To turn a WordPress site into a social network, install the free BuddyPress plugin, enable the community features you need, configure its pages and settings, then test the result with your active theme. BuddyPress adds member profiles, groups, connections, private messages, activity streams and notifications; you control which components are active.

What BuddyPress adds to a WordPress site

BuddyPress is a community-maintained plugin for adding social features to an existing WordPress site. Its components include member registration and profiles, connections, private messages, groups, activity streams, notifications, editable profile fields and user settings. Depending on the enabled components, members can post to activity streams, comment in threads, favorite activity and use mentions. Groups can be public, private or hidden. See the BuddyPress plugin listing for its current feature description.

These features provide the building blocks of a small social network, but do not automatically make every part of a site private or determine who should be allowed to join. Choose components and configure the site according to the community you intend to run.

Check your WordPress environment

The current WordPress.org BuddyPress listing recommends PHP 7.4 or later, MySQL 5.7 or later or MariaDB 10.4 or later, and HTTPS support. Treat these as the current hosting guidance rather than relying on the older minimums on the BuddyPress requirements page, which conflict with the newer listing. The listing also warns that legacy software versions that have reached end of life can expose a site to security vulnerabilities.

Install and configure BuddyPress

  1. Install the plugin: In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New, search for BuddyPress, then install and activate it.
  2. Select community features: Go to Settings → BuddyPress → Components. Enable the features your community will use; you can adjust the component selection later.
  3. Set up directories and special pages: Go to Settings → BuddyPress → Pages and configure the pages BuddyPress uses. The plugin creates some pages, but its listing recommends customizing the flow and wording to suit your site.
  4. Review the settings: Open Settings → BuddyPress → Settings and review the available options for the components you enabled.
  5. Test the site: Visit member profiles, group pages and activity pages using your live theme. Check both logged-in and logged-out views, and adjust styling where necessary.

Check how BuddyPress fits your theme

BuddyPress uses a theme compatibility API, and WordPress.org says it works out of the box with nearly every theme. That does not guarantee a finished visual match: member directories, profiles, groups and feeds may need styling adjustments. Test the actual theme and plugin combination before treating the community area as ready for members.

Choose the right setup for a multisite network

If your WordPress installation is a multisite network, decide whether the community belongs to one site or spans the network before configuring BuddyPress. The BuddyPress Codex multisite guide explains that when BuddyPress is activated on only one network site, posts, comments and activity from other sites are not recorded in that site’s Activity Streams. The guide is dated, so treat its version-specific network instructions cautiously.

A more specialized multi-network configuration is described by the Codex as complicated and requiring WordPress/BuddyPress expertise plus server-administration skills. It is an advanced deployment, not a routine step for a single-site community.

Decide whether you need forums or a paid platform

Option Best fit What to weigh
BuddyPress A site owner wants a free, modular community plugin and can configure its components and presentation. Feature coverage, theme styling, extension needs, hosting compatibility, multisite scope and ongoing maintenance. BuddyPress listing
BuddyPress with bbPress A community needs forum discussions connected to groups and member profiles. Whether group forums and topic/reply activity suit the discussion needs, plus any extra setup or design work. BuddyPress documents bbPress integration and group forums in its plugin listing.
BuddyBoss Platform and Theme A site owner prefers a commercial bundle and a more packaged community experience. Compare the current feature bundle, renewals and total cost, needed integrations, support, and whether the bundle replaces enough separate extensions to justify its price. Check the vendor’s platform information and plans and pricing directly; product packaging and prices can change.

BuddyBoss describes features including profiles, groups, activity feeds and notifications. Its vendor material identifies LearnDash as a separately sold learning-management system for e-learning features; it is relevant if you are building a course community, not a requirement for a basic social network.
