To turn a YouTube clip into a TikTok, use footage you own or have permission to reuse, edit it for TikTok, then upload the finished file in TikTok Studio. YouTube’s remix tools and its feature for making Shorts from your own videos do not, by themselves, give you permission to export footage or music to TikTok.
Choose the right source route
Start by checking who controls the video and its audio. A public YouTube video is not automatically free to repost elsewhere, and giving credit does not replace permission.

YouTube offers remix options such as Cut, Green Screen, Collab, and sound remixing for eligible content. Whether they appear can depend on privacy settings, creator controls, rights-holder claims, and music licensing. Those are YouTube Shorts tools, not proof that a remix is cleared for TikTok. Make a TikTok edit from a YouTube clip
- Confirm your rights. If it is your video, check that you also control or have cleared any music, images, or other protected material included in it. For someone else’s video, get permission for the specific cross-platform use and check audio rights before editing or posting.
- Get an authorized source file. For your own footage, work from the original file you control where possible. YouTube Studio documents making Shorts from your own long-form videos; follow its current Clips and Shorts options if you want to create a YouTube Short first. YouTube Help
- Choose the moment and trim it. Keep the part that communicates one clear point. Remove pauses and setup that a viewer needs only in the longer video. A short clip should still make sense without relying on information that appeared earlier.
- Compose for a phone screen. A vertical-friendly crop is a practical choice for TikTok, not a mandatory aspect ratio established by TikTok’s cited web-upload guidance. Keep the main subject and any essential on-screen text visible after cropping. Add captions or brief context where they improve understanding.
- Export a supported file. TikTok Studio’s web-upload guidance lists MP4 or WebM, a resolution of 720×1280 or higher, a duration of up to 30 minutes, and a file size below 10 GB. These are the limits in that guidance; TikTok notes that tools and availability can vary by region and experience. TikTok Support
- Upload in TikTok Studio. Open TikTok Studio on the web and choose Upload. Select the file, then review the caption, cover, audience setting, and available interaction options before posting. The page also describes an optional copyright check for sounds. Check the finished post and selected settings before you publish. TikTok Support
Check copyright and music before posting
Rights do not automatically travel with a clip between platforms. YouTube warns that protected material used in externally created Shorts without approval can lead to a Content ID claim or a copyright removal request. Music available through one platform’s tools may not be licensed for a separate TikTok upload. Confirm that your permission covers the destination platform and the audio in the exported file. YouTube’s computer upload guidance says Shorts can be up to three minutes and square or vertical. That is a YouTube Shorts limit, not TikTok’s specification. TikTok’s cited web guidance gives its own upload limits, but does not establish one required aspect ratio. YouTube Help TikTok Support
Fix common problems
- You cannot find a YouTube remix option: The video may be ineligible because of privacy settings, creator limits, rights claims, or music licensing. Use footage you own or obtain permission for a separate edit rather than trying to bypass the restriction. YouTube Help
- TikTok Studio will not accept the upload: Check that the file is MP4 or WebM, at least 720×1280, no longer than 30 minutes, and below 10 GB. If the file meets those listed limits, feature availability may still differ by region or web experience. TikTok Support
- The clip looks awkward after cropping: Reframe the edit so the subject and necessary text remain visible on a phone screen. Vertical framing is a practical presentation choice, not a documented universal upload requirement.
- You are unsure about a song: Do not assume that permission to use the video covers its music, or that a song available in YouTube tools is cleared for TikTok. Check the rights for the TikTok use or replace the audio with material you are authorized to use.
