To keep an iPhone updated automatically, turn on Automatically Install under Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. To install security fixes between iOS releases on iOS 26, also turn on Automatically Install under Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements. These are separate controls.

Turn on automatic iOS updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then Software Update, then Automatic Updates.
  3. Under iOS Updates, turn on Automatically Install. Apple says iPhone downloads and installs the update overnight when it is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, and notifies you before installation.

If you prefer to download updates automatically but install them yourself, turn off Automatically Install and select Automatically Download. Apple says downloads happen while the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi, charging, and locked; installation is left for later. Apple’s current instructions say this option appears after Automatically Install is turned off.

Apple recommends backing up your iPhone before updating. You can check the installed iOS version and available updates at Settings > General > Software Update. If an update has already downloaded, the screen may offer Update Now or Update Tonight. See Apple’s iOS 26 update instructions.

Turn on Background Security Improvements

On iOS 26, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements, then turn on Automatically Install. This setting is independent of the automatic iOS update controls.

Apple describes Background Security Improvements as additional protections delivered between software updates, including lightweight releases for components such as Safari, WebKit, and other system libraries. Apple says they are supported and enabled for future releases starting with iOS 26.1. If you turn the setting off, the device will not receive these improvements until they are included in a subsequent software update. In rare compatibility cases, an improvement may be temporarily removed and enhanced in a future update. Details are in Apple’s Background Security Improvements overview and iPhone setup instructions.

Know which automatic update control does what

Control What it covers What to expect
iOS Updates > Automatically Install iOS software updates Downloads and installs overnight when the iPhone is charging and on Wi-Fi; Apple says it notifies you before installation.
iOS Updates > Automatically Download iOS software updates Downloads automatically under Apple’s stated Wi-Fi, charging, and locked conditions, but leaves installation for later.
System Files > Automatically Install System file updates A separate control in Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Apple says you can turn off automatic iOS installation and enable this option to install system file updates automatically.
Background Security Improvements > Automatically Install Security improvements between software updates A separate iOS 26 control under Settings > Privacy & Security.

Apple’s iOS 26 user guide explains the separate iOS update and System Files settings. Follow the labels shown on your iPhone; do not assume these update types share one switch.

If a setting or update is missing

  • Check your iOS version: Go to Settings > General > Software Update. The Background Security Improvements instructions apply to iOS 26. Older versions may use different labels or settings.
  • Check device compatibility: Apple’s current iOS 26 guide lists iPhone 11 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). That compatibility list applies to iOS 26; it does not mean every older iPhone supports every release. iPhone shows only updates compatible with that device.
  • Check whether the phone is managed: A work- or school-managed iPhone may have update behavior restricted or scheduled by an administrator. Contact your organization’s administrator if controls are unavailable. Apple documents organizational settings in its software update deployment reference, which uses the configuration label RapidSecurityResponse for Background Security Improvements.

What “Rapid Security Responses” means now

“Rapid Security Responses” is older terminology for this reader-facing setting. Apple’s current iPhone consumer instructions call it Background Security Improvements; the deployment reference retains the RapidSecurityResponse label for managed-device configuration. For an iPhone running iOS 26, use the Background Security Improvements control in Privacy & Security rather than looking for a consumer setting necessarily named “Security Responses & System Files.”

Apple also advises keeping software up to date as an important part of maintaining device security. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad update guidance.
