Yes. Valor Mortis opens free roam after you defeat the final boss and let the credits finish. Reload your save, return to the final-fight room, speak with Lucjan beside the Lantern, then choose Travel at that Lantern. You can select any Lantern you previously kindled and resume unfinished quests, collectible hunts, Amber gathering, upgrade-material runs, and exploration.
What happens after the ending
Valor Mortis does not strand you in the final area or force you to begin a new playthrough for cleanup. Once the ending credits have completed, loading the game places William back in the room where the last battle began. Lucjan is there with a Lantern, providing the post-game route to earlier regions.
The free-roam state is best understood as a cleanup loop rather than a separate campaign chapter. You return to locations you already reached, open paths that were inaccessible earlier, and finish optional content at your own pace. Your access is based on Lanterns you have kindled during the story; the Travel menu is not a fresh world map with every destination automatically unlocked.
Exact unlock sequence
Follow these steps in order. The menu option appears only after the ending sequence has been allowed to complete.

- Defeat the final boss. Finish the encounter and proceed into the ending sequence instead of quitting out immediately.
- Let the credits finish. The game uses the completed credits sequence as the transition into its post-game state. If you leave before it ends, the return point may not be available yet.
- Load back into the game. Reload your completed save after the credits. You should materialize in the room where the final fight began.
- Locate Lucjan. Lucjan is standing beside a Lantern in that room. You do not need to search an earlier hub or retrace the route to the boss arena.
- Speak with Lucjan. Complete his conversation so the post-ending interaction is available.
- Interact with the Lantern. Use the Lantern next to him rather than trying to open a normal pause-menu map.
- Select Travel. Choose Travel, then pick one of the Lanterns you discovered and kindled previously.
The destination list is the practical test that free roam is active: earlier regions appear as selectable Lantern points, and choosing one moves you out of the final-fight room without restarting the story.
Where to find the post-game Lantern
It is in the final-fight room
The first return location is deliberately simple. After the credits, do not look for Lucjan in a settlement, at the Abandoned Church, or near the last boss’s exterior approach. The game places him in the room used for the final confrontation. The Lantern is immediately beside him, making the pair the visual marker for the free-roam transition.
Talk before using the menu
Approach Lucjan and trigger his dialogue before interacting with the Lantern. The Travel command is tied to this post-ending state, so repeatedly activating the Lantern without speaking to him first can make it seem as if the feature is missing.
Choose a previously kindled destination
Lantern Travel works from the network you established during the campaign. A region you visited but whose Lantern you never activated will not necessarily be offered as a destination. If a location is absent, return is not proof that the area is permanently sealed; it usually means that its Lantern was never kindled or that you have not reached its normal access point.
What free roam lets you do
Finish side quests
Optional character stories and errands that survived the finale can be completed after the ending. Travel to the relevant region, check the local route and NPC locations, and follow the quest’s remaining objective. The post-game state is intended for unfinished side-quest work, so reaching the credits does not by itself erase every optional task.

Collect missed items and Ambers
Earlier areas remain useful for collectible cleanup. Ambers can be hidden away from the main route, and many are unlikely to be found in a single normal playthrough. Use Lantern Travel to revisit branches you skipped, dead ends that looked inaccessible, and rooms that required a movement or combat option you did not yet possess.
Gather upgrade materials
Late-game cleanup is also a resource run. Revisit older routes for upgrade materials and inspect side paths rather than traveling only to the objective marker. A completed story gives you a reason to sweep familiar zones methodically: materials and missed pickups are often located off the critical path.
Open routes blocked earlier
Abilities obtained later in the adventure can change what is reachable in a region you have already cleared. The developer describes this design directly: “Abilities you unlock later open up areas you have already visited.” Treat every blocked passage as a possible post-game target, then return with the appropriate Transmutation instead of assuming it is decorative or permanently unavailable.
The University point of no return
The most important timing warning comes before the ending sequence. In University, the Lantern immediately before the Captain Raphael of the Nephtis Superioris encounter is the last normal opportunity to fast-travel before the finale temporarily takes over.
What changes after Raphael
Entering Raphael’s arena and completing that encounter triggers a cutscene that takes William into Napoleon’s Prison. During that sequence, Lantern Travel is disabled. You cannot use the normal network to jump back to earlier regions while the ending route is in progress. Travel returns only after the final boss has been defeated and the credits have finished.

How to use the warning
Before starting Raphael’s fight, activate the nearby Lantern and make any cleanup trip you still want to do with unrestricted travel. Check unfinished quests, collect obvious nearby Ambers, spend or gather upgrade materials, and mark blocked routes for a later ability-based sweep. Once you are satisfied, return to the University Lantern and proceed to Raphael.

