To update Final Fantasy XIV after maintenance, start the official client for the platform tied to your service account and leave it open while the patch downloads and installs. Square Enix’s Lodestone notice says, “Game clients will update automatically upon launch.” You do not normally need a separate patch file or a manual download.
Use the Windows launcher for a Windows account, Steam for a Steam account, the installed PS5 version on PlayStation 5, or the Xbox client on Xbox Series X|S. If the update does not begin, first confirm that maintenance has ended and check the service status. Then work through the platform-specific connection, system-software, and account checks below.
What to do immediately after maintenance
- Check the latest FINAL FANTASY XIV Lodestone maintenance notice and the World status page.
- Open the client on the same platform edition that is registered to your service account.
- Sign in and wait for the launcher or console client to detect the new build.
- Allow the download and installation to finish before starting the game.
- If no update appears, close and relaunch the client once, then follow the troubleshooting section for your platform.
The normal trigger is simply launching the game. Square Enix does not publish a universal patch-size or download-time figure; both vary with the update, platform, free storage, and connection quality.

Updating on Windows PC
1. Identify the Windows edition
Before opening anything, determine whether your FINAL FANTASY XIV service account is registered for the Windows edition or the Steam edition. They are separate PC versions. A subscription can be active while the wrong client reports that the account is inactive or unavailable.

- This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.
2. Launch the official Windows client
- Open the official Windows launcher.
- Sign in with the Square Enix account linked to your Windows service account.
- Wait for the launcher to check the live version and begin downloading.
- Keep the launcher open until downloading, verification, and installation complete.
- Start the game only after the launcher presents the normal Play button or equivalent ready state.
The launcher may spend time verifying files after the download. Do not interrupt it simply because the progress bar appears to pause; disk verification can make network activity fall to zero temporarily.
3. If the Windows launcher still says maintenance
First compare the message with the newest Lodestone notice. Maintenance windows can be extended, and a client can continue to display a maintenance state while the service is not yet available to that platform. Check World status as well. If the official status shows an ongoing issue, waiting is the correct action rather than reinstalling.
If maintenance has ended globally but your launcher remains on the same message, close the launcher completely, wait a moment, and relaunch it. Confirm that your operating system has a working internet connection and that security software is not blocking the launcher’s network access. Do not download a random patch from a third-party site.
4. Avoid the Windows/Steam client mismatch
Do not switch casually between the Windows launcher and Steam. Square Enix warns that an incorrectly matched client can show an inactive-subscription message even when the subscription is active. Return to the client for which the service account is registered. If you bought or registered the Steam edition, start the game from Steam; if you use the Windows edition, use the official Windows launcher.
Updating through Steam
1. Start with Steam, not the standalone launcher
- Open Steam and sign in to the account that owns FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- Open your Library and select FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- Start the game from Steam and allow Steam to apply any queued update.
- When the game launcher opens, leave it running while the client update downloads and installs.
Steam may first update its own files and then hand off to the FINAL FANTASY XIV launcher. Both stages must finish. If Steam reports a pending download, let that operation complete before troubleshooting the game client.
2. If Steam shows the game as current but FFXIV will not update
Exit the game and restart Steam, then launch FINAL FANTASY XIV again. Confirm that Steam is online rather than in Offline Mode. If the account message says the subscription is inactive, stop and check the edition association instead of repeatedly entering payment or subscription details. A Windows account cannot be made to work by launching the Steam build, and a Steam account cannot be corrected by launching the standalone Windows build.
If the launcher says maintenance is still in progress, use the Lodestone notice and World status as the authority. A Steam file check or reinstall cannot make an unavailable service come online.

Updating on PlayStation 5
1. Start the installed PS5 version
- On the PS5 home screen, select the installed FINAL FANTASY XIV game.
- Start it after the announced maintenance window has ended.
- Accept the update prompt if the console displays one and leave the download running.
- Wait for copying, installation, and any in-client file verification to finish.
Keep the console connected to power and avoid starting another large download at the same time. The console can complete the network download before it finishes copying files to storage.
2. Test the PS5 connection
If the patch fails or repeatedly stops, open the PS5 network settings and run the built-in internet connection test. A successful test does not guarantee that every route to the game service is healthy, but a failed test identifies a local network problem that must be fixed first.
3. Update PS5 system software and restart
- Open the PS5 system settings and check for the latest system software.
- Install any available system update.
- Restart the PS5 fully rather than relying only on Rest Mode.
- Launch FINAL FANTASY XIV again and retry the game update.
Out-of-date console software can prevent a game update from applying even when maintenance has ended.
4. Stabilize the network
If the download remains unstable, restart the router or modem, then retry. Square Enix also advises checking router security settings and required ports where appropriate. Make changes only if you understand the router’s controls; disabling security broadly is not a reliable fix. A wired connection or a stronger wireless signal can reduce interruptions, but the official guidance does not require special networking hardware.

