1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo turn off scene-based adjustments, switch off Scene optimizer in the Camera app’s settings. To disable automatic HDR, use Camera Assistant > Auto HDR > Off if your Galaxy offers that control. They are separate settings: switching off Scene optimizer does not necessarily turn off HDR or other image processing.
Turn off Scene optimizer
-
Open the Camera app and open its settings. On the Galaxy S26, tap Quick controls (the four-dot icon), then tap Settings.
-
Look for Scene optimizer. It may appear under Intelligent optimization or an image-quality enhancement menu, depending on the phone and software.
-
Switch Scene optimizer off.
Samsung describes Scene optimizer as a feature that recognizes a scene or subject and adjusts image effects and quality. Depending on the device, those adjustments can include exposure, contrast, and white balance. Samsung says the feature is available with the rear camera on the Galaxy S26; availability and scene options vary across models. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 guide and Samsung Japan’s Scene optimizer help show examples of the setting and its varying menu labels.

Turn off Auto HDR
-
Open Camera Assistant if it is installed and available on your phone.
-
Find Auto HDR and switch it off.
Camera Assistant availability and the Auto HDR switch are not established for every Galaxy model, region, or firmware version. If you do not see the control, check whether Camera Assistant is available for your device and software. Samsung also documents Pro mode as a route for taking photos without HDR; supported devices may offer an Auto HDR control in Expert RAW. On some models older than the S22, Camera settings may instead include HDR or Rich tone. Samsung’s HDR and camera AI guidance explains these alternatives.

Reduce processing in Photo mode
If you want less automatic processing beyond scene recognition and HDR, Samsung’s January 27, 2026 post-processing FAQ recommends switching off Scene optimizer and setting Quality optimisation to Minimum in Photo mode. Samsung says Minimum reduces the number of frames used for image improvement and can increase shooting speed, with a corresponding difference in processing and image quality. The exact setting availability and wording can vary by device and software. Samsung Europe’s post-processing FAQ describes this option and also recommends turning off Picture softening if the aim is to avoid automatic correction.
Which setting should you change?
| Option | What it changes | Availability and tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Scene optimizer off | Stops the specific scene-recognition adjustments made by Scene optimizer; it does not establish that HDR or all computational processing is off. | Found in Camera settings, but the parent menu and availability vary by model and software. Samsung’s Japan support page notes that menu names and placement can differ. |
| Auto HDR off | Turns off the Auto HDR control in Camera Assistant, if offered. | Camera Assistant and this control are not available on every model or software version. Samsung’s post-processing FAQ identifies the setting. |
| Quality optimisation: Minimum | Reduces the number of frames used for Photo-mode image improvement. | Samsung says it can increase shooting speed, with a difference in processing and image quality. See its post-processing FAQ. |
| Pro mode | Samsung identifies this as a way to capture photos without HDR. | Use it when the Auto HDR switch is unavailable and you need an HDR-free capture path. Samsung’s HDR guidance describes this option. |
If the settings are missing or the saved photo still looks different
-
Check nearby menu labels. Look under Intelligent optimization, image-quality enhancement, or the Camera settings search/menu options. Samsung cautions that labels and placement differ by model and Android version.

Confirm the symptom. Capture processing and how a saved image is displayed in Gallery are not necessarily the same issue. A Samsung Community discussion describes a separate Gallery HDR viewing setting, but this is not a universal capture-setting instruction; verify the behavior on your phone. Samsung’s post-processing FAQ addresses differences between the camera preview and final image.
-
Use the control available on your model. Samsung says HDR became active by default in the regular camera path on One UI 4.0 and later, and points to Pro mode, Camera Assistant, or Expert RAW controls as applicable. A missing HDR switch after a software update does not mean Scene optimizer controls HDR.

Samsung UK notes that Scene Optimiser has been included in Galaxy cameras since the Galaxy S10 and that the S21 series added moon recognition to the feature. Turning it off disables that particular scene-based enhancement; it is not a guarantee that all computational photography stops. Samsung UK’s camera AI support article covers the feature.
