The short version: a Tom’s Hardware benchmark result is not a universal speed rating. It is a measurement of one workload on one test platform, with a particular operating system, driver, benchmark or game version, resolution, image-quality setting and metric. Compare products only when those conditions match, then choose the metric that reflects what you actually do.
For CPUs, separate gaming, single-threaded, multi-threaded and application results. For GPUs, attach every FPS number to its resolution, quality mode and rendering features, and check frame-time consistency rather than average FPS alone. Synthetic scores are useful for a broad signal, but a real application or representative game run is stronger evidence for a specific purchase.
A benchmark is a measurement package, not a property of the chip
When two products are ranked on a chart, the ranking is meaningful inside that chart’s test package. The package includes the hardware platform, memory, cooling and power limits; the operating system and drivers; the benchmark, game or application version; the tested resolution and quality settings; and the reported metric. Change one of those variables and the order, gap or even the apparent winner can change.

If we conduct a test, you should be able to replicate that experience.” Its methodology uses software measurements, sensors and hands-on observation, while the decision to review a product is editorial rather than paid placement. Those statements describe a testing philosophy, not a promise that every chart applies to every computer.

| Part of the test package | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|
| Workload | A game, encoder, renderer, compiler and compression job exercise different hardware resources. |
| Test platform | Motherboard firmware, memory, cooling, power limits and the companion CPU or GPU can expose or hide product differences. |
| Software version | Game patches, benchmark revisions, operating-system updates and drivers can alter performance and compatibility. |
| Resolution and quality | Lower resolutions often expose CPU limits; higher resolutions and demanding effects often shift the limit to the GPU. |
| Metric | Average FPS, low-percentile FPS, frame time, score and completion time answer different questions. |
Therefore, do not combine a percentage from one review with a percentage from another unless the test conditions are demonstrably the same. A current ranking is a snapshot of a changing software and hardware environment, not a timeless specification.
How to read Tom’s Hardware CPU charts
The current 2026 CPU hierarchy runs more than 200 individual tests for each processor and condenses the results into gaming, single-threaded and multi-threaded views, alongside application and efficiency evidence. Each view answers a different question.
Gaming charts: a deliberately CPU-sensitive test
Tom’s Hardware’s current CPU gaming retest uses 1080p with a high-end discrete GPU, identified in the hierarchy as the GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition. The low resolution and fast graphics card reduce the chance that the GPU becomes the bottleneck, making differences in game engines, scheduling, cache behavior, memory latency and frame-time handling easier to see.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is useful for comparing processors in a high-refresh-rate gaming system, but it is not a prediction of FPS at every resolution. With the same graphics card at 1440p or 4K, the GPU may do more of the work and the CPU gap may shrink. If your own graphics card, settings or games differ, treat the chart as directional evidence rather than a guaranteed frame rate.
Single-threaded charts: lightly parallel work
Single-threaded results represent work that largely depends on one active thread at a time. They are relevant to tasks such as portions of office software, game logic, browser interactions and applications that cannot distribute a job efficiently across many cores. A processor leading this chart has an advantage in the tested lightly threaded operations; that does not establish an equal advantage in a fully parallel render or encode.
Multi-threaded charts: work spread across cores
Multi-threaded results measure workloads that can use many cores and threads concurrently. Rendering, compression, compiling and some encoding jobs can scale substantially, although scaling is never identical across programs. A processor with more cores or higher sustained power may lead here while offering a smaller gaming advantage, because games and interactive applications have different synchronization, latency and engine limits.
Application tests: the closest match to a specific job
The application suite includes examples such as 7-Zip compression, LAME audio encoding, Corona and LuxCoreRender rendering, Y-Cruncher and Cinebench 2024 and 2026. These are separate workloads, not interchangeable scores. If you render with Corona, its result deserves more weight than a generic single-threaded index; if you compress archives with 7-Zip, the 7-Zip result is the relevant evidence.

For application testing, Tom’s Hardware identifies a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition as the display-output GPU. Using a separate graphics card keeps graphics compute from becoming the variable in a CPU test. That arrangement makes the CPU comparison cleaner, but it does not mean your own GPU, driver or application plug-ins will behave identically.

