Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To prefer accessible captions on an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning and turn on Closed Captions + SDH. For a specific video, choose a subtitle or caption track in the playback controls. To get real-time text for spoken audio instead of a supplied video track, use Live Captions where supported.
Turn on the captions preference
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then Subtitles & Captioning.
- Turn on Closed Captions + SDH.
This setting tells supported apps to prefer closed captions and subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) when the video provides them. It does not create captions for a video that has no caption or subtitle track. Apple’s instructions for iPhone and iPad describe the preference and appearance controls.

Choose a track for one video
Start the video, open its playback controls, tap Subtitles or the captions control, and select an available track. The control name and placement can differ between apps. The video and app determine which languages and caption types are offered; even in the Apple TV app, track availability varies by title. See Apple’s instructions for changing subtitles or languages in the Apple TV app.
Make captions easier to read
In Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning, tap Style to select or customize the caption appearance. Available controls include font, size, text color, background color and opacity, text opacity, edge style, and highlight. Adjust these options if captions are hard to distinguish against the video.

#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Use Live Captions for spoken audio
Live Captions is a separate accessibility feature: it transcribes spoken audio in real time, including supported app audio and live conversations. It is not a subtitle track supplied with a video, and it is not interchangeable with the captions preference.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then Live Captions.
- Turn on Live Captions.
Apple’s iPhone guide lists iPhone 11 or later as supported. Live Captions is not available in every language, country, or region, and accuracy may vary. If the setting is missing, check the device model, software, and locale against Apple’s iPhone Live Captions guide or iPad Live Captions guide. Apple cautions: “The accuracy of Live Captions may vary and shouldn’t be relied upon in high-risk or emergency situations.”

Subtitles and captions versus Live Captions
| Feature | Where the text comes from | Where to use it | What affects availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subtitles, closed captions, and SDH | A track supplied with the video | A supported app’s video player | The app, video, and available tracks |
| Live Captions | Real-time transcription of spoken audio | Supported app audio and live conversations | Device model, language, country, and region |
If subtitles or captions do not appear
- Check the video’s tracks: Open the playback controls and see whether a subtitle or caption option is available. The system preference cannot supply a missing track.
- Select a track in the player: The app may require you to choose a language or caption option for that title.
- Check the right setting: Closed Captions + SDH is for supplied video tracks; Live Captions is for real-time transcription and has separate availability limits.
- If Live Captions is absent: Check whether the iPhone model, software, language, and region support it using Apple’s device-specific guide.
