To unblock a website, first work out what is stopping it: a captive-portal sign-in, a browser or certificate problem, a network or DNS failure, an account-security check, or a school/work restriction. Check whether other sites and devices work, note the exact error, then use the matching fix. If an administrator intentionally blocks the site, request an approved exception rather than bypassing managed controls.
Start by identifying what is blocked
Before changing settings, open a few unrelated websites and record the full error message on the affected site. If possible, check whether another device on the same Wi-Fi can browse. The pattern helps distinguish a single-site issue from a device or network problem. Chrome’s error-message guide explains, for example, that ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED means the hostname does not exist or has a different IP address, while disconnected, timeout, reset, and refused-connection errors point to other failure types: Google Chrome Help.
- No sites load on one device: check that device’s Wi-Fi or internet connection.
- No sites load on multiple devices on the same network: investigate the network, router, or required sign-in.
- Only one site fails: check browser state, extensions, VPN or Private Relay, site availability, and whether the failure follows you to another network.
- A school or workplace device displays a policy block: the restriction may be administrator-managed; ask IT or the network administrator for review.
Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide is a useful starting point when browsing fails across sites.
Try these fixes in order
1. Complete a captive-portal sign-in
Hotels, airports, schools, workplaces, and public Wi-Fi networks may require you to sign in or accept terms before ordinary browsing is available. Open a website to prompt the sign-in page, confirm that you joined the network’s official Wi-Fi name, and complete the portal steps. If the page does not appear, ask the network administrator whether access is pending approval or sign-in.

A VPN or proxy can prevent the portal from loading because the network may require sign-in before that connection is established, as Mozilla Support explains. If permitted, disconnect the VPN or proxy temporarily, complete portal sign-in, and reconnect only if needed and allowed.
2. Check a single-site failure in another browser or network
If other sites work, open the affected site in a different browser. If appropriate, try another network, such as mobile data. If it works elsewhere, the problem may be specific to the original browser, device, or network. Disable browser extensions temporarily, check whether cookies or stale site data are involved, and test with your VPN or Apple Private Relay disconnected if you use either. Apple lists VPN and Private Relay among possible reasons a site may fail to load in Safari: Apple Support.
If the same site fails across browsers and networks, the issue may be at the site itself. Google advises contacting the site owner for errors that indicate a website-side problem: Chrome Help.

3. Treat security warnings as warnings, not blocks to evade
A certificate warning, invalid-name error, or obsolete-security warning may indicate a certificate or server-configuration problem. Do not ignore the warning, disable browser security, or enter passwords or payment details on the page. Check that the device date and time are correct; if the warning persists, contact the site owner or wait for them to correct the configuration. Chrome documents several server-side errors and recommends contacting the site owner in applicable cases: Chrome Help.

4. Resolve an account-security challenge
If the site loads but a Microsoft sign-in flow challenges or blocks you, use Microsoft’s account-specific troubleshooting: leave private browsing, temporarily disable blockers, ensure cookies and JavaScript are enabled, disconnect a VPN or proxy, switch networks, or try another browser. Microsoft notes that shared networks can have an IP address flagged for unusual traffic. These steps apply to that sign-in challenge, not every blocked website: Microsoft Support.
5. Ask an administrator about managed restrictions
Schools and employers can configure website allowlists and blocklists on managed Chrome browsers and ChromeOS devices. Google’s enterprise documentation says the allowlist takes precedence over the blocklist: Chrome Enterprise and Education Help. If you need a site for a legitimate task, ask the administrator to review or allow it. Do not alter management settings or use an unapproved workaround.

Some organizations also require a proxy and provide the server address or configuration script. Microsoft advises users to obtain those details from their organization: Microsoft’s Windows proxy guide.
When VPNs, proxies, or DNS changes make sense
A VPN or proxy is not a universal website-unblocking tool. It may be appropriate for a permitted privacy or network-access need, but it can interfere with captive portals, trigger a site’s account-security checks, or be disallowed by the destination service or network. Before using one, check network rules and the site’s terms, and review the provider’s privacy and data-handling terms, supported devices, and performance. The available guidance does not establish a best VPN or a universal recommendation.

It cannot fix a website outage, an account restriction, a certificate problem, or an administrator policy. Avoid changing DNS or resetting network settings as a first response; on managed equipment, ask IT first. Microsoft warns that a Windows network reset may require VPN software or virtual switches to be reinstalled or configured again: Microsoft network troubleshooting. Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not assume a connection error means an administrator intentionally blocked the site; use the error and scope of the failure to diagnose first.
- Do not bypass certificate warnings or weaken browser security to force a page open.
- Do not reset DNS, network settings, or managed-device controls without a reason and, where applicable, administrator approval.
- Do not treat a VPN as a guaranteed fix; it can cause the very portal or account problem you are troubleshooting.

Can changing DNS unblock any website?
No. DNS changes may help only with some hostname-resolution failures; they do not resolve outages, certificate errors, account challenges, or administrator restrictions.
Is it safe to ignore a certificate warning to open a site?
No. A certificate warning can indicate a security or configuration problem. Do not enter sensitive information or disable browser protections to get past it.
