To restore the screenshot pop-up in Windows 11, turn on notifications and notification banners for Snipping Tool: open Start > Settings > System > Notifications, then enable the Snipping Tool controls. The banner appears for Snipping Tool captures; selecting it opens the image in the Snipping Tool editor.
Enable Snipping Tool screenshot notifications
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Make sure the overall Notifications setting is on.
- Under notifications from apps and other senders, select Snipping Tool. Turn on its notifications and Show notification banners. Turn on sound only if you want an audible alert.
- Take a screenshot with Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft documents this shortcut as opening the Snipping Tool overlay. When the capture is complete, select its notification to open the image in the Snipping Tool editor. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions describe this notification workflow.
If the screenshot pop-up still does not appear
Check the two notification switches
Windows has an overall notifications control as well as controls for individual apps. If notifications are disabled globally, enable them first; then check that Snipping Tool notifications are on and that Show notification banners is enabled. The banner control matters when notifications are arriving but no pop-up appears. See Microsoft’s Windows notification settings guidance.
Check Do not disturb and notification center
Do not disturb can suppress ordinary banners while leaving notifications available in notification center. Select the clock or notification bell to open notification center, or press Windows key + N, and look for the screenshot notification there. If this happens repeatedly, check whether Do not disturb is being activated by a schedule or another condition. Microsoft’s focus settings guidance explains Do not disturb behavior.
If Snipping Tool is missing from the app list
Search Settings for Notifications, take a screenshot with Snipping Tool, and revisit the app list. If Snipping Tool still does not appear, consult current Windows or Snipping Tool support guidance; the available Microsoft instructions do not establish a universal fix for this case.

On a work or school PC
Some Windows controls can be affected by organizational management. If a setting is unavailable, ask your IT administrator. Microsoft’s note about managed settings concerns Windows Security specifically, so it does not establish that every Snipping Tool notification option is controlled by policy.
Which screenshots trigger this notification?
The documented completion alert is part of the Snipping Tool workflow. Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool overlay, and Microsoft’s instructions say the resulting notification can be selected to open the image in the editor. Do not assume every third-party capture utility or every other screenshot method will generate the same alert.
