Gather Plant Fiber from bushes in Embervale, then open Manual Crafting and select String. Plant Fiber counts as “Any Fiber,” so it can be used in the recipe immediately after String crafting unlocks. Manual Crafting is instant and does not require a workstation; later in progression, the Spinning Wheel and Spinning Machine can produce String more efficiently or in larger batches.
This guide explains where to find Plant Fiber, how to craft String by hand, what each workstation changes, and which route fits immediate, efficient, or high-volume production.

String recipes at a glance
All three recipes accept Any Fiber. Plant Fiber is therefore a valid input for each route. The values below are the listed game-data figures for String and the two Hunter workstations.

The Spinning Wheel and Spinning Machine are progression-dependent Hunter workstations. If you have not reached the point where those stations are available, Manual Crafting is the usable route.

What you need before crafting
Plant Fiber
Plant Fiber comes mainly from bushes found throughout Embervale. You can also pick up Plant Fiber as a physical item in the world. Shrub Seedlings provide another long-term source because bushes can be grown from them.
Because every String recipe uses the generic Any Fiber category, you do not need a separate “String Fiber” material. Plant Fiber can fill that requirement directly. Other fiber items may also qualify, but Plant Fiber is the material covered by this guide.

Obtaining Plant Fiber unlocks the String recipe. Once Plant Fiber is in your inventory, open the crafting interface and look for String under Manual Crafting. The recipe should be available without first building a spinning station.
A place for the finished item
String is an ingredient rather than a tool you equip for this process. Leave room in your inventory or storage for the output, especially when processing a large stock at a workstation. Keep some Plant Fiber unconverted if another recipe explicitly asks for Plant Fiber instead of Any Fiber.
How to make String with Manual Crafting
Manual Crafting is the fastest way to obtain a small amount because the operation completes immediately and has no station requirement.
- Collect Plant Fiber. Harvest bushes in Embervale, pick up loose Plant Fiber, or use fiber obtained from your own grown bushes.
- Open Manual Crafting. Use the game’s crafting interface and switch to the manual recipe list.
- Select String. The recipe is unlocked by obtaining Plant Fiber. Confirm that the ingredient slot accepts Any Fiber.
- Provide the fiber. Plant Fiber satisfies the Any Fiber requirement. The Manual Crafting row in the table above shows the amount consumed for one craft.
- Confirm the craft. The String is produced instantly and placed in your inventory, subject to available space.
Manual Crafting is a good default when you need a few pieces for an immediate construction, weapon, armor, or utility recipe. It also avoids waiting for a workstation cycle. Its trade-off is material efficiency: the hand-crafted route consumes more fiber for each individual String than the Spinning Wheel.

Using the Spinning Wheel
When it becomes useful
The Spinning Wheel is a Hunter workstation that becomes available through progression. The exact point at which you can use it depends on your current progression, so the station may not appear during the opening portion of a world. Once it is available and placed, it provides a more fiber-efficient way to make String than Manual Crafting.
How to process Plant Fiber
- Place or access the Spinning Wheel after it has become available.
- Open the station’s recipe list and choose String.
- Move Plant Fiber into the station’s input or select it from the available inventory, depending on the interface shown in your game.
- Start the job and leave the station running until the listed cycle completes.
- Collect the finished String from the station output.
The Spinning Wheel’s recipe and cycle are listed in the comparison table. It consumes fewer fiber units per String than Manual Crafting, but it is not instant. That makes it a better choice when raw fiber is limited and you can tolerate a short production wait.
For planning, load the wheel before leaving to perform another task. The station’s value comes from letting time pass while you explore, gather, build, or manage another workstation. If you need String for something happening immediately, the manual route remains faster in real time.
Using the Spinning Machine for batches
Why use the machine
The Spinning Machine is the high-throughput option. It is also a progression-dependent Hunter workstation, so it is not a replacement for Manual Crafting at the beginning of a playthrough. Its recipe is designed for sustained production rather than a single urgent item.
Batch workflow
- Gain access to the Spinning Machine through normal progression.
- Open its production interface and select String.
- Supply the Plant Fiber needed for one batch, or provide another material that qualifies as Any Fiber.
- Start the batch and allow the listed production cycle to finish.
- Retrieve the String output before starting another batch if the interface requires the output slot to be cleared.
The machine produces a ten-String batch from ten units of Any Fiber during the listed one-minute-thirty-second cycle. This makes it practical when you repeatedly consume String and want to keep a reserve running rather than craft each piece manually.
Use the machine when you have enough raw fiber to meet the batch size and expect continuing demand. For a one-off requirement, loading a machine can take longer than simply opening Manual Crafting, particularly if the station is across your base or currently occupied.