Efficiency and power: performance has a system cost
CPU charts also include power and efficiency information. A faster result can require more sustained power, stronger cooling, a more capable motherboard or a larger power supply. Compare performance per watt and the platform requirements separately from the headline rank. A small performance lead may not justify a substantially hotter or more expensive system for a machine that runs workloads continuously.
How to interpret a CPU hierarchy position
- Identify the view. Confirm whether the rank is gaming, single-threaded, multi-threaded, application or efficiency.
- Find the workloads you use. Give priority to the games, encoders, renderers, compilers or compression tools that match your routine.
- Look at the spread. A narrow difference may be unnoticeable in use, while a large and repeatable application gap can matter for paid work.
- Check the platform. Include motherboard compatibility, memory support, cooling, firmware, power limits and upgrade options.
- Keep the test date attached. The 2026 suite is intended to evolve as new games and benchmarks arrive.
How to read Tom’s Hardware GPU charts
GPU reviews primarily answer how many frames a card can render in a defined game, resolution and quality mode, and how consistently it delivers those frames. A chart is meaningful only when those conditions remain attached to the number.
Average FPS: total throughput
Average frames per second is the mean output over the tested scene. Higher is generally better for responsiveness and the ability to drive a high-refresh display, but an average can conceal brief severe dips. Two cards can have similar averages while one feels less smooth because its slowest moments are worse.
1% low and 0.1% low FPS: the slow tail
One-percent-low and 0.1-percent-low figures expose the slower portion of frame delivery. Higher values usually indicate fewer pronounced dips and a steadier experience. They are not the same as a guaranteed minimum FPS, and their exact behavior depends on capture method and scene length, but they add information that an average omits.
Frame time: smoothness in milliseconds
Frame time is the interval between completed frames, measured in milliseconds. Lower and more consistent frame times are better. A sudden spike means the viewer waits longer for the next frame, which can feel like a hitch even when the average FPS remains high.
Render or completion time: finishing a job
For a workload measured by elapsed time, lower is better: the program completed the task sooner. Do not compare a completion-time chart with an FPS chart as though they were the same kind of score.
Synthetic scores: an index inside one program
A synthetic benchmark produces a program-specific index. It can provide a broad relative signal and is useful for tracking a system under consistent conditions, but it is not a direct promise of application speed. Intel’s guidance puts the limitation plainly: “Synthetic benchmarks are not an exact predictor of performance.” Use real-world tests when you know the application or game you care about.
How the 2026 GPU testing approach affects interpretation
Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 GPU plan selects roughly 60-second sequences containing representative shadows, reflections, geometry and terrain. Reviewers play enough to identify light, average and demanding scenes, then use representative sequences instead of relying only on a pathological worst case.

The GPU output is also evaluated by expert human eyes. The reviewer Jeffrey Kampman described this as more time- and labor-intensive than blindly transferring automated logs, but said it allows the output to be checked for smoothness, stutter, visual artifacts and responsiveness. A chart should therefore be read together with the review’s observations, not in isolation.
What each common metric tells you
| Metric | Better direction | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average FPS | Higher | Overall rendering throughput and high-refresh gaming | Can hide short stutters and severe dips |
| 1% low FPS | Higher | Detecting slower moments during a run | Not a guaranteed minimum; depends on capture conditions |
| 0.1% low FPS | Higher | Finding the most pronounced tail behavior | More sensitive to isolated events and test length |
| Frame time | Lower and steadier | Judging smoothness and hitching | Must be viewed as a time series or alongside low-percentile data |
| Render or completion time | Lower | How quickly an application finishes a defined job | Applies only to that workload and settings |
| Synthetic score | Usually higher, within that benchmark | Broad, repeatable relative comparisons | Not an exact predictor of a particular application |
Why a CPU can win at 1080p and lose at 1440p
At 1080p with a very fast GPU, the processor may be the limiting component. The CPU must prepare game logic, draw calls, simulation and asset work quickly enough to keep the GPU fed. Differences in those tasks are visible when the GPU has spare capacity.
At 1440p, the GPU renders substantially more pixels and may spend more time on shading, memory traffic, reflections and other effects. Once the GPU is the limiting component, two CPUs can produce nearly the same frame rate even if one led the 1080p CPU-sensitive test. At 4K, that effect is often stronger, though a poorly optimized game or unusually high-refresh target can still expose CPU limits.
Settings can change the balance as well. Ray tracing increases graphics work; reducing image quality or using upscaling can move the limit back toward the CPU. Frame generation changes the displayed-frame count without making the CPU produce every displayed frame in the same way, so its results must be compared only with the same feature state.
The correct interpretation is not that one chart is wrong. The charts answer different bottleneck questions. Use the resolution, quality mode, ray-tracing state, upscaling mode and frame-generation state that match your planned system.
Synthetic benchmarks versus games and real applications
Synthetic tests are controlled, repeatable and convenient for detecting broad architectural differences. They are valuable when comparing many products under one consistent procedure, especially when the benchmark resembles your task.
Real applications and representative game runs are stronger evidence for a specific use because they measure the completion time or frame delivery produced by that software under matching settings. Programs use instruction sets, memory patterns, APIs, plug-ins and scheduling behavior differently. A processor that excels in one synthetic index can be ordinary in your encoder; a GPU that leads a rasterized game can lose ground when ray tracing is enabled.

