Rescue the Hunter, place him at your base, and use his Drying Rack. Reptile Hide from Snapjaws and Salt are the two materials you need; the rack turns them into Reptile Leather.
The unlock path at a glance
Reptile Leather is not made at a general crafting bench. You unlock its production by recruiting Athalan Skree, the Hunter, then using the Hunter’s Drying Rack at your base. The complete progression is:

- Reach the Ancient Vault – Hunter.
- Complete the “Hunter Becomes The Hunted” quest and recruit Athalan Skree.
- Place the Hunter at your base.
- Make the Hunter’s Drying Rack available through his workstation progression.
- Obtain Reptile Hide from Snapjaws and collect Salt.
- Load the materials into the Drying Rack.
The recipe itself is straightforward once the Hunter and his station are available, but the Hunter recruitment step is the actual unlock gate.
1. Recruit Athalan Skree, the Hunter
Find the correct Ancient Vault
Athalan Skree is found in the Ancient Vault – Hunter. This is the Hunter-specific vault associated with his recruitment, so make sure you are pursuing the Hunter rather than another survivor or workstation quest.

Complete “Hunter Becomes The Hunted”
Recruitment occurs through the “Hunter Becomes The Hunted” quest. Follow that quest until Athalan Skree is rescued and can be placed at your base. Until this is complete, the Hunter’s workstation list—and therefore the Drying Rack progression—will not be available to you.
Place the Hunter at your base
After the rescue, place Athalan Skree in your base as an available artisan. The Drying Rack belongs to the Hunter’s workstation progression, so simply knowing where the Hunter is located is not enough; he must be recruited and active at your base before you can use his crafting stations.

2. Unlock and place the Drying Rack
Check the Hunter’s workstation list
Open the Hunter’s available workstation options after placing him. The Drying Rack is part of that list. If it is not immediately available, continue the Hunter’s workstation quests and progression rather than looking for the recipe at a different crafting station.
Build and place the station
Once the Drying Rack is available, build it and place it inside your base. Reptile Leather is crafted at this station; it is not produced directly from the character inventory, the basic workbench, or another artisan’s station.
Keep the rack accessible while gathering materials. A placed station is also useful for checking whether the recipe is visible before you return with a large stock of hides and Salt.

3. Gather the two recipe ingredients
Reptile Hide comes from Snapjaws
Snapjaws are the documented drop source for Reptile Hide. Hunt Snapjaws until you have enough hide for the number of leather batches you intend to make. The hide is the limiting creature-derived ingredient in this recipe, so collect it before planning a large production run.
One batch consumes one Reptile Hide. If you want ten batches, you need ten Reptile Hide; if you want 30 batches, you need 30. The conversion does not consume multiple hides per batch.
Collect Salt
Salt is the second ingredient in the Reptile Leather recipe. The recipe requires three Salt for each Reptile Hide, so plan your supply in multiples of three. For example, ten batches require 30 Salt, while 30 batches require 90 Salt.
The available recipe information identifies Salt as an ingredient but does not establish one universal Salt location in the game world. Use the Salt source available in your current progression and verify the amount in your inventory before starting the rack.
4. Craft Reptile Leather at the Drying Rack
With the Hunter placed, the Drying Rack built, and both ingredients in your inventory, use this exact recipe:

- Interact with the placed Drying Rack.
- Select Reptile Leather from the available recipes.
- Confirm the batch when the rack shows one Reptile Hide and three Salt as the required inputs.
- Allow one minute for the batch to finish.
- Collect the three Reptile Leather produced by that batch.
The conversion is three-for-one: one hide and three Salt produce three leather, not one leather. If you queue ten batches on one rack and keep it running continuously, the processing time is ten minutes and the result is 30 Reptile Leather.
How much material should you prepare?
Use the following planning table when you are farming for a specific number of batches. These figures are direct multiples of the recipe and assume one Drying Rack operating one batch at a time.

Use the rack’s displayed queue and completion state as the final authority while crafting. The table is only a preparation aid; it does not change the recipe or imply that multiple racks are required.
What Reptile Leather is used for
Reptile Leather is a common, level-13 crafting material. The official recipe table lists it in equipment recipes for several play styles:

Because the material appears across armor and backpack recipes, it is worth producing more than the exact amount for one item when you are actively upgrading several equipment slots. At the same time, the level-13 designation identifies this as an early- to mid-progression material rather than a universal substitute for higher-level reptile components.

Reptile Leather versus Water Reptile Leather
Water Reptile Leather is a separate material. The names are similar, but the two items use different hides, belong to different level ranges, and support different downstream recipes.

Do not place Water Reptile Hide into the early Reptile Leather plan and do not expect Water Reptile Leather to satisfy a recipe asking for ordinary Reptile Leather. The shared Drying Rack and Salt ingredient do not make the materials interchangeable.
Why Reptile Leather may not appear in the Drying Rack
The documented information confirms the Hunter quest, the Drying Rack, the ingredients, the yield and the one-minute processing time. It does not establish a separate hidden trigger that controls the first appearance of the recipe in the interface. If the recipe is missing, use this order of checks:
Confirm the Hunter is actually recruited
Verify that you completed “Hunter Becomes The Hunted” and that Athalan Skree is placed at your base. Finding the Ancient Vault or reaching the quest area alone does not substitute for recruitment.
Confirm you are using the Hunter’s Drying Rack
Open the station placed through the Hunter’s workstation progression. Reptile Leather belongs there; checking another station can make the recipe appear to be unavailable when the issue is simply the wrong workstation.

Continue the Hunter’s workstation progression
If the Hunter is present and the rack exists but the recipe is still absent, continue the Hunter’s workstation quests. The available evidence does not prove that a particular hidden quest flag is required, so treat this as a practical troubleshooting step rather than a documented additional unlock condition.
Carry Reptile Hide, then reopen the menu
Obtain at least one Reptile Hide from a Snapjaw, return to the Drying Rack, and reopen its recipe menu. This refresh step is useful when the interface has not populated a recipe list after a workstation or quest change. It is practical guidance, not a confirmed game rule.
Check the item name carefully
Look for Reptile Leather, not Water Reptile Leather. The two entries can be confused because both are made at a Drying Rack and use Salt, but they are distinct level-13 and level-40 materials.
A reliable farming and crafting workflow
- Finish the Hunter’s recruitment quest before farming a large amount of hide.
- Place Athalan Skree at your base and unlock the Drying Rack through his workstation progression.
- Interact with the rack once to verify that Reptile Leather is listed.
- Farm Snapjaws for the exact number of Reptile Hide needed for your planned batches.
- Gather three Salt for every hide rather than stopping with an uneven Salt total.
- Return to the rack and start batches in sequence.
- Use the one-minute processing time to gather more materials or continue other base tasks, then collect the finished leather.
- Reserve the resulting level-13 material for the Ranger, Cutthroat, Adventurer, Mage, Healer, Tank or Medium Backpack recipes that require ordinary Reptile Leather.
