Yes—you can turn your kid’s drawing into a 3D-printed figure. The process is to capture the artwork, create and review a 3D model, make delicate features sturdy enough to print, then print it yourself or commission a service. The key decision is how the figure will be used: a keepsake or display piece is different from a toy intended for regular play, and a custom print should not be assumed to be safety-certified.
What do you need to make a toy from your kid’s drawing?
You need a clear image of the drawing, a 3D model based on it, and either a 3D printer or a service that can print the model. The drawing is flat, so the model also needs decisions about its unseen sides, thickness, and how delicate details connect to the body.
- Artwork capture: A straight-on scan or photo taken in even light. Decide the finished size and which details must remain recognizable.
- 3D modeling: A modeler or AI tool can turn the image or description into a rotatable concept. Front, side, and back drawings help communicate the intended shape.

- Printing route: Print at home if you have suitable equipment and can prepare the model, or use a commissioned service to handle modeling and production.
How do you turn the drawing into a 3D print?
1. Capture the drawing and define the goal
Scan the artwork or photograph it straight on in even light. Note the figure’s desired finished size and the features that should not change. If you can, add side and back views: without them, whoever builds the model must interpret surfaces the original drawing does not show.
2. Create a rotatable 3D concept
Give the image to a modeler or a drawing-to-3D service, or describe the character with the image. Inspect the result from the front, sides, and back. Ask for revisions if the proportions, expression, or distinctive details no longer match the child’s idea. A convincing front view alone is not enough to judge a three-dimensional figure.

3. Adapt fragile details for printing
Review thin or projecting features before printing. Thickening a tail or ear, blending a whisker into the body, or rounding a point can make a figure less prone to snapping while preserving its character. This is a design trade-off: tiny details may need to be simplified to survive handling.
4. Choose home printing or a service
For a home image-relief workflow, 3D Lithophane’s guide lists an FDM printer, a standard 0.4 mm nozzle, and white PLA. Its tool converts image brightness into model height and exports STL, 3MF, or OBJ files. This is an image-relief workflow, not a complete recipe for every sculpted character; a figure model still needs to be prepared for the printer and material being used.

If you do not have a printer or do not want to prepare the model, a commissioned service can take on some or all of the modeling, printing, finishing, and shipping. Check what the service includes before ordering, especially whether you receive a preview and can request changes.
5. Inspect the finished figure
Look for fragile parts, sharp tips, or pieces that have come loose. Consider whether the result is suitable for display, supervised play, or regular handling. A print that looks right may still need sturdier details if it is going to be handled often.

Should you print it yourself or commission a custom figure?
DIY gives you more control over the files and iterations, but it requires modeling or model-preparation work and printer setup. A commissioned service reduces that technical work; some services show a digital preview before printing or payment. Compare the actual preview and revision process, material and finish, durability of thin features, lead time, price, shipping, and intended use—not just the initial image.

Is a custom 3D-printed figure safe for a child to play with?
Do not treat a commissioned figure as a certified children’s toy unless the maker supplies documentation establishing that. FacFox cautions that a custom print should not automatically be treated as a certified children’s toy. Thin or pointed details can break, and small detachable parts need particular attention. My Studio Art describes its standard PLA figures as keepsakes or display objects and notes supervision for children under three when small parts or thin features are present; OnlyKids recommends display or supervised play for younger children.

Before handing the figure over, inspect its points, joins, and small parts, and think about the child’s age and how they play. If you want an object for regular play, ask the maker directly about the design’s intended use and any relevant safety documentation rather than assuming that a custom print meets toy-safety requirements.