A repeatable way to compare two products
- Name the workload. Write down the particular game, video encoder, renderer, compiler, compression job or general desktop activity that matters.
- Choose the matching chart. Use gaming, single-threaded, multi-threaded, application or efficiency data for CPUs; use the relevant game or GPU workload for graphics cards.
- Match the test context. Check resolution, image-quality preset, ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, driver, operating system and benchmark or game version.
- Stay inside one test platform. Compare products in the same chart and review whenever possible. Do not merge percentages from unrelated reviews with different platforms.
- Read throughput and consistency together. For gaming, pair average FPS with 1% lows, 0.1% lows or frame-time behavior. For productivity, pair completion time with power and sustained behavior.
- Check practical constraints. Verify socket or platform compatibility, memory requirements, cooling, power supply capacity, case clearance, software support and feature availability.
- Price the whole system. Include the processor or card, motherboard, memory changes, cooler, power supply and any required upgrade. A faster chart result can carry a larger total cost.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating a chart rank as universal
Mistake: assuming the first-place product is fastest in every program and game.
Fix: identify the chart category and select results that match your workload. A multi-threaded leader is not automatically the best gaming CPU.
Quoting FPS without its conditions
Mistake: repeating “this card gets 120 FPS” without saying the game, resolution, quality preset or rendering features.
Fix: retain the complete test description. An FPS value without that context is incomplete.
Using average FPS alone
Mistake: choosing the card with the highest average despite poor lows or visible hitching.
Fix: inspect low-percentile FPS and frame-time behavior, then read the reviewer’s visual observations.
Comparing unlike reviews
Mistake: combining results made with different drivers, memory, BIOS settings, game patches or companion hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Assuming synthetic gains transfer directly
Mistake: converting a benchmark-score advantage into an expected application-time advantage.
Fix: give priority to the real program, game or workflow you use and treat synthetic results as supporting evidence.
Ignoring efficiency and platform cost
Mistake: selecting a faster component without checking cooling, power, motherboard support or upgrade expense.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: evaluate performance, efficiency and total platform cost as separate decision axes.
How to preserve the meaning of an older chart
Record the review date and configuration when saving or quoting a result. Tom’s Hardware’s CPU retest says its suite will evolve as new benchmarks and games arrive, and its GPU plan documents a particular 2026 bench rather than a permanent standard. A driver update, game patch or replacement test sequence can change later rankings without either review being incorrect.
When revisiting an older chart, ask whether the game version, driver, operating system, benchmark revision and tested features still resemble your system. If not, use the chart to understand historical behavior, not as a precise forecast of current performance.
A decision checklist for readers
- What exact software or game am I trying to accelerate?
- Am I reading the correct CPU category or GPU workload?
- Do the resolution, quality settings, ray tracing, upscaling and frame generation match my target?
- Are the products on the same test platform with the same software versions?
- Have I checked average performance and consistency metrics where smoothness matters?
- Have I looked at real application results rather than relying on one synthetic score?
- Will cooling, power, motherboard, memory and case constraints change the result in my system?
- Does the performance difference justify the complete platform cost?
- Is the chart current enough for the drivers and software I will run?
Used this way, Tom’s Hardware charts become decision evidence: a controlled answer to a defined workload under stated conditions. They are most useful when you preserve that definition instead of reducing the result to a single universal number.
