You can edit some YouTube live-stream settings while the broadcast is running, but whether you can change a particular field depends on how you started the stream. In Live Control Room, webcam streams have an Edit option for settings that YouTube says can be changed while live. Encoder and mobile streams also have metadata controls, but YouTube does not confirm that every field is editable after those streams start. Changing listing details is also different from replacing the audio or video feed being sent by an encoder.
First identify what you want to update
“Update the live stream video” can mean either changing information attached to the stream or replacing the content viewers are watching. The steps and certainty differ:
- Stream settings or metadata: Examples include tags, monetization, chat settings, and listing details. Some settings can be edited while live, depending on the streaming method and field.
- The incoming audio/video feed: This is the video and sound an encoder is sending to YouTube. YouTube’s documentation cited below does not establish that you can swap this feed without interrupting the broadcast.
If you need to correct a title, description, thumbnail, or another specific field, check whether that field is available in the active stream’s controls before relying on a change. YouTube’s documentation does not promise that every such field can be changed during an active broadcast or that an edit appears immediately to every viewer.
Edit settings while the stream is live
For a webcam stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the current webcam stream and select Edit.
- Find the setting you want to change, make the edit, and save it.
- Check the stream’s management view to confirm the saved setting.
YouTube’s Create a live stream via webcam instructions specifically name tags, monetization, and chat settings as examples of options managed with Edit. YouTube says, “You can change these settings at any time, whether your stream is live or not.” That statement applies to the documented webcam settings; it does not establish that every listing field or the live feed itself can be changed this way.

For an encoder or mobile stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Open the active stream in the relevant Stream or Manage view.
- Open stream settings and select Edit if it is available.
- Check for the specific field you need, save the change, and confirm it in the management interface.
YouTube’s Manage live stream settings page documents editing metadata from stream settings or while scheduling. It does not explicitly guarantee that every metadata field remains editable after an encoder or mobile stream is already live. Treat the field shown in your active stream’s controls as the practical test.
What to do if the field or feed cannot be changed
If the setting is not editable
Keep the current broadcast running if ending it would cause a bigger problem. If appropriate, post the correction in live chat or communicate it through another channel. Do not assume that general instructions for editing an uploaded video apply to a live broadcast: YouTube’s uploaded-video editing guidance describes editing video details after upload, not the availability of every field during a live stream.

If you need to replace the actual video or audio
Editing metadata does not replace an encoder’s outgoing audio/video feed. The YouTube instructions cited here do not confirm that a feed can be switched without interruption. Check the behavior of your encoder and stream setup before attempting a change that could stop or disrupt the broadcast.
If you want an edited version of part of the stream
You can create a highlight while the stream is live or after it ends, using YouTube’s Create a highlight instructions. A highlight is a separate edited video; it does not replace or revise the live feed viewers already saw.

Protect the recording if you may need to edit it later
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its live-stream archive guidance recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. After the broadcast, you can manage the archive in Studio, but an archive edit should not be treated as a change to what viewers saw live.
