You have three different controls to choose from: block every in-app purchase, require a parent to approve a child’s request, or require authentication before an account owner can complete a purchase. On iPhone and iPad, use Screen Time to block spending and Family Sharing’s Ask to Buy for approval. On Android, use Google Play family purchase approvals for a child or Purchase verification for the account owner.
The settings below apply mainly to transactions processed through Apple or Google Play billing. An app’s external website, another payment processor, or an alternative app marketplace may require separate controls.

Blocking is absolute for the covered billing channel. Approval preserves a request-and-review process. Authentication asks for the account’s configured verification method but does not create a parent-child approval queue.

Block in-app purchases completely on an iPhone or iPad
Screen Time is the clearest option when the rule is no in-app spending at all. The restriction must be enabled before the in-app-purchase setting can prevent purchases.

Set the restriction
- Open Settings.
- Tap Screen Time. If it is off, tap Turn On Screen Time and complete the setup prompts.
- Open Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn the restrictions on.
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
- Tap In-app Purchases.
- Choose Don’t Allow. On some current Apple software screens, the equivalent choice is labeled Blocked.
After this change, an app using Apple’s in-app-purchase system should be unable to complete the transaction on that device. The setting does not uninstall apps, remove previously purchased content, or cancel subscriptions that already exist.
Protect the setting with a passcode
Create a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know. Without a separate passcode, anyone who can unlock the device may be able to change the restriction. Do not use a passcode that is obvious from the device owner’s birthday, a shared device PIN, or another code the child already knows.
Apple also provides a password requirement for future purchases as a separate control. That option can add authentication, but it is not the same as setting In-app Purchases to Don’t Allow or Blocked: a password prompt still permits a purchase when the correct credential is supplied.
When a block is the better choice
- There should be no spending from the device, even when a child asks.
- The device is shared and you cannot reliably supervise each purchase.
- You want a temporary freeze while checking subscriptions, receipts, or a payment account.
- You are dealing with repeated accidental taps rather than evaluating individual requests.
Require a parent’s approval on an iPhone or iPad
Apple’s Ask to Buy workflow is designed for a child who may request eligible app downloads or in-app purchases. Instead of silently completing the transaction, the child sends a request to the family organizer or a designated parent or guardian.

Turn on Ask to Buy
- On the adult’s Apple device, open Settings.
- Tap Family.
- Select the child’s name.
- Tap Apps & Websites.
- Tap Restrictions.
- Open Ask to Buy.
- Turn on Require Purchase Approval.
When the child attempts an eligible download or in-app purchase, the adult receives a request and can approve or decline it. An approval adds the item to the child’s Apple Account; a declined request does not complete the purchase or download.
Understand what Ask to Buy covers
Ask to Buy can cover eligible app downloads and in-app purchases, regardless of the app’s age rating. Apple notes that age, country, and region can affect defaults and availability, so the exact behavior may differ between family members or locations. Keep the family devices on current software when possible, particularly when a child’s request is not arriving.
Ask to Buy is not a blanket spending block. A parent can approve one request and decline the next. If every in-app purchase must be stopped, use the Screen Time restriction described above instead of relying on approval.

- The child is part of the correct Family Sharing group.
- The adult is the organizer or has been designated as a parent or guardian.
- Notifications are enabled on the adult’s device so requests are visible.
- The adult can authenticate purchases with the Apple Account credentials required by the approval prompt.
- The child’s device and the adult’s device are signed in to the intended Apple Accounts.
Require approval for a child’s in-app purchases on Android
Google Play family managers can set an approval scope for each family member. For the narrow goal of reviewing in-app spending, select Only in-app purchases. You can also require approval for all purchases charged to the family payment method or for all content covered by Google Play’s family controls.

Set the approval scope
- Open the Google Play app.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Family.
- Tap Manage family members.
- Select the family member whose purchases you want to control.
- Tap Purchase approvals.
- Choose one of the available scopes: Only in-app purchases, All purchases that use the family payment method, All content, or No approval required.
Choose Only in-app purchases when paid apps, movies, books, and other Google Play content should not be held for approval. Choose All purchases that use the family payment method when the family manager wants a broader payment review without necessarily covering every kind of content.
Review a request
The parent or family manager reviews the request and enters the Google Account password to approve it. Google sends the family manager an email receipt when a purchase is completed. Keep the password private; sharing it defeats the approval boundary.
These approvals apply to purchases made through Google Play billing. A game or service that sends the child to a browser, a separate payment page, or another billing system may not create a Google Play approval request.
Why the option may be missing
- The account is not in a Google family group.
- You are not signed in as the family manager or the appropriate parent account.
- The selected member is not configured as the child account you intend to supervise.
- The transaction is not being processed through Google Play billing.
- Google Play or Android is using a different account than the one that owns the family payment method.
Require authentication for purchases on an Android account
If the device belongs to you and the problem is accidental or unauthorized taps, Purchase verification is usually more appropriate than creating a child approval workflow. It asks for the account’s configured verification method at purchase time.

