Use each platform’s built-in account controls rather than buying an accessory. PlayStation adult accounts can require the sign-in password at every checkout; PlayStation child accounts can be limited to a monthly spending limit of 0. Xbox can require the account passkey before a purchase. Nintendo parent or guardian accounts can disable eShop purchases and automatic renewal for supervised accounts. Nintendo purchases made inside phone or tablet apps must be restricted on that device separately.
The important distinction is that a credential prompt is not the same as a purchase ban. A password or passkey setting adds an approval step for an adult account, while a zero spending limit or Nintendo spending restriction can prevent a supervised account from spending through the covered store.
Which setting should you use?

How PlayStation purchase controls work
PlayStation has two different procedures, depending on whether the account is an adult account or a child account. Do not rely on the adult checkout-password option for a child account: PlayStation says that setting does not apply to child accounts.

Adult PlayStation account: require a password at checkout
This setting does not remove the store or delete a payment method. It makes the console or app ask for the password used to sign in whenever the account attempts a PlayStation Store purchase. Sony Interactive Entertainment describes the behavior this way: “The password screen appears whenever you make a purchase. Enter the password you use to sign in.”

- From Account Management: Sign in to Account Management, choose Payment Method, and turn on Require Password at Checkout.
- On PS5: Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Purchase Settings, then turn on Require Password at Checkout.
- On PS4: Open Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Wallet > Purchase Settings. Select Require Password for Purchases, then choose Yes.
- In the PlayStation App: Open PlayStation Store, open the menu, choose Payment Methods, and enable Require Password at Checkout.
PlayStation states that this preference applies to all devices used to access PlayStation Store with that account. That makes it useful when the same adult account is signed in on more than one console or in the mobile app. It still has two stated limits: it does not apply to child accounts, and it does not apply when funding the wallet.
PlayStation child account: set the spending limit to zero
For a child account, the family manager controls spending through Family Management. PlayStation says the monthly spending limit is set to 0 by default. Leaving it at zero prevents the child account from having an allowed monthly purchase budget; increasing it authorizes spending up to the amount selected by the family manager.
- Sign in to Account Management.
- Open Family Management.
- Select the child account.
- Edit Monthly Spending Limit and leave it at 0 to disallow spending, or enter the amount the family manager has approved.
On a PS5, the equivalent console route is Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > child > Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit. The family manager, rather than the child account, controls this value.

What to check after changing a PlayStation setting
- Test the account that will actually be used for the purchase. An adult checkout-password setting and a child monthly limit are different controls.
- If an adult account can still add money without a password prompt, remember that PlayStation excludes wallet funding from the checkout-password setting.
- If several devices are involved, confirm that they use the same PlayStation account. The checkout-password preference is account-wide across devices used for PlayStation Store access, not a separate switch on each console.
How to require a passkey for Xbox purchases
Xbox’s documented control adds an account passkey requirement before a purchase. It is an approval prompt, not a statement that every store transaction is permanently disabled. Use the account whose purchases you want to protect, and choose a passkey that other household members do not know.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Choose System > Settings > Account > Sign-in, security & passkey.
- Select Change my sign-in & security preferences.
- Choose Customize.
- Select Ask for my passkey to make purchases.
- Choose Passkey required.
After this change, the console requests the account passkey before a purchase proceeds. The supplied Xbox support procedure does not establish whether this setting also controls wallet funding or automatic renewal, so treat those as separate items to check if they are part of your household’s concern.
When the Xbox option is not working as expected
- Make sure you changed Ask for my passkey to make purchases, rather than a general sign-in preference that does not specifically require a purchase credential.
- Test a purchase attempt without completing it, and confirm that the passkey prompt appears before payment is authorized.
- If another person knows the account passkey, change the passkey or choose a different sign-in and security configuration before relying on the prompt as a restriction.
How to disable Nintendo eShop purchases and automatic renewal
Nintendo places these restrictions in the parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account. The procedure applies to Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch family management for child or supervised accounts.

