Use your platform’s own update command first: launch Fortnite from Epic Games Launcher on PC; choose Check for Update from the PlayStation Library; select Update under Xbox’s My Games & Apps; or choose Software Update > Via the Internet on Nintendo Switch. If a season download is stuck, close the game, check Epic’s server status, restart your network and console, clear the platform cache, and retry before you reinstall.
Update Fortnite with the correct platform command
Fortnite does not use one universal update button. The launcher or console operating system controls the download, so the first step depends on where you play. Start with the procedure for your platform instead of deleting the game or changing network settings.

PC: update through Epic Games Launcher
On PC, Epic Games Launcher is the update mechanism. Open the launcher and start Fortnite. If an update is available, the launcher should begin it automatically before the game opens.
If nothing starts, fully exit Epic Games Launcher rather than merely closing the Fortnite window. Reopen the launcher, verify that the PC is still connected to the internet, and launch Fortnite again. This restart gives the launcher a fresh check for the current game files without removing your installation.

PlayStation: use Check for Update
From the PlayStation home screen, open Library and highlight Fortnite. Press the controller’s Options button and select Check for Update. Leave the console connected while it checks and downloads.
If the screen remains on “Checking for Updates,” treat that as a troubleshooting problem rather than repeatedly selecting the same menu item. Epic identifies a possible communication problem between the console and its servers for this symptom; follow the recovery sequence below.
Xbox: find the Update option
Open My Games & Apps, select See All, then open Games. Highlight Fortnite. If Xbox has an update waiting, an Update command appears. Select it and allow the download to finish before launching the game.
If the command is not shown, the console may not currently see an available package, or the download may be stalled elsewhere in the system. Continue with the server, network, restart, and cache checks rather than uninstalling immediately.

Nintendo Switch: update from the HOME menu
Connect the Switch to the internet. On HOME, highlight Fortnite, press + or −, and choose Software Update, followed by Via the Internet. Keep the console online while the update downloads.
Nintendo notes that software downloads can pause while a game is being played. If Fortnite is open in the foreground, close it completely before retrying. A download that resumes as soon as the game closes is paused, not necessarily corrupted.
What “stuck” means before you start fixing it
A season download can appear stuck for several different reasons. Distinguishing them prevents you from taking an expensive step when a simple restart would work.

- Server communication issue: A PlayStation installation can remain on “Checking for Updates” when the console is not communicating correctly with Epic’s servers.
- Paused download: On Switch, playing software can pause a download. Fortnite must be closed for the transfer to continue.
- Network condition: A router fault, unstable Wi‑Fi connection, or temporary service interruption can stop progress even when other devices appear online.
- Cache or system state: A stale platform cache or an incomplete console system update can interfere with the game’s update check.
- Damaged installation: If the earlier checks do not restore the download, the installed Fortnite files may need to be removed and downloaded again.
Before changing anything, note the exact screen or message, whether the progress indicator moves at all, and whether Fortnite is still running. Those details determine which branch of the sequence to use.

Stuck-download recovery sequence
Work through these steps in order. The early actions are quick and do not remove your game. Reinstalling is deliberately last because it requires downloading the full installation again.
- Check Epic’s server status. If Epic is reporting an incident or degraded service, a local reinstall will not solve the problem. Wait for the service issue to clear, then retry the platform update command.
- Close Fortnite completely. Do not leave the game running in the foreground while the update is expected to proceed. On Switch in particular, Nintendo says software downloads may pause while software is being played.
- Restart the download. After closing Fortnite, return to the platform’s download or update screen and start the check again. On PC, exit and reopen Epic Games Launcher before launching Fortnite.
- Restart the modem and router. Disconnect power as directed by the equipment manufacturer, allow the network equipment to restart fully, and then reconnect the console or PC. Epic lists a modem/router reset as an early step for the PlayStation “Checking for Updates” problem.
- Test the connection again. Confirm that the platform is online and retry the update. If you have access to a wired connection, use it for this download rather than relying on Wi‑Fi.
- Prefer wired LAN when possible. Epic’s PlayStation guidance specifically recommends a wired connection. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical optional choice when the console and router can be connected directly. Wired LAN removes Wi‑Fi interference as a variable; it does not bypass an Epic service outage.
- Install pending platform system updates. Check for updates to the PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch operating system and install them before trying Fortnite again. Epic includes platform updates in its console troubleshooting sequence.
- Clear the platform cache. Use the cache-clearing function documented for your console, then restart Fortnite and repeat the platform-specific update command. Epic includes cache clearing in its general console sequence, and Nintendo documents a cache reset for Switch Fortnite problems. Clearing cache is intended to remove temporary system data; it is not the same as deleting the game.
- Power-cycle or restart the console. Shut the console down, start it again, and retry the update. For Switch, restart the system after the cache reset and leave Fortnite closed while the download begins.
- Reinstall only if the update is still broken. If the server, network, system-update, cache, and restart checks make no difference, use the console’s normal delete command and download Fortnite again. Epic provides delete-and-reinstall procedures for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Reinstallation is an escalation step, not the first response to a slow or paused download.
- Contact the platform manufacturer if the console still fails. After following Epic’s sequence, persistent installation or download errors should be reported to the manufacturer of the affected console.
Platform-specific fixes for a season download that will not move
PlayStation: “Checking for Updates” does not finish
Start by checking Epic’s server status, then close Fortnite and restart the modem or router. Review the console’s network settings and retry the check. Epic’s PlayStation guidance also includes restoring licenses and using a wired LAN connection when available.
The practical order is important: a license refresh or cable change is useful only after you have ruled out a service interruption and restarted the network path. If the console can reach other services but Fortnite remains on the same screen, continue with platform system updates, cache clearing, and a full power cycle. Reinstall Fortnite only after those steps fail.
Xbox: the update is listed but remains stalled
Open My Games & Apps > See All > Games and select Fortnite. If Update is available, start it with Fortnite closed. If progress stops, restart the router, confirm the Xbox is online, install any pending Xbox system update, clear the console cache, and power-cycle the system.

