To use Apple Watch Nightstand Mode, turn it on at Settings > General > Nightstand Mode, then connect the watch to a powered charger. The display shows the time, date, charging status and the time of any alarm you have set. Apple’s current guidance describes the feature and alarm behavior in its Apple Watch alarm guide.
Turn on Nightstand Mode
- On Apple Watch, open Settings.
- Tap General, then Nightstand Mode.
- Turn on Nightstand Mode.
- Connect the watch to a powered charger and place its back against the magnetic charging surface. Apple recommends the magnetic charger supplied with the watch; MagSafe Duo and compatible third-party chargers are also options, as described in its charging guide.
The bedside display appears while the watch is charging. Tap the display or lightly nudge the watch to see the time; tapping or nudging the table may also wake it.
What the bedside display shows
When Nightstand Mode is active on a charging watch, the screen shows the current time and date, charging status, and the time of any alarm that is set. It is a charger-based clock display; it is not the same feature as Always On for the watch face.
Apple’s display guidance says Low Power Mode disables Always On. That does not establish that Always On must be enabled for Nightstand Mode, which is activated by connecting the watch to its charger with the mode turned on. See Apple’s display settings guidance.

Set and manage alarms
Open the Alarms app on Apple Watch to add an alarm, choose AM or PM, set the time and save it. From the app, you can also switch alarms on or off and edit their time, repeat days, label, snooze setting, snooze duration, and whether sound breaks through Silent Mode while you are wearing the watch.
Apple says an alarm set in the Alarms app gently wakes you with a unique alarm sound when the watch is in Nightstand Mode. When it sounds, press the side button to stop it or the Digital Crown to snooze it. Alarms and timers still sound while Apple Watch is charging even if Silent Mode is on, according to Apple’s Silent Mode guidance.

Route iPhone alarm alerts to the watch
To have an iPhone alarm alert the watch, open the Apple Watch app on iPhone and go to My Watch > Clock, then enable Push Alerts from iPhone. This sends iPhone alarm alerts to the watch. An alarm set on Apple Watch does not alert the iPhone, according to Apple’s alarm guide.
Fix a Nightstand Mode display that stays dark
- Check the mode: On the watch, go to Settings > General > Nightstand Mode and make sure it is on.
- Check charging: Confirm the charger is connected to power and the watch’s back is positioned against its magnetic charging surface.
- Wake the display: Tap the screen or press or turn the Digital Crown. Apple’s wake guidance says that if the watch does not wake from a tap or Digital Crown action, it may need charging.
Do you need a bedside stand?
No. Nightstand Mode requires an enabled setting and a charger, not a dedicated stand. A compatible Apple Watch charging stand or dock can make a bedside setup easier, but check that it accommodates your charger puck and watch configuration. Some stands hold a charger you already own; do not assume a stand includes a charger. Apple’s charging guidance recognizes compatible third-party chargers but does not endorse a particular stand model.
