The unlock route depends on the crossover. Hatsune Miku, Joker and Ichiban Kasuga were announced as free-update racers, while Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants and PAC-MAN content is premium DLC. Connect the game to the internet, install the current game update, and make sure the relevant add-on entitlement is attached to the same platform account that owns the game. Then choose the guest racer and, where available, the paired machine from the game’s racer and machine-selection screens. The exact menu names and button prompts can vary by platform, so do not assume that every character follows one universal sequence.
Which crossover characters are free and which require DLC?
SEGA has used two different distribution routes for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The guest racers announced as free updates do not use the same entitlement as premium Season Pass content. The crossover packs for Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants and PAC-MAN are described as premium DLC, whereas Hatsune Miku, Joker and Ichiban Kasuga were announced as free-update racers.

SEGA’s announcement says the Digital Deluxe Edition contains the Season Pass. It identifies the physical Standard Edition as the base game, but does not say that the Standard Edition includes the Season Pass. Check the edition and platform listing you are buying before expecting premium crossover characters to be included.

What you need before trying to unlock a guest racer
- A current game installation. Let the console or PC finish downloading the latest game update before looking for a new racer.
- The correct platform account. Free add-ons and purchased DLC must be claimed or installed for the account and platform on which you play.
- Internet access when claiming an add-on. This is explicitly documented for Hatsune Miku and is a sensible first check for any newly announced content.
- The right entitlement. A free-update racer is not automatically evidence that you own a premium Season Pass pack, and owning the base game does not by itself prove that a paid crossover pack is installed.
If you play from a disc, the disc edition still determines which base game you own, while the platform store account normally handles downloadable add-ons. Keep the region, platform and edition consistent when checking an entitlement; a purchase or download associated with a different account will not necessarily appear in the game.

How to claim a free-update crossover racer
The official pages reviewed do not publish a single, menu-by-menu sequence for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo or PC. Use the following platform-neutral process, then follow the labels shown by your current version of the game.
- Close and update the game. Start the platform’s update process and wait until the download and installation have completed. Restart the game after the update if it was open while the patch installed.
- Sign in to the account that owns the game. If the platform has more than one profile, use the profile that purchased the game or claims its downloadable content.
- Connect to the internet. For Hatsune Miku, SEGA states: “An Internet connection is required to claim add-ons.” Do not treat an offline launch as proof that the racer is unavailable.
- Claim or install the add-on if the platform presents one. Some platforms show a separate free add-on, while others fold the update into the game download. Confirm that the download completes rather than stopping at an announcement or store page.
- Launch the game and open a mode that allows racer selection. Use the game’s current racer-selection screen; the exact heading and button prompt are not documented universally by SEGA.
- Highlight the crossover racer. If the character is installed and your account has the right entitlement, the guest racer should be available in the roster presented by the game.
- Choose the associated machine when you want the signature pairing. Select the machine from the machine-selection screen if it is offered separately. A character and a machine are related content, but selecting one does not justify assuming that every other crossover pack is owned.
This procedure separates the three things that are easy to confuse: downloading a game update, claiming an add-on and selecting a racer. The cited announcements confirm the characters and their machines, not a universal button-by-button path.
Hatsune Miku: claim the free update and use the Diva Macchina
What SEGA confirms
SEGA’s official update dated September 22, 2025 identifies Hatsune Miku as a free-update racer and names her signature machine as the Diva Macchina. The same notice gives the concrete claim requirement: “An Internet connection is required to claim add-ons.”
Practical unlock steps
- Install the latest Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds update on the platform where you play.
- Connect that platform to the internet and sign in with the account that owns the game.
- Claim or install the Miku add-on if your platform lists it separately. Wait for the platform to report that the add-on is installed.
- Open the game’s racer-selection screen and look for Hatsune Miku in the roster.
- At machine selection, choose the Diva Macchina when you want her named signature vehicle.
SEGA also listed a Miku Festival for October 3–6, 2025 (UTC+8). That schedule is historical and should not be treated as a current requirement for unlocking Miku. The racer’s free-update entitlement and any time-limited festival rewards are separate matters.
Joker: use the Arsène Wing after the October 2025 update
Availability and machine
SEGA announced Joker’s free update as live on October 23, 2025. The associated machine is the Arsène Wing. If Joker is missing, first verify that the game has actually installed the update released for your platform rather than relying on the date of the announcement alone.