- Sign in to the parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account.
- Select Family Group.
- Choose the supervised account you want to control.
- Open Spending Restrictions.
- Tick the option to disable purchases and automatic renewal options on Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and the official Nintendo website.
- Save the change.
Nintendo’s wording is explicit: “Spending Restrictions – Tick the box to disable purchases and automatic renewal options on Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and the official Nintendo website.” This is the closest of the three documented procedures to a direct purchase block because it disables the covered purchases and renewal options for the supervised account instead of merely asking for a credential.
Nintendo purchases made in phone or tablet apps
Nintendo distinguishes eShop and off-device purchases from purchases made inside smart-device apps. Restrictions on the supervised Nintendo Account do not by themselves control those in-app transactions. Open the phone or tablet’s own purchase-control settings and apply the device-level restriction there. This matters when a child plays a Nintendo-related mobile game or another app on a device that is not the Switch console.
What Nintendo’s restriction covers
- The parent or guardian manages the setting; the supervised account does not independently authorize it.
- The Nintendo guidance covers eShop purchases and off-device purchases for child and supervised accounts.
- Automatic renewal can be disabled through the same Spending Restrictions area.
- Smart-device app purchases remain a separate control on the relevant phone or tablet.
Credential prompt or purchase block: choose deliberately
Families often say “turn off in-game purchases” when they actually need one of two outcomes. If an adult account must remain able to buy occasionally, a password or passkey prompt creates a deliberate approval step. If a child account must not spend at all, use the platform’s family spending restriction rather than assuming a credential prompt applies.

A practical setup sequence for a family
Use this order when more than one console or account is involved. It avoids the common mistake of changing a setting on the wrong account.
- Identify the buying identity. Note the exact PlayStation, Microsoft or Nintendo Account that is signed in when the store purchase is made. A restriction on a parent account does not automatically become a restriction on a different account.
- Classify the account. Mark it as adult, child or supervised. PlayStation’s adult checkout setting is not the child-account control, while Nintendo’s Spending Restrictions are administered by the parent or guardian for a supervised account.
- Choose block versus approval. Use a zero limit or disabled spending restriction when no spending is allowed. Use a password or passkey requirement when an adult may still approve occasional purchases.
- Apply the platform-specific path. Follow the PS5, PS4, PlayStation App, Xbox or Nintendo route above rather than looking for a generic “in-game purchases” switch. The stores expose these controls under payment, security or family-management menus.
- Check related payment flows. On PlayStation, wallet funding is outside Require Password at Checkout. On Nintendo, automatic renewal is an explicit part of Spending Restrictions. For Xbox, the supplied procedure establishes the purchase-passkey prompt but does not specify wallet or renewal coverage.
- Test before handing over the device. Start a low-risk purchase flow and stop before confirming payment. You should see the expected password, passkey or restriction behavior for the account being tested.
- Secure the approval secret. Do not save a password or passkey where the person being restricted can retrieve it. The control only works if the approving credential remains private.
Troubleshooting common failures
A purchase still goes through without a prompt
First check the account identity. A console may contain several profiles, and the store can be using an adult account different from the one whose setting you edited. On PlayStation, also distinguish a wallet top-up from a store checkout: the checkout-password setting does not cover wallet funding. On Nintendo, check whether the transaction occurred in a smart-device app; that uses the device’s controls rather than the Nintendo Account restriction.

The child can still see paid content
Seeing a price, a store page or an in-game currency offer is not the same as being allowed to complete a purchase. Verify the PlayStation child’s Monthly Spending Limit or the Nintendo supervised account’s Spending Restrictions. These are family-management settings, not merely prompts displayed on an adult profile.

The setting appears to have disappeared after changing devices
PlayStation says Require Password at Checkout applies to all devices used to access PlayStation Store, so check that the second device is signed in to the same account. Nintendo family restrictions are administered through the parent or guardian Nintendo Account and apply to the covered eShop and website purchases for the supervised account. Xbox’s documented path is an account security setting reached from the console’s Account menu; return to that path if you need to verify the selection.
An automatic renewal was not stopped
Use Nintendo’s Spending Restrictions option, which explicitly includes automatic renewal. Do not assume that a generic password or passkey prompt has the same renewal coverage: the supplied Xbox procedure does not state that it does, and PlayStation’s checkout-password setting is specifically described around purchases and excludes wallet funding.
Costs, equipment and account ownership
These controls are first-party account settings and do not require a physical product. There is no separate purchase-control accessory, subscription or hardware key identified for the procedures above. The practical requirements are access to the correct adult, family-manager or parent/guardian account and the ability to sign in to the relevant console, app or account-management page.
