help.
A newer release is not automatically the best choice for every game or computer. Avoid third-party driver download sites. See Microsoft’s driver download guidance and Intel’s OEM driver guidance.
Choose the right kind of installation
Start with the vendor’s standard installer. If installation fails or appears corrupted, use that vendor’s clean-install option when available. Its name, steps, and effects vary by manufacturer; do not treat one vendor’s procedure as universal.

NVIDIA: use the clean-install option in the installer
NVIDIA’s documented manual installation process uses the Game Ready Driver installer. Close other applications that could interfere, choose Custom (Advanced), select Perform a clean installation, and restart Windows after installation. These are NVIDIA-specific steps; AMD and Intel use different interfaces. See NVIDIA’s official driver page.
Intel: use the installer’s clean-install option
Intel says its clean-install option removes old drivers, restores Intel settings to their defaults, and clears the shader cache. Its support article describes a Windows 10 64-bit environment and links to separate installation guidance for Windows 10 and 11. Check your PC maker’s package as well, since an OEM may customize the generic Intel driver. Read Intel’s clean-install instructions.

AMD: use Radeon Software Clean Install when appropriate
AMD’s Radeon Software Clean Install attempts to remove detected Radeon Software and AMD drivers before installing the components you select, and it forces a reboot. AMD also lists installer errors that can occur while Windows Update is in progress or after Windows Update has reverted a driver. These are possible issues, not explanations for every failed installation. See AMD’s Radeon Software installation guidance.
Use DDU only if simpler steps are not enough
Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a more involved removal option, not a required step for every update. Intel’s instructions for Windows 10 and 11 call for downloading the utility, restarting into Windows Safe Mode, selecting the GPU and device to remove, and choosing Clean and restart or Clean and Shutdown. Have the replacement driver ready, and follow the current directions from the tool and your GPU or PC maker. See Intel’s DDU guidance.

Intel separately describes a case where residual driver files can lead a system to revert to an older Intel driver after shutdown or restart, and recommends DDU cleanup followed by installing the latest Intel driver for that scenario. Do not assume this is the cause of a rollback on other systems. See Intel’s driver-reversion guidance.

| Option | When to use it | Effort and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Device Manager rollback | The crashes began after a recent driver update. | Usually the simplest driver-specific step, but it works only if Windows retained a previous driver. |
| Official GPU or PC-maker installer | You need a newer driver or a chosen older version. | Match the exact GPU, Windows version, and PC maker’s package guidance. |
| Vendor clean installation | A normal installation is unsuccessful or seems corrupted. | Steps and effects differ among NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel. |
| DDU cleanup | Rollback and ordinary installation steps have not resolved the problem, or vendor guidance points to a cleanup. | More involved; Intel’s documented workflow uses Safe Mode. |
If the game still crashes
A driver change does not establish that the graphics driver caused the crash. If the problem remains, avoid repeating cleanup steps without a reason. Check the game publisher’s support resources and your hardware vendor’s guidance, and include when the crash began, what driver change you made, and whether other games or display symptoms are affected.