When the PS5 client continues to fail, record the complete error code and message before contacting Square Enix Support. The Support Center’s PS5/PS4 disconnection guidance states that, when there is no ongoing maintenance or issue, “it is possible there is a transmission or connection error.” Providing the code, your platform, and the time of the failed attempt helps support distinguish a service outage from a local connection failure.
Updating on Xbox Series X|S
1. Launch the installed Xbox client
- Open the installed FINAL FANTASY XIV client after maintenance.
- Allow the Xbox update to download and install automatically.
- Do not start the game until the console reports that the update is complete.
Xbox updates can be handled by the console before the game opens, followed by additional client files after launch. Leave both phases uninterrupted.
2. Reinstall from the Microsoft Store when necessary
If the client is missing, damaged, or cannot be restored through the normal update flow, obtain it through the Microsoft Store, the official Xbox distribution channel documented by Square Enix. Square Enix’s client-download guidance says, “Please visit the Microsoft Store and download the client directly from there.” Avoid unofficial installers.

3. Use general service and connection checks
The official material does not publish a separate Xbox error-code workflow. Apply the general checks first: verify that maintenance has ended, confirm the Xbox is online, restart the console and network equipment if the connection is unstable, and retry. If the same error persists, contact Square Enix Support with the exact code and the point at which the update failed.

Do not assume that maintenance ending means every platform receives the build at the same second. Rollout can be staggered. In Square Enix’s Oct. 13, 2026 Lodestone notice, PS5 and Xbox were listed first, followed by PS4, and then Windows, Mac, and Steam at separate times. The notice’s order is the reliable reference for that maintenance event; it does not establish a permanent order for every future patch.
If your friend can log in on a different platform while your launcher still reports maintenance, compare the announced platform times before changing files or reinstalling. A staggered rollout is expected behavior, not evidence that your installation is broken.
Diagnosing an FFXIV update that is stuck
The launcher is stuck at maintenance
- Read the latest Lodestone maintenance notice, including any extension or follow-up post.
- Check World status for a continuing service issue.
- Confirm that your platform’s rollout time has arrived.
- Close and relaunch the correct client only after the service is available.
The download does not start
- Confirm that the computer or console can reach other online services.
- Restart the launcher or console once.
- Check available storage; an update needs room for downloaded and temporary files.
- Pause other large downloads and retry.
- On PS5, run the network test; on Xbox, verify the console’s online status; on PC, confirm that Steam or the Windows launcher is not offline.
The progress bar stops during installation
A pause can represent file verification or copying rather than a failed download. Watch for disk activity and allow the process time to complete. Interrupting verification can leave the client needing another repair or download. If the process shows an explicit error, record it and use the platform-specific recovery steps instead of repeatedly force-closing the client.
The client says the subscription is inactive
On PC, treat this first as an edition mismatch. Confirm whether the account is registered for Windows or Steam and launch that exact version. Do not purchase another subscription merely because the wrong client displays an inactive message.
The update fails after a network change
Restart the affected router or modem, reconnect the console or PC, and retry. On PlayStation, review router security settings and required ports as Square Enix recommends. If the problem appears only on one network, compare with a known-good connection where practical; if it follows the account across networks, keep the error details for Support.
Storage, timing, and what Square Enix does not promise
Patch size and download duration are not universal specifications. Square Enix’s cited notices do not publish one standard size or a guaranteed completion time. The actual requirement changes with the patch, platform, free storage, drive speed, server load, and internet connection. Plan for additional time after the download because consoles and PC launchers may copy, verify, or install files separately.
Do not interpret a long download as proof that maintenance is still running. Use the status notices to separate service availability from local installation speed. Conversely, do not assume a short download means the update is complete; wait for the client’s ready state.
Quick Recap
Account and platform rules that prevent avoidable errors
- Windows and Steam are separate PC editions. Match the launcher to the edition registered in Mog Station.
- Console clients must be downloaded and updated through their platform’s official distribution system.
- A current subscription does not override an incorrectly matched PC client.
- Maintenance completion, platform rollout, and your local download are separate stages.
- Support can act more quickly when you provide the platform, client edition, maintenance notice, exact error text, and time of failure.
Final post-maintenance checklist
- Read the newest Lodestone notice and confirm your platform’s rollout window.
- Check World status for an active outage or extended maintenance.
- Launch the correct edition: Windows launcher, Steam, PS5, or Xbox.
- Keep the client open until download, verification, and installation finish.
- Check free storage and pause competing downloads if progress is slow.
- Run the relevant network test and restart network equipment when the connection is unstable.
- Install current PS5 system software when updating on PlayStation 5.
- Use Microsoft Store for an Xbox reinstall when the client is missing.
- Record any exact error code before contacting Square Enix Support.
