You can stream a prerecorded podcast on YouTube Live without a camera: use an encoder such as OBS to send the podcast audio together with a still image as the video. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio, connect the encoder with the stream URL and key, check the preview, then start the broadcast. You need prepared media and an eligible YouTube channel—not a live microphone, camera, mixer, or hardware encoder.
Before you start: check eligibility and prepare your files
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its current Help page also sets 16 as the minimum age to livestream. Check your channel’s eligibility and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service before scheduling a broadcast: YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
- Podcast audio: Use an audio file supported by your chosen encoder. The exact supported formats depend on the software; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not prescribe one file format for this workflow.
- Still image: Prepare an image you have permission to use, including any artwork, logos, or photographs it contains.
- Encoder: OBS is one software option. Its official knowledge base documents media and audio sources; control names and playback options can vary by software version. See OBS Knowledge Base.
- Stable upload connection: The encoder sends video as well as audio, even when the picture is static. Choose settings your connection can sustain.
For a prepared audio file and one image, software encoding is the straightforward fit. A dedicated hardware encoder is not necessary unless your production needs justify additional equipment or inputs.
Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open the Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab. Create a new stream or select one you have scheduled.
- Set visibility to Public, Private, or Unlisted, depending on whether this is a public broadcast or a test. Check the selected stream’s details before proceeding.
- Locate the stream URL and stream key in the Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream.
YouTube’s Live Control Room guide explains the setup flow and stream controls: Set up a live stream with an encoder.

Add the podcast and still image in OBS
- Open OBS and select the scene you will use for the broadcast. Add an Image source and choose your still image. Resize or position it so it fills the canvas as intended.
- Add a Media Source and select the podcast audio file. Confirm that the source is not muted and that its playback behavior is appropriate for the planned show. Do not assume that every encoder repeats a file automatically.
- Play the source and watch OBS’s audio meter. Listen to the output and check that the image remains visible. If you want a continuous loop, confirm the media source’s restart or loop behavior in the version of the encoder you are using.
OBS documents its sources and audio configuration in the OBS Knowledge Base. The exact interface and playback controls may differ between software versions.
Connect OBS to YouTube and choose stream settings
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. If YouTube is available as a service preset, select it and follow the connection options shown. Otherwise, enter the stream URL and key from the Live Control Room in the encoder’s streaming settings.
- Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. Never reveal the stream key in a screen share or broadcast.
- Set the audio and video output. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 over RTMP/RTMPS, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps audio. Use an encoder video resolution and bitrate that your upload connection can reliably sustain.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee against interruptions.
YouTube’s published encoder settings include these H.264 examples: 720p at 30 fps, with 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended; and 480p at 30 fps, with 0.4 Mbps minimum and 4 Mbps recommended. The recommended bitrate varies by incoming codec, resolution, and frame rate. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for the current table rather than treating one figure as suitable for every setup.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Available upload capacity can fluctuate, and simultaneous traffic or a backup stream can reduce what remains for the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Preview, start, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Start streaming from OBS so it sends the audio and image to YouTube.
- Wait for the incoming preview in the Live Control Room. Confirm that the still image appears and the podcast audio is audible. Check for stream-health warnings.
- Start the event in the Live Control Room when the preview is ready, following the workflow shown for your stream. A private or unlisted test can help you check the exact arrangement before a public broadcast.
- Monitor stream health and listen for audio problems while the broadcast is running. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement like the planned stream; for a podcast with a still image, test the actual audio and image setup.
- When finished, stop sending content from OBS and end the event in the Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on that statement for a complete archive of a longer broadcast.
See YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming tips for its testing and monitoring guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming YouTube preview | Stream URL or key, encoder connection status, selected protocol, and whether OBS is actually sending. | Recheck the values in the Live Control Room and encoder settings; reconnect and start sending content. Keep the key private. |
| Image appears, but there is no sound | Media source file selection, source mute and volume, and OBS’s audio meter. | Play the file in the source, unmute or adjust it if needed, and listen to the preview before going live. |
| Choppy or interrupted output | Upload capacity, encoder bitrate and resolution, and other traffic using the connection. | Lower the bitrate or resolution to a level the connection can sustain, leave bandwidth headroom, and test again. |
| Audio ends early or does not repeat | The media source’s playback, restart, or loop behavior. | Check the chosen encoder’s setting; looping is not universal and should not be assumed. |
| Archive is incomplete or missing for a long show | Whether the broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive window. | If a complete copy matters, make a separate recording or backup plan rather than relying on the automatic archive for a longer stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded podcast content without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
