To turn a Windows feature on or off, open Start, search for Turn Windows features on or off, and open the matching Control Panel task. Select a feature’s checkbox to enable it or clear the checkbox to disable it, select OK, and let Windows apply the change. Restart your PC if Windows asks you to.

Open the Windows Features dialog

  1. Open Start and type Turn Windows features on or off. You can also search for Windows features.
  2. Select the matching Control Panel task. The Windows Features dialog opens.

The same search route is documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11, though Windows interface details can vary by version.

Enable or disable a feature

  1. Find the component you want in the list.
  2. Select its checkbox to turn it on, or clear the checkbox to turn it off. If a checkbox appears partially selected, Windows may have only some subcomponents enabled.
  3. Select OK and wait while Windows applies the change.
  4. Restart the PC if Windows prompts you to do so.

For example, Microsoft’s instructions for enabling virtualization on Windows 10 and Windows 11 use this dialog: select Virtual Machine Platform, select OK, and restart if required. Microsoft notes, “You might need to restart your PC.”

If a feature is missing from the list

The list is not identical on every PC. Availability can depend on the Windows version, edition, or system image, and a work or school organization may manage which components are available. Check those factors before assuming that a missing item can be enabled with a checkbox.

Some capabilities are installed elsewhere. For example, Microsoft distributes the Media Feature Pack as an Optional Feature for Windows 10 N and Windows 11 N. Its installation route depends on the Windows version, and Microsoft requires a restart to complete installation even if Windows does not prompt for one. That restart requirement applies to the Media Feature Pack, not to every Windows feature.

Windows Features versus Settings’ Optional features

Turn Windows features on or off opens the classic dialog for managing Windows components. Settings also has a separate area called Optional features, which is used for certain separately installable capabilities. If a component is not in the classic dialog, look up its specific Microsoft installation instructions rather than assuming the two controls contain the same items.

These controls are also different from privacy settings and startup-app controls: those manage other parts of Windows, not the operating-system components listed in Windows Features.

Use PowerShell for administration

Administrators can use the documented PowerShell cmdlets Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature and Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature to enable or disable specific optional features. The feature name must match the component and Windows image being managed, so there is no single feature name that applies to every system. Use the relevant feature’s Microsoft documentation and confirm the target system before running an administrative change.
