To use mobile live streaming, your channel must have at least 50 subscribers, be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and have live streaming enabled. You must also meet YouTube’s age rule and use a supported phone or tablet. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Check whether your channel and device are eligible
Before looking for the Live button, check YouTube’s requirements. These are the mobile live-streaming rules listed in YouTube Help; the pages do not show publication dates, so labels and requirements may change.
- At least 50 subscribers: this threshold applies to mobile live streaming. A channel retains mobile access until it falls below 50 subscribers.
- Channel verification: YouTube verifies a channel using a phone number and a code sent by text message or voice call.
- No live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days: policy or copyright matters can temporarily or permanently disable live streaming.
- Live streaming enabled: your first mobile stream may take up to 24 hours to become available after you turn it on.
- Supported operating system: YouTube lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later.
- Age: YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance sets a minimum age of 16.
Start a live stream in the YouTube app
- Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet and sign in to the channel you want to use.
- Tap Create at the bottom of the screen, then tap Live.
- Tap Edit to set up the stream. Choose its title and other details, set visibility and audience, and optionally schedule it or choose to screencast your phone. You can also review live-chat options, including age restriction and monetisation settings.
- Review the details, then tap Go live when you are ready.
- When you finish, tap Finish. YouTube shows a recap and creates a stream archive on your channel. You can change the archive’s privacy or delete it. A Short highlight may also be available; it defaults to private.
Start a scheduled mobile stream
Open Create → Live → Calendar, select the scheduled stream, then tap Go live.
Set privacy and account for age-related rules
Check the visibility setting before you start. YouTube documents different mobile defaults by age: streams default to unlisted for users aged 13–17 and public for users aged 18 or older. You can choose public, private, or unlisted when setting up the stream.

YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says creators must be at least 16. It also says that if a stream features 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult, live chat may be disabled or the account may temporarily lose live chat or other features. On an adult-owned account, a participant under 16 must be visibly accompanied by the adult.
What to expect with fewer than 1,000 subscribers
Eligible channels with 50–999 subscribers may have a viewer cap, and their stream archives may be set to private by default. YouTube says those adjustments can take a few weeks to appear. After a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, removing the audience limitation can also take several weeks; if it drops below 1,000, the limitation returns.

If Create → Live is missing or unavailable
- Confirm you are signed in to the right channel. Check its subscriber count; mobile streaming requires at least 50.
- Check channel verification. YouTube sends a verification code by text or voice call. If it does not arrive, try the other delivery method or another carrier; some carriers do not support Google messages.
- Check live-streaming restrictions. A policy or copyright restriction within the previous 90 days can block access. Do not try to evade an active restriction by streaming from another channel: YouTube prohibits this and says it can lead to account termination.
- Allow time for first-time activation. After enabling live streaming, access may take up to 24 hours to appear.
- Check the device’s operating system. YouTube lists Android 8.0+ and iOS 8+ for mobile streaming.
If you do not meet mobile eligibility requirements, YouTube also provides webcam, encoder, and console streaming methods. Its guidance describes mobile as suitable for vlogging and quick updates, while an encoder can support gameplay, overlays, and external hardware. YouTube Help says expensive equipment is not necessary; a phone holder or tripod is an optional way to keep a phone steady, not a platform requirement.
