While a movie is playing, open the playback controls and look for Audio & Subtitles, Captions, or a language menu. Choose subtitles or captions for on-screen text, and choose an audio or language track for spoken dialogue. The exact button depends on the streaming service and device, and you can select only the tracks offered for that title.

Start with the movie’s playback controls

  1. Start playing the movie, then reveal its controls. Depending on your device, tap or click the video, press an arrow or Play/Pause button on the remote, or bring up the playback timeline.
  2. Open the menu labeled Audio & Subtitles, Captions, Subtitles, Audio, or Languages. A speech-bubble or keyboard icon may open it.
  3. Choose a subtitle or caption track for on-screen text. To change spoken dialogue, choose an audio or language track. These are usually separate choices.

The available choices vary by movie and may also depend on your profile, device, plan, or region. If you cannot find a language in the playback menu, check the movie’s details page and the service’s help instructions.

Steps for each streaming service

Netflix

Play the movie and reveal the controls. On a phone or tablet, tap the screen; on a computer, click it. On many TVs, streaming players, cable boxes, and game systems, press the up or down arrow on the remote. On Apple TV, swipe up or press up. Select Audio & Subtitles, choose an available option, or select Other to see more listed choices. Netflix notes that tracks vary by title. Netflix’s subtitles and audio instructions also explain that some foreign-language dialogue may be subtitled even when subtitle settings are off. Most Kids titles watched from an adult profile do not save subtitle or audio preferences.

Disney+

During playback, open the settings menu using the keyboard icon. It is usually at the upper right on web and mobile, and at the lower right on TV-connected devices; some devices use a three-dot icon. Choose an available audio, captions, or subtitles option. Disney+ says the last-used settings are applied to the next title where those languages are available. If the track you want is missing, check the app language and the device’s accessibility settings. Disney+ playback help covers its playback controls.

Alternative audio tracks and audio description have separate instructions in Prime Video’s accessibility help. The available features depend on the title and device.

Roku

During playback, press the Star button on the Roku remote to open the app’s menu for captions, sound, or language. You can also check Settings > Accessibility > Captions mode for Roku’s device-level caption setting. Some streaming apps manage captions themselves and do not use the Roku setting, so change captions inside the app if the device setting has no effect. Roku explains: “Some apps use their own captions and skip the setting on your Roku device.” See Roku’s streaming-app troubleshooting guidance.

If subtitles or the audio language are missing

  • The playback menu will not appear: tap or click the video, press a remote arrow or Play/Pause, or bring up the timeline. The gesture differs by service and device.
  • Your preferred language is not listed: check the title’s details page, then confirm the app language and any profile, region, device, or plan limitations relevant to the service.
  • Roku captions do not change: turn them on in the streaming app’s playback menu. An app-managed track may ignore Roku’s accessibility setting.
  • The spoken language is wrong on Roku: open the app’s sound or language menu during playback and select a listed audio track.
  • The problem continues: try another title, another app, or another device. If it occurs only in one app, contact that streaming service; if it happens across apps, check the device’s settings or support information.
