Dragon’s Dogma 2 has 10 vocations. Fighter, Archer, Mage and Thief are available when you create your character. Warrior, Sorcerer, Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer require specific quests, NPC conversations or story-state conditions. You rank each vocation to 9 by fighting, then spend Discipline Points (DEP) at a Vocation Guild or an inn that offers vocation services to buy skills and augments.
This guide gives the unlock route for every vocation, explains how vocation ranks and augments work when you change class, and lists every Maister teaching, its tome and the condition for obtaining it. The four advanced vocations—Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer—are restricted to the Arisen; Fighter, Archer, Mage, Thief, Warrior and Sorcerer can also be assigned to pawns.

How vocations, ranks and Discipline Points work
A vocation is Dragon’s Dogma 2’s combat class. It determines which weapons, core skills and weapon skills you can equip, while your character level remains a separate progression track. Defeating enemies earns vocation experience for the vocation you are currently using. When that vocation gains a rank, new skills and augments become available for purchase.

#1 Best Overall
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories.
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
- Pre-order Bonus: Superior Weapons Quartet
- Character level: your overall level and statistics.
- Vocation rank: progress within the current class, capped at 9.
- Discipline Points (DEP): the currency used at vocation services for class unlocks, skills and augments.
- Augments: passive abilities you unlock through a vocation rank and can continue using after changing class.
- Weapon skills: active attacks that remain tied to their compatible vocation and weapon.
Your main pawn progresses independently, so changing your own vocation does not change the pawn’s vocation rank. A hired pawn keeps the vocation, skills and augments selected by its owner.
Every vocation at a glance
| Vocation | How it becomes available | Weapons and restrictions |
|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Available at character creation | Sword, mace and shield; usable by the Arisen or a pawn |
| Archer | Available at character creation | Bow; usable by the Arisen or a pawn |
| Mage | Available at character creation | Staff; usable by the Arisen or a pawn |
| Thief | Available at character creation | Daggers; usable by the Arisen or a pawn |
| Warrior | Complete Vocation Frustration and return the greatsword to Klaus in Vernworth | Greatsword or hammer; usable by the Arisen or a pawn |
| Sorcerer | Complete Vocation Frustration and return the archistaff; Feast of Deception can also unlock it | Archistaff; usable by the Arisen or a pawn |
| Mystic Spearhand | Speak with Sigurd in Melve or Harve, or meet him through the relevant story or dragon route | Duospear; Arisen-only |
| Magick Archer | Complete Put a Spring in Thy Step | Magick bow; Arisen-only |
| Trickster | Speak with Luz, the Oracle, at the Reverent Shrine in Battahl | Censer; Arisen-only |
| Warfarer | Complete The Sotted Sage by giving Lamond three Newt Liqueurs | Mixed weapons; Arisen-only |
The first four choices are immediate, but selecting one at creation does not lock you into it. Once another vocation is unlocked, you can change at a guild or qualifying inn and keep the augments you have earned.
Unlocking the six restricted vocations
Warrior
Go to Vernworth and take the vocation-unlock quest Vocation Frustration. Follow the quest until you obtain the required greatsword, then return that greatsword to Klaus in Vernworth. Warrior becomes available at vocation services after the hand-in. It uses a greatsword or hammer and can be assigned to a pawn.
Sorcerer
Vocation Frustration also supplies the Sorcerer route. Return the required archistaff to Klaus to unlock the vocation. Sorcerer can alternatively unlock during the story quest Feast of Deception, so a character who reaches that point before finishing the equipment hand-in has another documented route. Sorcerer uses an archistaff and is pawn-eligible.
Mystic Spearhand
Find Sigurd in Melve or Harve and speak with him. Depending on your story state, you may meet him through the relevant story or dragon encounter instead; that conversation can provide the vocation. Mystic Spearhand uses the duospear and is restricted to the Arisen, so it cannot be selected for a pawn.
Magick Archer
Complete Put a Spring in Thy Step. After the quest is complete, Magick Archer appears in the vocation services menu. Its weapon is the magick bow, and the vocation is Arisen-only.
Trickster
Travel to Battahl and speak with Luz, the Oracle, at the Reverent Shrine. That conversation unlocks Trickster, which fights with a censer and is available only to the Arisen. Luz’s physical form on the shrine roof is also relevant to the Trickster Maister teaching described below, so return to the shrine area when you are pursuing the ultimate skills.

