Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo enable Android’s phone-level Advanced Protection, set a screen lock, then open Settings > Security & Privacy > Other settings > Advanced Protection and switch on Device protection. Choose whether to enable optional Intrusion Logging, tap Turn on, and restart if prompted. On Android 16, the settings page also lists apps that checked Device protection status—but it does not provide a detailed on/off dashboard for every underlying feature.
Turn on Device protection
- Set a screen lock. Use a PIN, pattern, or password if you do not already have one. Google requires a screen lock to enable Advanced Protection.
- Open the Advanced Protection setting. The usual path is Settings > Security & Privacy > Other settings > Advanced Protection. On some devices, use Settings > Google > All services > Personal and device safety > Advanced Protection instead. Menu wording can vary by device. Google’s Android Help
- Enable Device protection. Turn on Device protection on the Advanced Protection page.
- Choose whether to use Intrusion Logging. It is optional. If you enable it, select the Google Account where encrypted logs will be backed up. Consider the privacy and handling details below before opting in.
- Tap Turn on and restart if needed. Some protections require a reboot. If you postpone it, return to Advanced Protection and choose Restart now.
What Device protection covers
Device protection is an umbrella control for several groups of safeguards. While it is on, it can prevent users or malicious apps from disabling covered settings individually. The exact protections available or implemented can depend on the phone, Android build, and manufacturer.
Apps
- Google Play Protect scans apps and devices and cannot be turned off while Device protection is enabled.
- Installing or updating apps from unknown sources can be blocked.
- Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) applies to supported apps and may affect performance.
- Accessibility services are restricted to verified tools.
Device safety
Google lists Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Inactivity Reboot, USB Protection, Failed Authentication Lock, Watch Unlock restriction, and Automatic Call Screen in supported regions. Inactivity Reboot restarts the phone if it remains locked for 72 hours, according to Google’s feature specification.
Availability is not universal. For example, Google documents USB Protection for Pixel 6 and later; details are in Google’s USB Protection help page.

Investigation
Intrusion Logging, if enabled, records selected device and network events. It is a separate optional feature rather than a requirement for Device protection.

Check which apps queried Device protection
On Android 16, open Settings > Security & Privacy > Advanced Protection, scroll to the bottom, and tap Apps that checked for Device protection. This list shows applications that can check Device protection status. It does not show the state of every individual security feature, so it should not be treated as a comprehensive checklist.
The primary status to check is whether the Device protection control is on. If Android asks for a restart, some protections may not take effect until you restart. Feature availability also varies by device.

If you remove your screen lock after enabling the mode, Google says Advanced Protection remains active, but some protections might not function optimally and a warning appears.
Device protection is not Google Account Advanced Protection
The Advanced Protection page offers distinct controls for Device protection and Account protection. The first applies to the phone. Account protection starts a separate Google Account enrollment process; it is not required to turn on Device protection.

Google Account Advanced Protection can use passkeys or security keys. It requires the passkey or key to sign in on a new device, can restrict some third-party apps and services that access sensitive account data, and adds steps to account recovery. These account sign-in and access changes are different from the phone-level restrictions described above. See Google Account Advanced Protection for enrollment details.

Google says Intrusion Logging can record app activity, app installations and changes, network events such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DNS lookups and IP addresses, USB file transfers, system certificate changes, and device lock or unlock events. Logs stored on Google servers are protected with device-generated end-to-end encryption; Google says the encryption keys are protected by the account password and screen-lock credentials. Details are in Google’s Intrusion Logging help page.

- Google retains encrypted logs for 12 months, then automatically deletes them. You cannot manually delete them before that period ends.
- You can download and decrypt logs, but downloaded decrypted files are your responsibility to secure.
- System-level logging does not exclude Chrome Incognito network events. Someone with access to a log may be able to infer visited sites, though not the particular pages.
If setup or status checking does not match these steps
- You cannot enable Device protection: first set a PIN, pattern, or password screen lock.
- You cannot find the setting: try the alternate route through Settings > Google > All services > Personal and device safety > Advanced Protection. Labels vary across devices.
- A restart prompt appears: restart to apply protections that require a reboot, or return to the Advanced Protection page and choose Restart now later.
- The app-query list is missing: Google documents Apps that checked for Device protection as an Android 16 setting; its absence does not provide a feature-by-feature status report.
- A listed protection does not appear to apply: feature support can depend on device and manufacturer. Google, for example, specifies Pixel 6 and later for USB Protection.