Enable Purchase verification
- Open Google Play.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions.
- Tap Purchase verification.
- Open Verification requirement or Verification frequency, depending on the wording shown on your device.
- Choose the desired verification option and confirm it.
Google describes purchase verification as a way to help prevent accidental or unauthorized purchases. Keep the Google Account password, screen lock, and biometric credential private from anyone who should not buy. Authentication is a gate, not a parent notification system: the person holding the credential can still complete the purchase.

Know the coverage limits
External web checkout
An app can open a browser or embedded web page and ask for payment outside Apple or Google billing. A device-level in-app-purchase restriction may not stop that transaction, and it may not generate a family approval request. Check the service’s own account, parental-control, or payment settings, and remove saved payment methods where appropriate.
Alternative app marketplaces
Apple warns that restricting in-app purchases may not prevent purchases in apps installed from alternative app marketplaces. The Apple setting is tied to Apple’s distribution and billing ecosystem, not every possible store or payment route.
Subscriptions and previous purchases
Turning on a restriction controls future covered transactions. It does not automatically cancel an existing subscription or reverse a completed charge. Review the relevant Apple or Google purchase history and subscription page separately if you need to stop recurring billing or request a refund.

Troubleshoot a control that is not working
The child can still see a buy button on Apple
A visible button does not prove that a purchase can complete. Confirm that Content & Privacy Restrictions is turned on and that In-app Purchases is set to Don’t Allow or Blocked. Test with a low-risk action only if you can do so without creating a charge. Also check whether the app is using an external web checkout, which is outside the Apple billing restriction.
Ask to Buy requests are not arriving
- Confirm the child is in the intended Family Sharing group.
- On the adult device, verify the path Settings > Family > child > Apps & Websites > Restrictions > Ask to Buy and make sure Require Purchase Approval is on.
- Check that the adult is the organizer or a designated parent/guardian.
- Check notification settings, internet connectivity, and the Apple Account signed in on each device.
- Install current software updates on the family devices when available.
- Consider age, country, and region rules if the setting behaves differently for a particular child or app.
Google Play does not show Purchase approvals
Purchase approvals are family controls, so verify that the account is in the correct Google family group and that you are managing the intended member. Recheck the path Google Play > profile picture > Settings > Family > Manage family members. If the purchase uses another billing system, Google Play may have no request to display.
A Google Play purchase still completes without a prompt
Open Google Play > profile picture > Payments & subscriptions > Purchase verification and review the verification setting for the account making the purchase. For a child account, also verify the family member’s approval scope. A family approval rule and an individual verification rule solve different problems; one does not automatically replace the other.

Apple and Google change labels and menu placement across operating-system versions, account types, and regions. Look for the same control under Screen Time, Family, Content & Privacy Restrictions, Purchase approvals, or Purchase verification. On Apple devices, Blocked may replace Don’t Allow as the final value for the in-app-purchase restriction.
A practical setup for a child’s device
- Decide whether every purchase should be denied or whether the child may request individual purchases.
- For an absolute Apple block, enable Screen Time, set a private Screen Time passcode, and choose Don’t Allow or Blocked for in-app purchases.
- For Apple case-by-case decisions, configure Family Sharing and turn on Require Purchase Approval under Ask to Buy.
- For Android case-by-case decisions, place the child in the correct Google family group and select Only in-app purchases unless you intentionally want broader approval.
- Keep the adult Apple Account or Google Account credentials private.
- Check for web checkout, alternative marketplaces, and existing subscriptions; handle those at the service or payment-account level.
- Explain to the child what happens when a request is declined and where legitimate requests should be sent.
Which setting should you use?
Use Apple Screen Time’s Don’t Allow or Blocked value when the requirement is zero in-app spending on the covered Apple billing route. Use Apple Ask to Buy when a parent wants to review eligible requests individually. On Android, choose Google Play’s Only in-app purchases for narrow family approval, expand the scope when other Google Play charges also need review, and use Purchase verification when the account owner simply needs an authentication barrier. For any route outside Apple or Google Play billing, apply controls through the service, payment account, or marketplace handling that transaction.