Warfarer
Start The Sotted Sage and give Lamond three Newt Liqueurs. Completing that requirement unlocks Warfarer. The vocation lets the Arisen combine weapons from other vocations, but it cannot be assigned to a pawn. Keep extra weapon types available in storage because Warfarer’s flexibility also creates the largest inventory burden.
Rank #2
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
How to rank a vocation and buy its skills
- Reach a service point. Visit a Vocation Guild or an inn that explicitly offers vocation services.
- Unlock or select the class. Choose an unlocked vocation. If it is newly available, spend the required DEP to register it before purchasing its skills.
- Equip compatible gear. Put on the weapon and armor appropriate to that vocation. Store gear for classes you are not using so a switch does not overload your carry weight.
- Fight while using that vocation. Enemy defeats award vocation experience to the active class. Continue until the next rank is reached.
- Spend DEP at the service menu. Buy newly exposed weapon skills, core skills and augments as your rank rises. Rank 9 is the cap.
- Revisit the guild after a rank-up. The skill list expands as ranks increase; unspent DEP can be used later, so you do not have to buy every option immediately.
Vocation rank and character level do not advance as the same track. A high-level Arisen can still have a low-rank vocation, while a lower-level character can have a vocation close to rank 9 if that class has been used consistently.
What remains when you change vocation
Unlocked augments remain available after you switch. This is the main reason to rank several vocations: passive benefits earned in one class can be selected while you play another. The active weapon skills work differently. A weapon skill is usable only when both the required vocation and its matching weapon are equipped.
For example, changing from Warrior to Mage does not let you equip Warrior greatsword skills on a staff. You keep any Warrior augments you unlocked, but you must select Mage skills and use a staff. Before changing, place unused vocation-specific weapons and armor in storage; carrying a full set for every class can push you over the inventory limit.

Maister teachings and ultimate skill tomes
Maister teachings are separate from ordinary vocation skills. A Maister is an NPC associated with a vocation who gives a special tome after an affinity condition, quest, location visit or story event. Receiving the tome and using it are two separate actions: obtain it from the NPC, then open your inventory and use or read it so the corresponding Maister skill is learned. If you only collect the tome, the skill is not yet applied.
| Vocation | Maister and requirement | Tome and teaching |
|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Lennart in Melve; affinity or the Readvent of Calamity route can lead to the reward | Soldier’s Code — Riotous Fury |
| Archer | Taliesin | Heavenly Shot |
| Mage | Trysha after Spellbound | Conjurer’s Jottings — Celestial Paean |
| Sorcerer | Eini after Spellbound; Myrddin has a separate Sorcerer’s Appraisal route | Enchanter’s Almanac — Meteoron; Myrddin’s route provides Maelstrom |
| Thief | Flaude and Srail at Nameless Village | Blades of the Pyre and Formless Feint |
| Warrior | Beren after Claw Them Into Shape and Beren’s Final Lesson | Champion’s Fable — Arc of Might |
| Trickster | Luz at the Reverent Shrine; reach her physical form on the roof | Theurgist’s Rite and Dragon’s Delusion |
| Mystic Spearhand | Sigurd after improving affinity or encountering him through the dragon route | Paladin’s Enigmata — Wild Furie |
| Magick Archer | Cliodhna after Put a Spring in Thy Step | Spellbow’s Paradox — Martyr’s Bolt |
| Warfarer | Lamond after The Sotted Sage | Grandmaster’s Path — Rearmament |
Managing affinity and changing NPC locations
Maister rewards are not all simple shop purchases. Lennart’s reward can depend on affinity or on the Readvent of Calamity quest, Sigurd’s availability depends on where your story has taken him, and Luz’s teaching requires reaching the physical form on the shrine roof rather than stopping at the initial Oracle conversation. NPC movement and quest state can therefore change when a teaching is available. If a Maister does not offer the tome, check the named prerequisite, return after the relevant quest stage and speak to the NPC again rather than assuming the vocation is bugged.

