There is no single Gmail switch for every AI feature. To turn off Gemini in Gmail, disable Smart features in Google Workspace. To turn off Gmail’s app-level tools—including Smart Compose, Smart Reply, email categorization, and summary cards—disable Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet. You can also change Smart Compose or Smart Reply individually.
Turn off Gemini in Gmail
Google’s Gmail Help says turning off Smart features in Google Workspace also turns off AI-powered Workspace features such as Gemini in Gmail. This setting has wider effects than Gmail alone: it can also disable other connected Workspace experiences.
On a computer
- Open Gmail and select Settings, then See all settings.
- Under General, find Google Workspace smart features and select Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Turn off Smart features in Google Workspace, then save your changes.
On Android
- Open the Gmail app and tap Menu → Settings.
- Select the account you want to change.
- Under General, tap Google Workspace smart features and uncheck Smart features in Google Workspace.
The Android option and its exact label may vary with the app version and account. Google’s instructions describe this Android path; the supplied guidance does not specify an equivalent iOS path.
Turn off Gmail’s app-level smart features
This is a separate control from the Workspace-wide setting. On a computer, open Gmail Settings → See all settings → General, find the smart-features section, and untick Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.

Google says this setting applies across devices and apps where you are signed in. It controls Gmail and related app experiences such as automatic email categorization, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and Gmail summary cards. Turning it off is broader than changing a writing suggestion alone.
Choose which feature to limit
Keep Smart Compose, but remove personalization
On a computer, go to Settings → See all settings → General → Smart Compose personalization and turn personalization off. Smart Compose can still offer generic suggestions; Google says, “When personalization is turned off, you see generic suggestions as you type.” Smart Compose’s setting is account-level, and changes apply on devices signed in to that account.

Turn off Smart Compose
Smart Compose has its own on/off setting in Gmail’s General settings. Use this if you want to stop the writing suggestions rather than merely make them generic. The Gmail Help material describes the setting but does not establish one universal label or path for every device and rollout.
Turn off Smart Reply
Smart Reply also has its own setting in Gmail’s General settings. It refers to short, pre-written reply suggestions. Google distinguishes these from longer Suggested Replies, which use Gemini in Gmail; changing the Smart Reply setting should not be treated as a switch for every Gemini-generated response.

The settings are distinct, so disabling one does not stand in for disabling the others. If you want to preserve connected Workspace features, start with the narrower Gmail controls and review each available option before switching off the Workspace-wide setting.

If a setting is missing or changes do not appear
- Check account and rollout eligibility. Gemini features vary by account type, plan, platform, region, and rollout. Some require an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan; access for personal accounts may depend on Workspace Experiments or current rollout. Google’s availability page currently says personal Gmail access without a paid plan is limited to the US. Check the live Gemini feature availability information for the feature and account you use.
- Confirm which of the three controls you need. A missing or unchanged Gmail tool may be governed by the app-level setting rather than the Workspace-wide one, or vice versa.
- Update the Gmail app if needed. Google notes that some changes made on a computer may not be reflected in the mobile app, and advises updating Gmail if the app does not show a change notification.
- Allow for different labels and paths. Google says controls may differ by device and rollout, so the documented names or steps may not appear identically on every account.
