Change vibration from the controller’s Configure page. On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, open Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories, select your controller, choose Configure, and switch Vibration on or off. On Windows, use the Xbox Accessories app, select the controller, open Configure, and change the vibration setting.
Which setting controls Xbox controller vibration?
The controller-level Vibration switch determines whether the Xbox controller responds with rumble when a game sends vibration commands. It is separate from a game’s own rumble or haptic option. A controller can be configured to allow vibration while a particular game disables it, or a game can offer additional vibration controls that affect what you feel.
Microsoft’s Windows controller customization guidance includes assigning buttons, swapping triggers, and disabling vibration. The same type of controller profile is edited from the Configure page on an Xbox console or in Xbox Accessories on Windows.
Turn vibration on or off on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
Before you start
- Turn on the Xbox console.
- Connect the controller you want to configure and make sure it is the controller currently being used.
- If more than one controller is connected, check the controller identity shown on the Accessories screen before changing its profile.
Exact console steps
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Choose Profile & system.
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices & connections, then open Accessories.
- Select the controller whose vibration you want to change.
- Choose Configure.
- Set Vibration to on or off.
- Leave the configuration screen. The profile change is retained when you exit.
The menu path is the same for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. If the controller does not appear, reconnect it, sign in with the intended profile, and return to Devices & connections > Accessories.

Turn vibration back on
Follow the same path and set Vibration to on. If the controller still remains silent in a game, use the game’s controller, gameplay, rumble, or haptic settings as described below; the console switch only permits vibration at the controller-profile level.
Turn vibration on or off in Windows
What you need
- A compatible Xbox controller connected to the Windows PC.
- The Xbox Accessories app installed from Microsoft Store and updated enough to recognize the controller.
- For the fullest configuration controls, a USB connection may be necessary. Bluetooth can connect the controller for play while exposing fewer profile controls in the app.
Exact Windows steps
- Install or launch Xbox Accessories. On Windows 11, download and launch the app from Microsoft Store if it is not already installed.
- Connect the Xbox controller. If it is connected by Bluetooth but the configuration controls are missing or limited, connect it with a USB cable instead.
- Select the controller shown in Xbox Accessories.
- Select Configure.
- Change the vibration option, including the Turn on Vibration control when that label is displayed.
- Save the profile or exit the configuration page so the change is applied.
To restore rumble, return to the same Configure page and enable vibration. To stop rumble, disable it there. The setting is associated with the controller profile presented by the app, so verify that you selected the intended controller when several are connected.

Why the controller still does not vibrate
The game has disabled rumble
First confirm that the controller’s Vibration option is on. Then open the individual game’s settings and look for Rumble, Controller vibration, Haptic feedback, or a similarly named option. A game-level setting can override or supplement the controller-level permission, so enabling the console or Windows switch alone does not guarantee vibration in every title.

Reconnect the controller with a USB cable, close and reopen Xbox Accessories, and select the controller again. Bluetooth may provide normal gameplay input while exposing fewer customization controls. If USB does not add the expected options, the available controls can still vary with controller model, firmware, and the installed app version.

The wrong controller profile was edited
When multiple controllers are connected, select the specific controller displayed in Accessories or on the console’s Accessories page. Change the setting, exit Configure, and test that same controller in a game.
Vibration works in one game but not another
This pattern usually points to the individual game’s settings rather than a failed controller-level change. Compare the game’s rumble setting with a title known to provide vibration. If vibration works elsewhere, leave the controller switch enabled and adjust the affected game’s option.

You expected a strength slider
The documented controls establish a universal on/off vibration option, but they do not establish one vibration-intensity slider for every Xbox controller model. Do not assume that vibration strength can be adjusted globally. If the connected controller’s Configure page displays an intensity control, use that model-specific option; otherwise, only the on/off control is established.

How to check whether the change was applied
- Return to the same Configure page and verify that Vibration shows the intended state.
- Exit Configure so the profile is saved or retained.
- Start a game that normally produces a vibration event, such as a menu confirmation or in-game impact.
- If there is no response, inspect that game’s rumble or haptic setting before changing the controller profile again.
- On Windows, test over USB if the app did not initially expose the complete configuration page.
