To uninstall a Mac app and stop it from running after you close it, first use the app developer’s uninstaller if one is provided. Then remove the app itself and check both Open at Login and App Background Activity in macOS settings. These are separate controls: one starts an app when you sign in; the other permits work while the app is not open.

Choose the right removal route

Where the app came from determines how to remove it. Before deleting anything, quit the app and look in its folder or menus for a developer-provided uninstaller or removal option. Apple identifies the uninstaller as the best way to remove related login items, extensions, and other data that may be stored outside the app itself. Follow its prompts when available. Apple’s app removal guidance

App or situation Recommended route
The app includes a developer uninstaller or removal feature Run that first and follow its instructions.
Downloaded from the App Store, with no developer uninstaller Use Launchpad’s Delete control if it is available for the app.
Installed from another source, with no developer uninstaller Use Finder to move the app to the Trash.
App required by macOS or located in the System folder Do not try to remove it through Finder; macOS protects required software.

Apple’s instructions cover both uninstalling apps on a Mac and deleting apps on a Mac. An app’s own uninstaller should take precedence over simply deleting its app bundle.

Remove the app itself

Use the developer’s uninstaller when available

Check the app’s folder in Applications (or your user Applications folder) and the app’s own menus or settings for an uninstall, remove, or reset option. This matters because helper components and other related data may live outside the main app bundle. Do not substitute manual deletion of unfamiliar Library or system files for the developer’s instructions.

Delete an App Store app with Launchpad

  1. Quit the app.
  2. Open Launchpad and locate the app.
  3. Use its Delete control if shown, then confirm the deletion.

The Launchpad Delete control is available for apps downloaded from the App Store; it will not be offered for every app. See Apple’s instructions for deleting or uninstalling apps.

Move another app to the Trash in Finder

  1. Quit the app.
  2. In Finder, open Applications, or the user Applications folder where the app was installed.
  3. Move the app to the Trash. If prompted, enter an administrator password.
  4. To delete it permanently, empty the Trash.

If macOS says the app is in use, make sure it is closed. If you cannot remove it, Apple suggests restarting the Mac or trying Safe Mode. Finder cannot remove apps that macOS requires, including many built-in apps and items in the System folder. Apple’s uninstall instructions

Stop automatic opening and background work

Removing the app bundle is not the same as disabling its startup or background permissions. Review both settings separately:

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
  2. Under Open at Login, remove the app if it is listed.
  3. Review App Background Activity separately. Turn off the app’s permission if you no longer want it to perform work while it is not open.

Background activity may support expected functions such as checking for updates or syncing, so disabling it can affect how an app behaves. Apple explains these settings in Login Items & Extensions settings on Mac.

Check for helper activity if it persists

Some apps use helper executables or background tasks managed separately from the visible app. If you are comfortable with Terminal, Apple’s deployment documentation describes sfltool dumpbtm as an advanced way to print the status of login and background items. The command is for inspection; its output is not a list of files to delete. Do not remove unfamiliar items from system folders by guesswork. Consult the app developer if you cannot identify a helper. Verify after restarting or signing in

Restart the Mac or sign out and back in, then check whether the app still opens or performs the activity you wanted to stop. If it opens again, review Login Items and the app’s own settings or documentation. Other software can also cause an app or window to reopen; Apple describes that behavior in its guidance on preventing apps and windows from reopening.

If the problem is broader than one app—for example, you are diagnosing a startup issue—Apple recommends recording your existing login items, removing them, restarting, and adding them back one at a time to identify a problematic item. That is a troubleshooting method, not a required step for every uninstall. Apple’s login-item troubleshooting steps

What uninstalling does not remove

  • Your documents: Files you created with the app are separate from the app and are not automatically removed. Keep them if needed; some may require the app to open.
  • Your subscription: Deleting an app does not cancel a subscription purchased with it. Cancel it separately through the relevant subscription or account settings.
  • Every possible app-related file: There is no single manual cleanup procedure that applies to every app. Use the developer’s uninstaller rather than deleting random Library files.

Apple notes the distinction between app deletion, documents, and subscriptions in its Mac app removal instructions.