Where to get more Plant Fiber
Bushes in Embervale
Bushes are the primary gathering target. Search natural vegetation while traveling, and harvest the bushes you pass instead of waiting until a recipe becomes urgent. This keeps a reserve available for String and for recipes that specifically name Plant Fiber.
Loose world items
Plant Fiber can appear as a physical item in the world. Pick it up whenever you see it; loose items supplement bush harvesting and can provide the final few units needed for a craft.
Grown bushes
Bushes can be grown from Shrub Seedlings. This gives you a renewable source near an established base, reducing the need to make a dedicated gathering trip every time you need more fiber.
Do not convert every unit automatically
String recipes accept Any Fiber, but not every recipe that uses Plant Fiber does. Before processing your entire stock, check upcoming crafting requirements and retain a reserve of raw Plant Fiber. Converting only the amount needed for String prevents a later trip to replace material that could have been kept.
Alternative ways to obtain String
Spider drops
Spiders can drop String. This is useful when you need the finished material immediately and would rather preserve Plant Fiber for another recipe. The amount available depends on what you encounter, so treat drops as a supplement rather than a guaranteed production plan.
World pickups
String can also appear as a physical item in the world. Pickups are the quickest source when you happen to find them, because they require no fiber and no workstation. Their availability is situational, so Manual Crafting or a workstation remains more dependable for planned quantities.

Choosing the best recipe for your situation

Immediate construction or repair
Choose Manual Crafting when String is blocking a task you want to complete now. The instant result matters more than the improved ratio when only a small amount is required.
Resource-constrained play
Choose the Spinning Wheel when your fiber reserve is the limiting factor. It stretches the same gathered material further, provided you can wait for its cycle and have already reached the required progression.
Base production
Choose the Spinning Machine when String is a recurring input. Queue batches while you are away from the station, and maintain a raw-fiber reserve so production does not stop between gathering runs.

Fiber and output planning examples
The following examples use the listed recipes and simple whole-number conversions. They help you decide how much Plant Fiber to collect before returning to your base.
- Small emergency supply: If you only need a few String for one immediate recipe, Manual Crafting minimizes elapsed time because there is no production cycle.
- Thirty fiber with Manual Crafting: Divide the available fiber by the hand-crafting input shown in the table and use only the whole crafts your stock supports. Any remainder stays available for other recipes.
- Thirty fiber at the Spinning Wheel: The wheel’s lower per-String input lets the same stock yield more finished String than hand crafting, although the total result arrives over multiple cycles.
- Ten-fiber machine batch: Reserve the machine’s complete batch input when you want its full output. Starting with less than a complete batch may leave the station idle, depending on how the interface handles insufficient materials.
- Mixed-material inventory: Because the recipe is Any Fiber, the station can use qualifying fiber from your inventory. Check the selected input before confirming if you are trying to protect a particular material.
These are planning methods, not additional recipes: the authoritative input, output, and time values are the three rows in the comparison table.

String does not appear in Manual Crafting
Confirm that you have obtained Plant Fiber at least once and that you are looking in the Manual Crafting recipe list rather than a workstation-only list. Obtaining Plant Fiber is the stated unlock condition for String.

The game says you lack ingredients
Check that the required amount of a qualifying fiber is actually in your inventory. Plant Fiber is accepted because it belongs to Any Fiber, but a different material may not qualify if it is not categorized as fiber. Gather more from bushes or collect loose world items, then reopen the recipe.
The Spinning Wheel or Spinning Machine is unavailable
Both stations depend on progression. Continue the progression that unlocks Hunter workstations; until the station becomes available, use Manual Crafting or obtain String from spiders and world pickups.
You ran out of Plant Fiber after making String
Do not process your entire stock automatically. Keep raw Plant Fiber for recipes that explicitly require it, then gather additional bushes or grow bushes from Shrub Seedlings for a renewable supply.
You need String faster than a station can produce it
Use Manual Crafting for the immediate quantity and leave workstation production running for later demand. Spider drops and world pickups can also fill an urgent gap without consuming Plant Fiber.
The machine output is not ready
Verify that the batch was started, that the listed cycle has finished, and that the output can be collected. If the station is waiting for more input, supply the complete amount required by its String recipe.

The Official Enshrouded Wiki describes String as “Used to bind things together, String is an extremely important item.” That description reflects how often String appears as a binding component across crafting. Treat it as a material to keep in reserve, but do not sacrifice every unit of Plant Fiber to build that reserve: raw-fiber requirements still matter.
A practical routine is to gather bushes during normal travel, keep a protected Plant Fiber reserve, craft urgent String manually, and run the Spinning Wheel or Spinning Machine whenever your progression and workload justify the wait. This approach covers early-game needs without a station and scales to larger production later.
