To uninstall a Steam demo, open Steam, go to Library, select the demo, choose Manage, click Uninstall, and confirm. That removes the demo’s installed program files. If storage is still occupied afterward, inspect only that demo’s folder. Saves, settings, logs, mods, and Steam Cloud data can be stored separately, so remove those only when you deliberately want to erase personal data or progress.
The safe order of operations
Use Steam’s own uninstall command before touching folders. It knows which library entry belongs to the demo and avoids deleting files used by another game.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Click the installed demo you want to remove.
- Open Manage and choose Uninstall, then confirm the prompt.
- Restart Steam, or switch views and return to the Library, to refresh the installed-state display.
- If the expected space has not returned, use Manage > Browse local files when that option is available, or open the Steam library folder yourself. Inspect only the selected demo’s directory.
Do not start by deleting the entire Steam library, the steamapps folder, or the userdata tree. Those locations can contain other games, saves, settings, and cloud files.

Choose the result you actually want
Uninstalling the demo’s installed content and deleting every trace of the demo are different jobs. Decide which outcome applies before removing anything else.

What the normal uninstall removes—and what it may leave
The uninstall command targets the demo’s installed content in the Steam library. It does not prove that every file associated with the demo has disappeared.

Steam allows developers to customize which files a game synchronizes. Consequently, two demos can store their saves or settings in different places, and a standard uninstall cannot be assumed to remove all of them.
Windows: uninstall the demo and check the library folder
Remove the installed content
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Select the demo in the left-hand list or Library view.
- Open Manage, choose Uninstall, and confirm.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then close and reopen Steam or otherwise refresh the Library.
The common default Steam location on Windows is C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamapps, although a user may have added another library drive. Do not assume the default path is the active one; use Manage > Browse local files when available so you can identify the correct library.
Find a leftover installed-file directory
- Open the demo’s Library page and choose Manage > Browse local files, if Steam still offers that command.
- If the command is unavailable, open each Steam library location you knowingly use and look for the directory associated with that demo.
- Confirm the folder belongs to the demo by checking its contents and the Library title before deleting anything.
- Delete only that directory, then empty the operating system recycle bin if you need the space immediately.
- Restart Steam and verify that the demo is not shown as installed.
Never delete a whole library folder to remove one demo. A library can contain many games and the metadata Steam uses to track them.

Preserve files during a full Steam removal
If your goal is to remove the Steam application rather than one demo, Steam’s support guidance warns that the process removes Steam and installed game content. Move the entire steamapps folder somewhere safe first if you need to preserve downloaded games. This precaution is for a broad Steam removal; it is not required for the normal uninstall of a single demo.
macOS: the application bundle is not the whole installation
Remove a demo through Steam first
While Steam is open, use the same Library > Manage > Uninstall route. Quit Steam after the uninstall completes, then reopen it to confirm the Library state and available disk space.
Clean up Steam itself without losing the library
Dragging the Steam application to Trash alone does not fully uninstall Steam. Steam stores additional files in Library/Application Support/Steam. If you are removing Steam rather than merely removing a demo, quit Steam and inspect that location. To keep downloaded games and local save files, Steam identifies SteamApps as the folder to preserve while deleting the other Steam files. Make a separate copy before changing anything if the data matters.

Linux and Steam Deck: separate native and Proton data
Uninstall the demo
- Open Steam in desktop mode or the regular Steam interface.
- Open Library, select the demo, choose Manage, and click Uninstall.
- Refresh Steam and check the library’s storage view.
- Use Manage > Browse local files where available before considering manual deletion.
Linux installations can use native game locations or per-game Proton prefixes. A leftover prefix or a game’s own save directory is not necessarily the same as the installed demo directory. Identify the demo’s Steam app ID and consult that game’s documented storage behavior before deleting save data.
Steam Deck considerations
On Steam Deck, perform the uninstall from the Steam client first. If you switch to desktop mode to inspect files, be careful not to confuse the internal drive with a microSD-card library. Inspect only the library containing the demo, and leave other compatdata, shader, or game directories untouched unless you can positively identify them as belonging to the demo.
Steam Cloud and the userdata folders
Steam Cloud data is separate from installed program files. Steam documents local Cloud data under an account-and-app hierarchy. The default locations are:

Within userdata, Steam organizes data by your Steam account ID and the game’s app ID. The developer determines which settings, saves, profile statistics, or other files are synchronized. The path therefore tells you where to look, not which files are safe to erase.

Keep Cloud data for a future reinstall
Uninstall the demo’s local content and leave the relevant Cloud data alone. When you install the demo again under the same Steam account, Steam may restore synchronized files according to the game’s configuration. This is the least destructive choice if you are removing the demo temporarily or want to preserve progress.
Erase Cloud or local saves deliberately
- Back up any save or configuration file you might want later.
- Determine the demo’s app ID and identify its folder under the correct account ID.
- Compare the files with the game’s own documentation or support information; do not delete an entire account directory.
- Remove only the demo’s files, and understand that a later Cloud synchronization may restore files that still exist on another device.
If Steam displays a Cloud conflict, do not choose an option at random. A conflict means files changed in two locations without synchronization. Consider the timestamps and your recent play history, then keep the copy that contains the progress or settings you actually want. Deleting a local folder before resolving the prompt can make the unwanted version win.

Manual cleanup is appropriate only after Steam’s uninstall has completed and you still have a specific residual file to remove. Use this sequence:
- Write down the demo’s exact Library name and the drive on which it was installed.
- Open its Steam page and use Manage > Browse local files if available. This is safer than guessing a path.
- Inspect the directory for files that clearly belong to the demo. Do not remove shared redistributables, common tools, or a parent folder containing several games.
- Search only locations documented for that particular game when looking for saves, settings, logs, or mods.
- Move questionable files to a temporary backup folder instead of permanently deleting them. Launch another game from the same library to make sure it still works before emptying the backup.
Do not delete Steam’s library metadata or the entire userdata directory merely because a demo’s folder is hard to identify. Those actions can affect unrelated titles and account profiles.

Why disk space may still be missing
The uninstall has not finished refreshing
Steam can take a moment to update its Library and storage calculations. Restart Steam, then check the library’s storage view again before making manual changes.
Files were added outside the install directory
Mods, logs, crash reports, screenshots, and settings may live in a game-specific user-data location. They are separate from the installed executable files. Remove them only if your goal includes personal-data cleanup.
Cloud data was mistaken for local game files
Cloud synchronization is represented in the account-and-app folders under userdata. Removing the installed demo does not necessarily remove that synchronized data, and deleting it can affect a later reinstall.

Steam supports multiple library locations. Check the drive shown by Browse local files or Steam’s storage manager rather than inspecting only the default Windows directory.
Steam itself is being removed
A full Steam uninstall is broader than a demo uninstall. On Windows, preserve steamapps first if you need installed games. On macOS, preserve SteamApps inside Library/Application Support/Steam when following a full-removal procedure.

A final removal checklist
- Use Library > Manage > Uninstall before opening a file manager.
- Refresh or restart Steam and confirm the demo is no longer installed.
- Check the correct library drive if storage usage does not change.
- Use Browse local files to identify the demo directory instead of guessing.
- Leave other game folders, shared files, library metadata, and the complete
userdatatree alone. - Decide separately whether saves, settings, logs, mods, or Cloud data should remain.
- Resolve any Steam Cloud conflict by comparing timestamps and recent play before deleting either copy.
- Before removing Steam itself, move or back up