Should you clean up before or after the final boss?
There is no need to force a complete collectible run before the finale. The choice depends on whether you value uninterrupted travel now or access to late abilities later.
Clean up before Raphael when travel convenience matters
The pre-Raphael window is the smoothest time to move around because the Lantern network is still operating normally. Use it for objectives that are already accessible, especially quests with a nearby deadline or a route you understand well. You can also reduce the amount of unfinished work in your journal before committing to the ending.
Wait for post-game when route access matters
Post-game cleanup is stronger for physical exploration. Late Transmutations can open passages that were blocked during your first visit, so returning too early may require two trips: one to inspect the area and another after the relevant ability is available. If a collectible appears to be behind an ability gate, record its location and include it in the post-game circuit.
Use a two-pass plan
A practical approach is to do an early convenience pass, then a complete ability-based pass after the credits. First, finish anything close to the Raphael Lantern and resolve quests whose objectives are already clear. Later, travel region by region from the final-fight Lantern, checking every newly reachable branch and collecting resources as you go.

A reliable post-game cleanup route
- Confirm the return point. After loading the completed save, identify Lucjan and the Lantern in the final-fight room.
- List your open work. Review unfinished side quests, missing collectibles, unclaimed Ambers, upgrade-material needs, and areas that contained blocked routes.
- Travel by region. Select one discovered Lantern and finish that area’s accessible tasks before moving to the next destination.
- Recheck ability gates. When a route previously stopped you, return with the late Transmutation that could change the traversal requirement.
- Search away from the critical path. Examine optional rooms, elevated or branching routes, and dead ends that were not necessary for the story.
- Close the loop. After clearing a region, use its Lantern to move to the next known destination rather than walking through completed zones again.
This order limits backtracking while preserving the reason to revisit older maps: the abilities and resources you possess after the ending are different from those available on the first pass.
How Lantern Travel fits into the campaign
Lantern Travel is not a feature that suddenly appears only after the finale. It is introduced earlier, after you defeat General Lothaire, reach the Abandoned Church, and activate the Lantern there. That first activation establishes the system used for later movement between discovered points.
If you already used the Abandoned Church Lantern during the story, the post-game interaction should feel familiar. The difference is the location of the access point: after the credits, Lucjan’s Lantern in the final-fight room becomes your departure point for the cleanup loop.

The credits were skipped or interrupted
Return to the completed save only after allowing the credits to finish. If you quit during the transition, reload and let the sequence run to its end before checking the final-fight room again.

The post-game Lantern is not placed at the Abandoned Church or at the entrance to Napoleon’s Prison. Recheck the room where the final battle began and look for Lucjan standing beside the Lantern.

Lucjan is present but Travel is unavailable
Speak with Lucjan first, then activate the Lantern. The required interaction is the Lantern’s Travel command, not a general map screen. If the menu still does not change, reload the completed save after the credits rather than continuing from an earlier checkpoint.
A destination is missing
Lantern Travel lists discovered points, not every region in the game. Return to the missing region by its normal route and kindle its Lantern if you never activated it. A blocked path inside a known region is a separate traversal issue and may require a late Transmutation.
Travel is disabled after Raphael
That behavior is expected during the Napoleon’s Prison portion of the ending route. The restriction is temporary. Continue through the finale, defeat the final boss, finish the credits, and use the post-game Lantern beside Lucjan.

What is known about New Game Plus
Free roam and New Game Plus are separate questions. The free-roam procedure described here is available after the ending. A guide has reported a planned New Game Plus addition for the fourth quarter of 2026, but a planned release window does not establish that the mode is playable on a particular date. Do not treat New Game Plus as a prerequisite for returning to the map or for collecting missed content.
Post-game checklist
- Defeat the final boss.
- Allow the credits to complete.
- Reload the completed save.
- Find Lucjan in the final-fight room.
- Speak with him.
- Use the adjacent Lantern and choose Travel.
- Select a previously kindled Lantern destination.
- Finish side quests and inspect optional routes.
- Collect missed Ambers and other items.
- Gather upgrade materials.
- Revisit ability-gated areas with late Transmutations.
Bottom line
Valor Mortis supports free roam after the final boss, but the unlock is tied to the completed ending sequence. Let the credits finish, reload into the final-fight room, talk to Lucjan, and use his Lantern’s Travel option. For uninterrupted travel before the finale, do your last normal fast-travel run at the Lantern immediately before Captain Raphael in University; after Raphael, travel is suspended until the post-game return point becomes available.
