To disable Gemini features, open Google Photos and go to Profile picture > Photos settings > Preferences > Gemini features in Photos. Turn off Use Gemini in Photos to disable Ask Photos and other Gemini-powered features, or turn off Search with Ask Photos to disable only the Ask Photos search experience. Other controls separately manage suggested memory titles, memories and creations, face grouping, and the connection to the Gemini app.
Turn off Ask Photos or Gemini features in Google Photos
- Open the Google Photos app and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Photos settings > Preferences > Gemini features in Photos.
- Turn off Search with Ask Photos to disable the Ask Photos search experience. To disable Ask Photos and other Gemini-powered features in Photos, turn off Use Gemini in Photos.
Google says you can turn Ask Photos back on later. On iOS, Google documents the corresponding route through Google Photos settings, Preferences, and Gemini features in Photos. Labels and availability may differ by account, region, and app version; if the setting is missing, your account may not yet be eligible. See Google’s Ask Photos Help for details.
Limit suggested titles, memories, and creations
These controls are separate from the Gemini feature switches. Changing them can reduce particular suggestions or generated creations without establishing that all Gemini features are disabled.
Stop suggested memory titles
In Preferences, open AI features by Labs and turn off Help me title. If you have opted into Gemini features, Google says this control may instead appear under Gemini features in Photos. The title feature is experimental and, according to Google’s Help page, is currently available in most locations in the United States. See Google’s memory-title Help page.

- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Change which memories or creations appear
Go to Preferences > Memories > Memory types to turn off memory categories or individual creation types. Google lists Remix, Animations, Cinematic photos, Collages, Color Pops, and Stylized photos among the creation types. These are individual memory and creation controls, not a universal AI-off setting. Details are in Google’s featured memories Help.
Hide a specific face from memories
In Hide faces, choose Show less or Blocked for a person. Show less reduces memories centered on that person but may still include them in group photos. Blocked excludes them from memories, including group photos. This changes what appears in memories; it does not turn off AI features generally.

Understand the consequences of turning off Face Groups
Face Groups is a separate organization and privacy control. Google says that turning it off deletes face groups, the face models used to create them, and face labels you created. Consider this consequence before switching it off: it is more far-reaching than disabling Ask Photos alone. On the web, the documented route is photos.google.com/settings > Group similar faces > Face Groups. See Google’s Face Groups Help.
Face Groups also matters for some Ask Photos capabilities. Google’s Android editing instructions say Ask Photos editing requires Face Groups to be on, as well as location estimates and opt-in to both Use Gemini in Photos and Ask Photos. Google lists a personal Google Account and age 18 or older as requirements for Ask Photos editing; Workspace and school accounts are not eligible. See Google’s editing Help.

Disconnect Google Photos from the separate Gemini app
The connection between Google Photos and Gemini Apps is distinct from Gemini features inside Photos. If you connected Photos to the Gemini app and want to stop that integration, disconnect Google Photos in the Gemini app’s Connected Apps settings. Google says the Photos connection’s availability varies by supported country or territory. It also says Gemini Apps returns photos and videos found by Google Photos and cannot use Photos editing features. See Google’s Gemini Apps connection Help.
What changes when you use these controls?
| Control | What it changes | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Search with Ask Photos | Disables the Ask Photos search experience. | Does not, by itself, establish that other Gemini features in Photos are disabled. |
| Use Gemini in Photos | Disables Ask Photos and other Gemini-powered features in Google Photos. | Controls and availability can vary by account and location. |
| Help me title | Disables suggested titles for memories. | Google describes this as an experimental feature; availability is limited by location. |
| Memory types | Turns off selected memory categories or creation types. | Individual settings do not amount to a universal AI-off switch. |
| Face Groups | Turns off face grouping. | Google says this deletes face groups, face models, and user-created face labels; it can also remove a prerequisite for Ask Photos editing. |
| Gemini Apps Connected Apps | Disconnects Google Photos from the separate Gemini app. | This is independent of Gemini features within Google Photos. |
Review Ask Photos privacy and activity separately
Turning off a feature is not the same as deleting all data previously processed by it. Google’s Gemini features in Photos privacy hub says information associated with Ask Photos can include a list of photos and videos studied to answer queries, with details such as timestamps, locations, faces, and sometimes AI-generated descriptions. Google says personal data in Photos is never used for ads.
Google also provides separate controls for query review and Ask Photos activity. To manage access to queries, the Help page describes turning off access under Help us improve photos; a separate Your Ask Photos Activity control is available. These settings are distinct from the switches that disable Gemini features. Google’s Ask Photos Help cautions that the experimental feature “won’t always get it right, and may give inaccurate or inappropriate answers that don’t represent Google’s views.”

If a setting is missing
- Check eligibility and location: Ask Photos and related functions are not available to every user or in every region; functionality varies by location.
- Check which product you mean: Gemini features inside Photos, the separate Gemini app connection, and memory or creation suggestions have different controls.
- Check prerequisites before disabling Face Groups: Google lists it as a requirement for Ask Photos editing, so turning it off may remove that capability.
- Use the available control rather than assuming a global switch exists: If a setting is absent, Google says the account may not yet be eligible.