Do not interpret a temporarily unchanged percentage as proof that the installation is damaged. A network restart or system restart can restore the transfer. Use delete and reinstall only when the complete sequence has failed.
Nintendo Switch: the download pauses or stays queued
Close Fortnite before troubleshooting. Nintendo specifically notes that software downloads may pause while a game is being played, so an open Fortnite session can make a healthy download look stuck.
From HOME, highlight Fortnite, press + or −, and choose Software Update > Via the Internet again. If the download does not resume, clear the Switch cache using Nintendo’s documented cache-reset function, restart the console, and retry while Fortnite remains closed. A network restart is also appropriate when the console has lost a stable connection.

PC: Epic Games Launcher does not begin the update
Exit Epic Games Launcher fully, reopen it, and launch Fortnite. The launcher should automatically start an available update. If it does not, verify the internet connection, close the launcher again, and retry after the network restart.

Because the launcher controls Fortnite’s PC update, repeatedly launching the game executable without reopening the launcher does not replace the update check. Keep the launcher open long enough for the download to begin and complete.

Wi‑Fi is sufficient when the connection is stable and the download is progressing. Switch to wired LAN when the download repeatedly stops, the PlayStation remains on “Checking for Updates,” or you need to remove wireless interference from the diagnosis. Epic specifically calls wired connection highly recommended for the PlayStation issue.
A wired connection changes only the path between your console and router. It cannot fix an Epic server incident, a missing platform system update, a stale cache, or damaged game files. For that reason, use Ethernet alongside the recovery sequence rather than as a substitute for checking service status.
Why reinstalling is the last resort
Deleting and downloading Fortnite again can replace damaged local files, but it also requires downloading the installation from the beginning. Earlier actions—closing the game, restarting the download, resetting the router, using wired LAN, updating the platform, clearing cache, and power-cycling—address common causes without removing the existing installation.
If those checks fail, follow the platform’s normal delete-and-redownload controls and allow the new installation to finish before launching Fortnite. Interrupting the replacement download or starting the game while it is still incomplete can recreate the same appearance of a stuck season update.
A quick decision checklist
- The update has not started: Use the platform-specific command, then restart Epic Games Launcher or the console.
- The percentage stopped while Fortnite is open: Close the game and retry; on Switch, active gameplay can pause the download.
- PlayStation shows “Checking for Updates”: Check Epic’s server status, restart the router, review network settings, restore licenses, and prefer wired LAN.
- All platforms fail at the same time: Check Epic’s service status before changing local files.
- Only your console fails after service and network checks: Install system updates, clear cache, and power-cycle.
- The problem survives every earlier step: Reinstall Fortnite, then contact the platform manufacturer if the console still cannot complete the installation.
What to do after the download completes
Wait for the platform to report that the update or installation is complete before starting Fortnite. Launch the game normally through Epic Games Launcher, the PlayStation Library, Xbox’s Games list, or the Switch HOME menu. If the season content still does not appear, close Fortnite once more and relaunch it after confirming that the platform shows no remaining download.
The reliable pattern is consistent across platforms: use the operating system’s own update command, keep the game closed during the transfer, and escalate from network and cache resets to reinstalling only when the lower-cost steps have failed.