Do not confuse Joker with the Festival reward track
SEGA’s announcement describes a Joker Festival beginning October 24, 2025. It says Festival Points could earn exclusive in-game items. Those event rewards are not the same entitlement as the announcement that Joker himself is available in the free update. You should not need to earn Festival Points merely to establish whether the free-update racer is installed.
Selection steps
- Update the game and restart it after the installation finishes.
- Use the platform account associated with your game license.
- Open a mode with racer selection and check the roster for Joker.
- Open machine selection and choose the Arsène Wing if you want the named pairing.
The reviewed official material does not state a current requirement to complete a race, event or challenge before Joker appears. Treat a missing Joker as an update or entitlement problem first, not as evidence that you failed a Festival objective.
Ichiban Kasuga: what is known and what is not
SEGA’s June announcement pairs Ichiban Kasuga with the Dragon Brave and describes him as part of the free-update crossover plans. The cited material does not establish his current release status and does not provide exact menu steps or a confirmed live date. That means an announcement of Ichiban is not, by itself, proof that the racer is presently downloadable on every platform.
To check your copy without guessing, install every available game update, reconnect to the platform store, and look for an official add-on or in-game roster entry. If neither appears, check the latest platform-specific release information rather than buying the Season Pass on the assumption that it is required. The available evidence classifies Ichiban with the announced free-update racers, not with the separately described premium Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants and PAC-MAN DLC.
How premium crossover DLC works
Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants and PAC-MAN crossover content is described by SEGA as premium DLC. That is a different route from the free guest-racer updates. You need both the base game and the relevant paid entitlement, unless your edition already includes it.

- Identify the exact pack. Check the platform store listing for the crossover content you want, including its platform and region.
- Check your edition. SEGA’s announcement says the Digital Deluxe Edition contains the Season Pass. The physical Standard Edition is identified as the base game, with no statement that it includes the Season Pass.
- Purchase or redeem the correct entitlement. Use the same account that runs the game. A store download on another account may not unlock the roster for your profile.
- Download and install the DLC. A completed purchase is not the same as a completed installation. Confirm the add-on appears in the platform’s installed-content list where that list is available.
- Start the updated game and open racer selection. The exact screen name is platform-dependent; use the current on-screen labels rather than a guide written for another system.
Do not infer that a free-update character is included in the Season Pass, or that buying the Season Pass grants every future free update. SEGA describes those routes separately.
Selecting a crossover racer and machine
Once an entitlement is installed, selection is normally a two-part choice: the racer and the machine. The official notices confirm these pairings:
- Hatsune Miku — Diva Macchina.
- Joker — Arsène Wing.
- Ichiban Kasuga — Dragon Brave.
Open the game mode in which you intend to race, move through the available racer roster, and confirm the selection. If the game presents machines on a separate screen, choose the machine there. If your version combines both choices on one screen, follow its displayed prompt. Because SEGA’s reviewed pages do not document a universal menu path, a guide cannot responsibly name one fixed sequence of buttons for every console and PC configuration.
If a named machine is absent while its character is present, verify that the update or DLC installation completed and return to the machine-selection screen after restarting the game. Do not assume that a machine listed in an announcement is a separate paid purchase unless the platform’s current entitlement page says so.

The game starts offline
Reconnect the platform before claiming the add-on. Miku’s official notice makes an internet connection an explicit claim requirement. After connecting, restart the game and check the roster again.

The update is listed but not installed
Pause other downloads, allow the game update to finish, and relaunch the game. A news card or store announcement does not guarantee that the playable content has been installed.
You own the base game but cannot find a premium character
Check whether the character belongs to the premium crossover DLC group. Verify the exact pack or Season Pass entitlement on the same platform account, then install it. The Standard Edition is described as the base game; the Digital Deluxe Edition is the edition SEGA says includes the Season Pass.
You bought DLC on a different account or platform
Confirm the account, platform and region attached to the purchase. Downloadable entitlements are not automatically portable between unrelated platform accounts, and an edition purchased on one platform does not establish ownership on another.
The character was announced but is not available
Distinguish a planned release from a confirmed live entitlement. Ichiban Kasuga is the clearest example in the cited material: his free-update pairing and Dragon Brave are announced, but the reviewed sources do not establish his current availability. Look for a current official release notice or a platform add-on listing instead of treating the original announcement as a live guarantee.

Festival Points and exclusive event items are event rewards. Joker’s announcement separates those rewards from Joker’s availability in the free update. Historical event dates should not be used as evergreen unlock instructions.

What the announcements establish about the game’s rollout
SEGA’s October 23, 2025 Joker announcement reported more than 1 million units worldwide, counting physical units and digital downloads across platforms. That is a sales figure reported on that date, not a current lifetime total and not a measure of how many players have unlocked a particular crossover racer.
The same date context matters for event information. Joker’s Festival was announced to start October 24, 2025, and Miku’s Festival was listed for October 3–6, 2025 (UTC+8). Those dates explain the original promotional schedule; they do not create a permanent requirement to participate in an event before selecting either racer.
A reliable decision path
When you are unsure why a crossover is unavailable, classify it before changing settings:

- Premium crossover? Check the DLC or Season Pass entitlement and confirm installation. This is the route described for Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants and PAC-MAN content.
- Announcement only? If the source gives a planned pairing but no current release confirmation, do not assume that the character is live on your platform. Ichiban’s current status is not established by the cited material.
- Character installed but machine missing? Restart after installation and inspect machine selection separately. The named machine pairing is confirmed, but the exact interface can differ by platform.
This approach prevents the most common mistake: treating every crossover as if it were unlocked through the same paid pack, festival, challenge or menu sequence.
