League of Legends has no documented player setting that replaces every champion skin, particle, animation, kill effect, and other cosmetic with the default version. You can reduce rendering load with the in-game Video controls, and some modes expose a selective Hide Eye Candy option. Those controls can make the game less visually busy, but they do not convert all champions to base skins or restore every default particle.
To change the supported settings, enter a match, press Esc, and open Video. Lower Effects Quality first; then adjust the other video or interface options according to whether your problem is low performance, visual distraction, or a mode-specific effect.

Use the in-game controls first
The documented route is available while you are in a match. Settings may be useful for ordinary play or for diagnosing rendering problems, but they are controls for graphics and interface presentation rather than a skin inventory switch.

- Start a match. A custom game is the safest place to experiment if you are troubleshooting crashes or instability.
- Press Esc to open the in-game options.
- Select Video.
- Set Effects Quality to a lower level. Riot’s support guidance uses Very Low as a starting point when the goal is to reduce rendering load.
- Apply the change, then check the same scene or ability that was causing difficulty. If the problem continues, adjust the related video and interface controls described below rather than expecting the champion to revert to a base skin.
Riot does not publish an FPS percentage or a guaranteed performance gain for any quality level. The practical result depends on your hardware, the scene, and the effects being rendered, so treat Very Low as a troubleshooting starting point, not a promised benchmark.

What Effects Quality changes
Effects Quality controls the quality and rendering load of visual effects. Lowering it can make particles and other effects less demanding to draw. It is useful when the problem is stutter, rendering pressure, or an overly busy screen, but it is not a command to load the default champion model or the default version of every ability.
Other Video settings
Riot’s support settings list includes several controls that can be adjusted alongside Effects Quality:
- Character Quality: lowers the rendering quality used for character models. This changes visual fidelity; it does not select a different skin.
- Environment Quality: reduces the detail used for the map and surrounding environment.
- Shadows: reduces or removes shadow detail, which can lower visual load and screen clutter.
- Frame-rate cap: limits the maximum frame rate. A cap can make frame delivery more predictable, but Riot does not state that a particular cap will fix a specific system.
- V-Sync: synchronizes rendered frames with the display’s refresh cycle. It is a display-timing option, not a cosmetic toggle.
- Anti-aliasing: changes edge smoothing. Lowering it can reduce image processing, while disabling it makes edges look sharper or more jagged.
These settings address how the game is rendered. None promises to remove a skin’s identity, recolor an ability to its default particle set, or hide every cosmetic animation.

Use Hide Eye Candy when the mode provides it
Hide Eye Candy is narrower than the Video quality controls. It is a selective switch for an effect defined by a particular game mode or client version, not a global “hide cosmetics” command.

A documented Arena example
Riot’s Patch 25.05 notes describe an Arena arachnophobia option. When that option is enabled, the game removes spiders, Elise’s spider form when a player is cocooned, and related spider visuals. This is an example of the toggle doing exactly what its label promises: hiding a defined category of environmental or mode-specific visuals.
Why the option may not solve a skin problem
The Arena example does not establish that Hide Eye Candy removes champion skins, skin particles, recall animations, kill effects, or every flashy object in every mode. If the option appears in your client, read the mode’s description and use it for the effect it names. If it is absent, that mode or client build is not exposing that particular control; the general Video settings remain the documented path for broader rendering adjustments.
Why lowering effects does not restore default skins
A skin is more than a texture applied to a model. Riot has explained that skin coloration can be integrated into particles and abilities. In its 2018 Ask Riot: Assassins and Chromas article, Riot gave this example: With the PROJECT skin lines—PROJECT: Leona for example—the yellow extends past her shield and sword; it’s also integrated into her autottacks and abilities.
That design explains why an effects-quality slider cannot be treated as a skin replacer. It can lower rendering quality or visual load while the game still uses the skin’s model, colors, sound-linked presentation, and ability effects. Some details may become less prominent; they do not automatically become the base champion’s assets.

There is no documented universal player switch
Riot’s engineering discussion of per-skin and global rendering toggles describes controls used internally to handle bugs and development cases. It does not present those toggles as settings available to players. The supported player workflow therefore consists of the Video controls, any mode-specific Hide Eye Candy option, and the listed interface reductions—not a universal “all skins off” setting.

If the issue is low FPS, stutter, or rendering pressure
- Open Esc → Video in a match.
- Lower Effects Quality; use Very Low as Riot’s troubleshooting starting point.
- If the scene is still demanding, lower Character Quality, Environment Quality, and Shadows.
- Review the frame-rate cap, V-Sync, and anti-aliasing choices as display and frame-delivery adjustments.
- Test the result in a controlled match before returning to a normal game.
This sequence reduces rendering complexity in stages. It does not guarantee a particular frame rate, and it does not promise that a skin’s particles will be replaced by default particles.
If the issue is visual distraction
- Lower Effects Quality so effects are less visually intense.
- Disable HUD animations if that interface motion is distracting.
- Consider disabling line missile display, attack range display, or target-frame-on-attack when those overlays add clutter.
- Look for Hide Eye Candy in a mode that documents a relevant effect, such as the Arena spider option.
These choices can make the screen calmer without changing the champion or the rules of the match. Interface reductions are separate from champion cosmetics, so a skin may remain fully identifiable even after overlays and animations are reduced.
If you specifically want default particles or base champion models
The documented settings do not provide that result globally. Lowering Effects Quality, Character Quality, or Environment Quality changes rendering quality. Hide Eye Candy removes only the defined effect for the mode that exposes it. Neither option is documented as loading the default particle set or base model for every champion.

Verify changes safely
When you are changing options because the game crashes, freezes, or becomes unstable, Riot recommends testing in a custom game with bots or by yourself first. A controlled test lets you check the same ability, map area, or effect without adding the uncertainty of a live match.
- Create or enter a custom game.
- Use Esc → Video to make one change at a time, beginning with Effects Quality.
- Reproduce the visual or performance problem in that controlled match.
- If needed, make the next adjustment from the Video or interface list, then test again.
- For a mode-specific effect, enter that mode and check whether its own Hide Eye Candy control is available and whether the named object disappears.
Testing one setting at a time makes the result easier to interpret. If a particular skin or ability still appears after Effects Quality is reduced, that is expected: the setting changes rendering quality, not the champion’s selected cosmetic.
What to avoid
Unofficial skin-swapping utilities and file modifications are outside Riot’s documented settings workflow. They can create support or account risks, and there is no current policy evidence here to claim a specific enforcement result. If your goal is performance or a less crowded screen, stay with the in-game Video, interface, and mode-specific controls.

For the broadest supported reduction, use Esc → Video, lower Effects Quality, and then tune character, environment, shadow, frame-rate, V-Sync, and anti-aliasing settings as needed. For a defined mode effect, use Hide Eye Candy when that mode offers it. Do not expect either path to turn every champion into a base skin or to restore every default particle and animation; League does not document a universal player-facing switch for that purpose.
