If an AI assistant archived an email, look in the mail service’s Archive or All Mail folder and move it back to your inbox. If it deleted the email, look in Trash or Deleted Items and restore it before the provider’s retention window expires. For Gemini in Gmail, use Undo immediately after confirming the action: Google gives you 60 seconds, unless you submit another prompt first.
First identify what happened to the email
“Undo” can mean two different things: reversing an assistant’s action immediately, or restoring a message later from a mail folder. The right recovery route depends on whether the assistant archived or deleted the email, which email provider you use, and—in some services—which app version you have.

These are separate from deleting an AI assistant’s own chat. Chat history controls do not necessarily change the original email.
Gemini in Gmail: undo first, then recover from the right folder
Google says Gemini does not delete, archive, label, or mark messages read or unread until you explicitly confirm the action. After you confirm, Google provides 60 seconds to undo it. That opportunity ends if you submit another prompt or wait beyond the 60-second window. Google’s Gemini in Gmail instructions describe this immediate undo option.

If the 60-second Undo option is still available
- Select Undo as soon as it appears after the confirmed action.
- If you have already submitted another prompt or the 60 seconds have passed, use the recovery path below instead.
If Undo has expired
- Archived: In Gmail, search
in:archiveor open All Mail. Select the message and choose Move to Inbox. A reply to an archived thread also returns it to the inbox. - Deleted: Open Trash, select the message or messages, and move them to the inbox or another folder. Gmail says messages in Trash are automatically deleted after 30 days, so act before then.
Google documents these steps for Gmail; they should not be assumed to apply to every third-party email assistant or provider. See Google’s Gmail archive instructions for the archive and Trash distinction.
Recover archived or deleted messages in Outlook
Microsoft’s recovery steps differ by Outlook version and account. Its Outlook recovery guide covers Outlook on the web, new Outlook, classic Outlook, and Outlook.com. Choose the version you use before following its instructions.

Look in the likely folder first
- If the assistant archived the email, look in Archive and move it back to the inbox.
- If it deleted the email, check Deleted Items. Microsoft also advises checking Junk Email where appropriate.
Check Recoverable Items when available
In new Outlook and Outlook on the web, if the message is no longer in Deleted Items, select Deleted Items and choose Recover items deleted from this folder. If the message appears in Recoverable Items, select it and restore it. Availability depends on the Outlook version and account; Microsoft does not promise recovery after an item is permanently removed.
Recover messages in Yahoo Mail
Restore a message still in Trash
In New Yahoo Mail, select the message in Trash and choose Restore to Inbox. The Yahoo Mail Trash instructions cover this folder-based restore.

Request recovery for recently missing messages
If messages were deleted or went missing within the last seven days, Yahoo lets you submit a restore request. The request cannot be canceled and restoration is not guaranteed. Yahoo says restored messages may return to their earlier folder; Trash items return to Inbox, and messages from Sent, Archive, or custom folders also return to Inbox. Spam and Draft messages are not restored through this request. See Yahoo’s recovery instructions before submitting a request.

An AI conversation is not the same thing as an email message. If you mean a ChatGPT conversation that contains email-related work, OpenAI says an archived chat remains accessible in Archived chats and can be unarchived. A deleted ChatGPT conversation—including one removed with Delete all chats—cannot be restored. These controls affect ChatGPT conversation history, not the email folders in Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo Mail.

OpenAI also says deleting a chat does not itself delete original data from a connected app. Disconnecting an app prevents future access but does not remove past conversations that already used its data. See OpenAI’s instructions for deleting and archiving chats.

Before you restore multiple emails
- Check whether the assistant archived or deleted the messages; archived mail is not in Trash just because it vanished from the inbox.
- For a batch deletion, select the intended messages in Trash or Deleted Items and use the provider’s restore or move command. In Gmail, do this before the 30-day Trash retention period ends.
- For Gemini in Gmail, the 60-second Undo window applies to its just-confirmed action; it is different from restoring messages later from Trash or All Mail.
- For Outlook, follow the instructions for your exact client and account rather than assuming every version has the same recovery controls.
- For Yahoo’s seven-day restore request, treat recovery as uncertain, not guaranteed.
