What does x̄ mean?
X-bar is a lowercase or uppercase x with a line above it. In statistics, X-bar commonly denotes a mean; the Wisconsin Department of Administration’s Human Resources Handbook, Chapter 202, Attachment 1 defines Xbar as an X with a line over it and identifies it as the mean.

Type x-bar as a formatted equation in Word
- Click where the equation should appear in Word for Windows.
- Press Alt+= to insert an equation box. Microsoft Support says, “In Word, PowerPoint, and OneNote for Windows, press Alt+= to insert a new equation at the cursor.”
- Enter the overbar construction using the equation input format supported by your Word version. Microsoft documents linear equation input in UnicodeMath and LaTeX; see its linear-format equation guidance for syntax and version details.
- Convert the linear input to the formatted equation if Word does not render it automatically, then check that the line is positioned over x.
The equation route is usually the better choice when x-bar is part of a larger formula: it keeps the notation in Word’s equation system rather than relying on inline character spacing.
Enter x-bar as inline text
In plain text, x̄ is commonly encoded as two Unicode characters: lowercase x (U+0078), followed by U+0304 COMBINING MACRON. The combining macron attaches to the preceding letter; it is not the same as a standalone spacing macron.

- Type 0078 and press Alt+X to convert that code to x, if you want to use Word’s hexadecimal conversion method.
- Type 0304 immediately after x, then select only 0304.
- Press Alt+X to convert the selected code to the combining macron.
- Check the result in the sentence and in any exported or shared version of the document.
Microsoft documents entering a hexadecimal character code and pressing Alt+X to convert it. When a code follows other text, select just the code before conversion so Word does not include the preceding characters. Combining marks can behave differently depending on insertion context, font, and the application used to display the document; if the mark looks detached or missing, use an equation instead.
Save a shortcut if you type it often
For repeated use, you can create an AutoCorrect entry that expands a short trigger into x-bar or an equation construction. The exact menu names and behavior can vary by Word version. In a 2011 Microsoft Q&A response, Microsoft MVP and volunteer moderator Suzanne S. Barnhill noted that saving the character as an AutoCorrect entry could be useful, while describing the equation-editor demonstration as usually overkill. Treat that as historical advice, not a guide to current menu labels; see the Microsoft Q&A discussion.

Fix common display problems
- The bar is over the wrong character: Confirm the combining macron directly follows x, or re-enter it inside an equation.
- The bar appears as a separate mark: The font or application may not position the combining mark correctly. Use Word’s equation editor for reliable mathematical layout.
- Alt+X converts too much: Select only the hexadecimal code before pressing Alt+X when the code follows other text.
- The symbol changes on another device: A different application or font may render the combining sequence differently. Check the recipient’s document or use a formatted equation when consistent math layout matters.