Choosing the right vocation for your party
There is no universal best vocation. Choose according to the role you need, whether the character is the Arisen or a pawn, and how much equipment management you want to tolerate.
| Vocation | Combat emphasis | Party and equipment considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Close-range weapon and shield combat | Reliable front-line pawn choice; carries one primary melee setup |
| Archer | Bow-based ranged attacks | Ranged pawn option; avoids the close-range commitment of Fighters and Thieves |
| Mage | Support and curative spell emphasis | Useful when the party needs magical support; staff is the defining weapon |
| Thief | Daggers and mobile close combat | Pawn-eligible option for players who prefer speed and short-range pressure |
| Warrior | Heavy greatsword or hammer attacks | Pawn-eligible, but weapon weight and slower heavy-weapon handling shape the build |
| Sorcerer | Offensive spell emphasis | Pawn-eligible damage caster; archistaff required |
| Mystic Spearhand | Duospear combat with hybrid Arisen play | Arisen-only, so it cannot fill a hired-pawn slot |
| Magick Archer | Magick-bow ranged offense | Arisen-only and distinct from the conventional bow of an Archer |
| Trickster | Illusions, control and creating openings for pawn damage | Arisen-only; its value depends on using illusions while your pawns deliver the direct damage |
| Warfarer | Switching among multiple weapon types | Broadest weapon flexibility, but lower basic stats and the greatest inventory demand |
Mage and Sorcerer are the most important role distinction for a spell-focused party: Mage leans toward support and curative work, while Sorcerer emphasizes offensive spells. Trickster is a control-oriented choice rather than a direct damage replacement, and Warfarer trades some basic-stat efficiency and convenience for the ability to carry and use several weapon types.
A practical progression plan
- Start with a creation vocation that matches your immediate role. Fighter supplies a shielded front line, Archer provides a bow, Mage supplies staff-based support, and Thief supplies daggers. You can change later, so this is a starting tool rather than a permanent decision.
- Unlock Warrior and Sorcerer through Vocation Frustration. Return the greatsword and archistaff through the quest’s required hand-ins. If Sorcerer remains unavailable, the Feast of Deception route is an alternate documented unlock.
- Use the first unlocked class to build a shared augment pool. Rank a vocation, buy useful augments, then switch when you want a different combat role. The augments remain available across the change.
- Plan travel around the Arisen-only quests. Speak with Sigurd for Mystic Spearhand, complete Put a Spring in Thy Step for Magick Archer, visit Luz in Battahl for Trickster and finish The Sotted Sage with three Newt Liqueurs for Warfarer.
- Collect Maister tomes after the associated quests. Keep the tome in mind as a separate reward step, then use it from inventory before checking the vocation skill list.
- Store equipment before experimenting. A multi-vocation character needs more weapon types than a single-class build. Storage prevents unnecessary encumbrance when testing a new vocation.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The vocation is not listed at the guild
Confirm that the unlock quest was completed and that the required item was actually handed to the named NPC. Warrior and Sorcerer depend on the correct greatsword or archistaff hand-in; Warfarer depends on giving Lamond all three Newt Liqueurs. For Arisen-only vocations, check that you are trying to unlock them for the Arisen rather than for a pawn.

Mystic Spearhand NPC cannot be found
Sigurd can be encountered in Melve or Harve, and his availability can shift with the relevant story or dragon route. Search both locations and account for your current story state before abandoning the unlock.
Sorcerer is still unavailable after starting the story
Finish the Vocation Frustration equipment return, or progress to Feast of Deception, which provides the alternate Sorcerer route. The two routes are alternatives documented for the vocation, not two different Sorcerer classes.
A Maister gave a tome but no skill appeared
Receiving the item is not the same as learning the teaching. Open the inventory and use the tome. Then visit vocation services and check the appropriate vocation’s skill list. Also verify that the NPC prerequisite—such as Spellbound, Claw Them Into Shape or Put a Spring in Thy Step—was completed.
A weapon skill disappeared after switching
That is expected when the new class does not match the skill. Weapon skills require their compatible vocation and weapon. Switch back to the original vocation and equip its weapon to use the skill again; augments, in contrast, remain available.
A pawn cannot use an advanced vocation
Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer are Arisen-only. Assign a pawn one of the six pawn-eligible vocations—Fighter, Archer, Mage, Thief, Warrior or Sorcerer—instead.
Quick Recap
Checklist for a complete vocation collection
- Have the four creation vocations registered: Fighter, Archer, Mage and Thief.
- Complete Vocation Frustration and return the required greatsword and archistaff for Warrior and Sorcerer.
- Use the Feast of Deception Sorcerer route if you prefer that story timing.
- Speak with Sigurd in Melve or Harve for Mystic Spearhand.
- Finish Put a Spring in Thy Step for Magick Archer.
- Speak with Luz at the Reverent Shrine in Battahl for Trickster.
- Give Lamond three Newt Liqueurs during The Sotted Sage for Warfarer.
- Rank each vocation through rank 9, spending DEP on the skills and augments you actually intend to use.
- Collect and use each Maister tome separately from the ordinary guild purchases.
- Remember that augments carry over, but weapon skills do not, and that the Arisen-only classes cannot be assigned to pawns.
