To stop a green light on an Echo, first identify its pattern: pulsing or flashing green means an incoming call; spinning or cycling green means an active call or Drop In. For a spinning light, say “Alexa, hang up.” To prevent Drop In on one Echo, switch it off in that device’s Communication settings in the Alexa app. Use Do Not Disturb for a temporary pause on calls and messages.
Identify what the green light means
Amazon distinguishes two green-light patterns: pulsing or flashing green signals an incoming call, while spinning or cycling green indicates an active call or Drop In. See Amazon’s Echo light meanings and its light-ring indicator guidance.
The green light is a communications status indicator, not a separate brightness setting. To stop it, end the call or change the communication feature causing it.
Stop the green light
End an active call or Drop In
If the light is spinning, say “Alexa, hang up” or “Hang Up.” Amazon recommends checking voice history if you did not expect the call or Drop In; Alexa may have misheard a request. Its green-light troubleshooting steps cover both actions.

Disable Drop In on one Echo
- Open the Alexa app and select Devices.
- Choose the Device Type filter, then select Echo & Alexa.
- Select the Echo you want to change, then open Settings > Communication.
- Turn off Drop In.
This prevents household members and permitted contacts from connecting to that Echo using Drop In. The setting is device-specific; Amazon’s instructions are in Turn Off Communications for Specific Alexa Devices. For more about the feature, see How Does Drop In Work with Alexa?
Turn off all Communications on one Echo
Use the same app route—Devices > Device Type > Echo & Alexa > your device > Settings > Communication—and turn off Communication only if you want to disable all communication options on that device. This is broader than turning off Drop In alone.
