To update Microsoft Store apps manually, open Microsoft Store and choose Library > Get updates in Windows 11, or See more (…) > Downloads and updates > Get updates in Windows 10. You can also update an individual app from its Store listing when an Update button is available.
Update Microsoft Store apps manually in Windows 11
- Open Start and select Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
The Store checks for pending updates and downloads them. Depending on the Store interface, the update control may instead be labelled Check for Updates. If Microsoft Store itself has an update, it starts installing automatically when you check for updates.
Update Microsoft Store apps manually in Windows 10
- Open Start and select Microsoft Store.
- Select See more, shown as …, in the upper-right corner.
- Select Downloads and updates.
- Select Get updates.
Windows 10 uses the Downloads and updates page rather than the Windows 11 Library path. If Windows 10 is below version 15063, Microsoft says Windows must be updated before using the Store normally, or the Store can be accessed online. Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for it.
Update one Store app instead of every app
To update a specific app, search for it in Microsoft Store and open its product page. You can also find it in the Store’s Library.

- Wait for the download and installation to finish before launching the app.
If there is no Update option, Microsoft’s current guidance treats the app as already current.
Turn on automatic Store app updates
Microsoft Store apps normally update automatically. To check that automatic updates are enabled:
- Open Start, search for Microsoft Store, and open it.
- Select your profile picture or account icon.
- Select Store settings.
- Set App updates to On.
Automatic updates are intended to deliver security patches and features without requiring a manual check. Some publishers manage updates inside their own apps, and software downloaded from a publisher’s website generally must be updated through that publisher’s updater or website.
What to do when no updates appear
A manual check that shows nothing does not necessarily mean updating is broken. Store apps normally update automatically, so there may simply be no pending updates. Other possibilities include:

- The publisher has not released a newer Store version.
- The update is not yet available for your device or region.
- The app was installed outside Microsoft Store and uses its own updater.
- The Store is signed in with a different Microsoft account.
- The Store has not refreshed its cache or has a connection problem.
If Windows recently installed an update, restart the computer before trying again. Microsoft says a restart may be required before Store apps can be installed or updated.
Reset Microsoft Store when updates fail
If Microsoft Store will not open, remains stuck, or shows a generic error, reset its cache with Microsoft’s built-in command:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter wsreset.exe.
- Select OK.
A blank Command Prompt window opens, remains for approximately 10 seconds, then closes; Microsoft Store should open automatically. The command resets the Store cache and does not remove installed apps.

When an app is missing from the Store or Library
If an app does not appear in search or in your Library, updating the Store will not necessarily restore it. Microsoft lists several possible causes:

- The app is unavailable in your country or region.
- Microsoft family settings hide or restrict the app.
- The publisher removed the app from Microsoft Store.
- The app is incompatible with your device.
- You are signed in with the wrong Microsoft account, or the account is not authorized to access the app.
An app can also become incompatible after a Windows upgrade because of architecture, security, or changed system requirements. Check the app’s Store listing for a newer version first.
Windows Update does not update every Store app
Windows Update and Microsoft Store app updates are separate systems. Installing the latest Windows update may help when the Store is failing, but it does not guarantee that every Store app will be updated. Use Microsoft Store’s Get updates or Check for Updates control for Store applications.
Not every Windows program is a Microsoft Store app. Desktop software downloaded from a vendor’s website, including programs with their own launchers or update services, generally must be updated through the vendor.
