You can turn a Twitch clip into a YouTube Short by making a portrait version in Twitch’s Clip Creator, then sharing it directly to YouTube Shorts if Twitch offers that option—or downloading the clip and uploading it yourself. Twitch clips are limited to 60 seconds; YouTube’s separate Shorts limit is up to three minutes for qualifying square or vertical videos.

Choose the right way to publish your clip

Route Best when What to know
Twitch direct share The clip is eligible and Twitch shows YouTube Shorts in its sharing controls. Quickest path. Twitch may prefill recommended title and description text, which you can edit. Availability depends on clip, channel settings, and account context. Twitch’s clip instructions.
Download, then upload You want to control the exported file and YouTube upload details. Create and save the portrait layout in Twitch first, then download it from Clips Manager and upload through YouTube Studio or the YouTube app. Twitch’s clip instructions; YouTube Shorts upload tips.
Make a Short from a YouTube video Your stream recording is already on YouTube. YouTube Studio’s Clips and Shorts workflow uses a segment of an existing YouTube video; it is not an import of a Twitch clip file. YouTube’s instructions for creating Shorts from your videos.

No source establishes that one route gets more views. Choose based on availability, framing control, and where the source video lives.

Make and export a portrait Twitch clip

  1. Open Clip Creator. From a live stream or past broadcast, open Twitch’s Clip Creator and select the moment you want. A Twitch-created clip can be up to 60 seconds long.
  2. Choose portrait framing. Select a portrait 9:16 layout. Twitch may suggest a crop intended to keep gameplay and camera in view; inspect it rather than assuming it is correct. Choose stacked or full layout and adjust the crop as needed. Preview the result, then apply and save it. Twitch also supports landscape 16:9 layouts.
  3. Title and publish the clip. Add a title and publish. Wait for the portrait version to finish rendering before trying to download it.
  4. Find it in Clips Manager. Open the clip’s sharing controls. If YouTube Shorts appears, you can use Twitch’s direct-share route. Otherwise, download the portrait version from Clips Manager. If the portrait download is missing, Twitch says that version has not yet been created: return to the editor, set and save the portrait layout, and wait for it to render. See Twitch’s clip instructions.

Share directly from Twitch

  1. In Clips Manager, open the clip’s sharing controls and select YouTube Shorts if that option is shown.
  2. Review the suggested title and description. Replace them if needed so they accurately describe the moment.
  3. Complete any YouTube upload details Twitch presents, including privacy and audience settings, then publish.

The direct-share option is not guaranteed for every clip or account. Channel owners may have sharing options viewers do not, and sharing another creator’s clip depends on that streamer’s settings. If the option is absent, use download-and-upload instead.

Download the clip and upload it to YouTube

On a computer with YouTube Studio

  1. Download the saved portrait clip from Twitch Clips Manager.
  2. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Upload videos and choose the file.
  3. Complete the video details, including title, privacy, and audience settings, then publish.

In the YouTube app

  1. Start an upload and select the square or vertical clip from your device.
  2. Use the editor to trim the video if needed; YouTube’s mobile guidance says videos up to three minutes can be trimmed there.
  3. Enter the title, privacy, and audience settings, review the preview, and publish.

YouTube classifies qualifying square or vertical uploads up to three minutes as Shorts. This YouTube limit does not lengthen a Twitch-created clip: Twitch’s Clip Creator still makes clips up to 60 seconds. The three-minute allowance is relevant when your source is a longer file edited elsewhere. For current upload details, see YouTube Shorts upload tips.

Make a Short from a stream already on YouTube

If your broadcast recording is already a YouTube video, you may be able to create a Short segment in YouTube Studio instead of exporting a Twitch clip:

  1. Select the source video in YouTube Studio and choose Clips and Shorts.
  2. Choose a transcript segment, set timestamps, or use an available AI suggestion.
  3. Preview the segment, create a draft, and complete the upload details.

In eligible circumstances, YouTube automatically links the source video as a related video. The available choices can vary by source video. This Studio workflow uses the YouTube upload already on your channel; it does not import a Twitch clip file. See YouTube’s instructions for creating Shorts from your videos.

Check video and audio rights before publishing

A clip being available to download from Twitch does not mean every element in it is cleared for YouTube. Confirm that you have the rights to share the gameplay, video, music, and other audio. Twitch prohibits sharing copyrighted material you do not own or have permission to use; examples include another artist’s songs and background music. YouTube warns that externally created Shorts using copyright-protected material may receive a Content ID claim, and a valid takedown can remove the Short and lead to a copyright strike. Review Twitch’s clip guidance and YouTube’s upload guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems

• YouTube Shorts is missing from Twitch sharing options: The direct-share control depends on account, clip, and channel settings. Download the saved portrait clip and upload it in YouTube Studio or the app.
  • No portrait download appears: The portrait version may not have been created yet. Set a portrait layout in Clip Creator, apply and save it, then wait for rendering before checking Clips Manager again.
  • The crop cuts off the game or camera: Twitch’s framing is a suggestion, not a guarantee. Return to the editor, adjust the crop or choose stacked/full layout, preview, and save.
  • The upload is not treated as a Short: Check that the video is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes. A Twitch-created clip itself cannot exceed Twitch’s 60-second clip limit.
  • You receive a copyright claim or takedown: Review the rights to every audio and video element, especially music. Remove or replace material you are not authorized to use; exporting from Twitch does not clear rights for YouTube.

It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
