Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo uninstall Shift Browser in Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Shift, open its three-dot menu, and select Uninstall. If that fails, try Control Panel’s Programs and Features. A window opening at sign-in, a leftover shortcut, and the app being installed again are different problems, so check which one you are seeing before troubleshooting further.
Uninstall Shift Browser from Windows 11
- Save your work and close Shift.
- Open Start, search for Add or remove programs, and open the result. Alternatively, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Shift, select the three-dot menu beside it, and choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the security prompt if one appears, then follow the uninstaller’s instructions.
- When the uninstall finishes, restart Windows. Shift recommends restarting after removal. Its support article describes Shift as appearing alongside installed programs; that does not make it a built-in Windows component. Shift’s uninstall instructions were updated April 6, 2026.
If the uninstall fails
Note the exact error message and when it appears—for example, before the uninstaller opens, during removal, or after a restart. The right next step depends on that detail; there is no single fix established for every uninstall error.
- Restart the PC and try the uninstall again from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- If the app offers repair or reset options in Windows, try the relevant option and then attempt removal again. These options are not available for every desktop app.
- Use the Control Panel fallback: open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select Shift, and choose Uninstall. Windows also supports uninstalling an app from Start > All apps when it is listed there. See Shift’s uninstall guidance and Microsoft’s Windows app-removal instructions.
- If Windows reports an uninstall error that persists, Microsoft’s uninstall guidance points to its Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. Tool availability and instructions can vary; Microsoft’s article distinguishes Windows 11 guidance from legacy Windows 10 troubleshooter steps. Follow guidance for your specific error or contact Shift support.
If Shift appears to come back
Identify what “comes back” means before changing anything. A Shift window at sign-in, an entry in Installed apps, a leftover shortcut, and a new install prompt are not interchangeable symptoms.
A Shift window opens when you sign in
Check Settings > Apps > Startup or open Task Manager > Startup apps. If Shift is listed, turn off its startup entry. Windows also supports managing startup apps through startup folders. A startup entry can launch an app that is still installed; disabling it does not uninstall the app.

If Windows instead shows “We couldn’t find this app,” the startup entry may point to an app that has already been removed or whose path no longer exists. Microsoft documents startup controls and this kind of stale entry in its Windows startup-app guidance.
Shift is listed in Installed apps again
That is different from a startup entry or shortcut. Check whether the PC is managed by an employer or school, whether another person uses it, and what happens immediately before Shift appears again. Those facts can help identify whether someone or something installed it; the app’s return alone does not establish a cause.

A shortcut remains after uninstall
A leftover shortcut does not by itself show that the app is installed or running. Check Installed apps and Startup separately to confirm whether Shift remains installed or configured to open at sign-in.
Do not delete registry entries as a routine cleanup step
Windows includes registry locations for startup applications, but Microsoft cautions that editing the registry can have unintended consequences. Prefer the Settings and Task Manager controls; if a registry entry is suspected, seek Shift or Microsoft support rather than deleting keys as a first step. Any expert-directed registry change should be preceded by a backup. Microsoft’s startup guidance explains the available controls and the registry risk.

Be cautious with manual data-folder cleanup
A separate Shift support page for Shift v9 says to close the app, uninstall it, and delete C:Users<user>AppDataLocalShiftData. That is version-specific guidance, not a universal instruction for current Shift Browser. Do not delete that folder unless you have confirmed that the installed version is v9 and are following the matching vendor instructions; manual deletion can remove local app information. The current Shift Browser uninstall instructions do not require it. See the current Windows uninstall article and Shift v9 instructions.
When to run a security scan
The fact that Shift is unwanted or seems to return does not prove it is malware. If you have a concrete reason to suspect unwanted software, Microsoft recommends uninstalling the unwanted software and running a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan. If it persists, Microsoft also points to Defender Offline. Follow Microsoft’s guidance on unwanted software; do not treat recurrence alone as evidence of infection.
