In June 2016, Facebook Messenger hid a football keepy-uppy game behind a soccer-ball emoji: send the emoji in a chat, then tap it. The game was reported for Messenger’s iOS and Android apps, not the web version. These are historical instructions; current Messenger availability has not been verified.
How to unlock the football game
- Update the Messenger app on your iOS or Android device.
- Open a conversation with a friend or a group.
- Send the football/soccer-ball emoji as an emoji, not as a sticker.
- Tap the emoji you sent in the conversation to launch the mini-game.
Contemporaneous reports described these steps in June 2016. If tapping the emoji does nothing in a current Messenger build, the historical reports do not establish that the feature is still available.
How the Keepy Up game worked
Known as “Keepy Up,” the mini-game challenged players to keep a football in the air by tapping or swiping repeatedly. Scores appeared in the chat thread, where friends could compare results and challenge one another. It was a score-chasing game played through a conversation, rather than a standalone football simulator.
What made it different from Messenger’s game catalog
The football game was a hidden, emoji-triggered promotion. Later Messenger Instant Games used a game-controller icon and let people select titles from a visible catalog, according to Meta’s announcement of Instant Games. That distinction matters: the Euro 2016-era football game was not unlocked through a general games menu.

When and where it was available
Facebook introduced the mini-game in June 2016 alongside Euro 2016 and Copa América. Contemporary coverage said it worked in Messenger’s iOS and Android apps; TIME/Trusted Reviews reported that it did not work in the web version. Those reports describe the feature at launch and do not confirm availability in Messenger today or in every region.
Why Messenger added it
The football mini-game followed an earlier basketball game tied to March Madness and the NBA season. In a statement reproduced by The Indian Express in June 2016, Messenger lead David Marcus said the basketball game had been played over one billion times during its first three months, then announced the football game for Euro 2016 and Copa América.
