To update Reg-suit’s baseline screenshots, regenerate the intended screenshots in your project’s configured actualDir, run npx reg-suit run, and inspect the HTML comparison report. The run publishes the current actual images under the snapshot key; those published images become the expected images for a later run. Review differences before treating the new snapshots as the baseline.
Update the baseline with Reg-suit’s normal workflow
- Regenerate actual screenshots. Make the intended UI change and run your project’s screenshot-generation process so the images in the configured
actualDirreflect the updated UI. Reg-suit compares these project-supplied images; it does not create them itself. - Run Reg-suit. From the project root, run
npx reg-suit run, or use the equivalent local CLI command configured by your project. - Review the HTML report. Inspect each difference and decide whether it is an intended visual change or an unexpected regression.
- Publish the intended snapshot. When the run’s actual images are the ones you want subsequent comparisons to use, publish that run to the configured storage with the correct snapshot key.
The official documentation describes no separate approve, accept, or update-baseline command. Its documented workflow is to run the comparison and publish the actual images; published snapshots from one execution are used as expected images on the next run. See the Reg-suit README and official Puppeteer demo.
What npx reg-suit run does
The run command combines the main workflow steps. The precise key and storage behavior depends on the key-generator and publisher plugins configured in your project.
sync-expectedfetches previously published images using the expected key from the configured key-generator and publisher.comparecompares those expected images with the images inactualDirand creates an HTML report.publishpublishes the comparison result and actual images to external storage using the current snapshot key. The combinedrunworkflow can also send notifications if they are configured.
A visual difference is a signal for review, not by itself proof that the run should fail or that the baseline should change. The demo explains that the team must judge whether the difference is intended.

Check the project configuration and snapshot key
Reg-suit’s README places regconfig.json in the project root. Its example sets core.actualDir to images, core.workingDir to .reg, and core.thresholdRate to 0.05, alongside Git-hash key generation and an S3 publisher. These are example values, not universal defaults: use your project’s configured paths, threshold, key-generator and storage plugin.
actualDiris required and identifies the screenshots to compare.workingDiris optional temporary storage; the README’s example uses.reg, ordinarily ignored by Git.- The key-generator determines which prior snapshots Reg-suit fetches and which key is used when publishing the current images. Ensure the run uses the branch or commit context that corresponds to the baseline you intend to update.
The README lists S3 and Google Cloud Storage publisher plugins. The Puppeteer demo uses S3 for snapshot images and HTML reports. Those are supported examples, not requirements for every project. The demo shows initial setup with npx reg-suit init and revisiting plugin setup with npx reg-suit prepare --plugin publish-s3.

Handle Git-based baselines correctly in CI
When your key-generator relies on Git hashes, Reg-suit needs enough branch and commit information to resolve the comparison key. CI environments that check out a detached HEAD or only a shallow history may not provide what the configured key-generator needs. The Reg-suit README’s GitHub Actions example checks out with fetch-depth: 0 before running the CLI.
- Confirm that the intended base branch is available in the CI checkout.
- Make sure the job has branch context rather than only a detached commit, using the checkout method appropriate to your CI provider.
- Run
npx reg-suit runonly after the correct Git context is available, then verify the report and published key.
The README also shows CI-specific workarounds for Travis CI, Wercker, AppVeyor and GitLab CI; use the instructions for your provider and project configuration rather than copying a GitHub Actions setting blindly.

Troubleshooting baseline updates
- The report shows every image as new or has no expected image to compare. Check whether the expected snapshot key can be resolved and whether the configured publisher contains images for it. Confirm the correct branch/commit context and that the relevant baseline was previously published.
- The images do not reflect the UI change. Regenerate the screenshot files before running Reg-suit, and verify that the output path matches
core.actualDir. - The comparison runs against an unexpected baseline in CI. Check the active branch, base branch availability, commit history depth and key-generator configuration. Detached HEAD or a shallow checkout can prevent correct Git-based key resolution.
- The command cannot retrieve or publish snapshots. Verify the selected publisher plugin and its project configuration and access to the configured storage. For S3 projects, the README and demo document the S3 publisher setup.
- A difference appears but should not be accepted automatically. Open the HTML report and inspect the changed regions. Publish the run as the new baseline only when the actual images represent the intended UI.
Version note
The Reg-suit GitHub releases page lists v0.14.6 as its latest release, while the npm package page surfaced v0.14.5. Because those pages disagree, this guide uses the project’s standard npx invocation without prescribing a version. Check the releases page and npm package page for the version available when you install.
