If the block is tied to your Google Account’s Advanced Protection Program enrollment instead, you’ll need to remove the account from the device or unenroll it separately. These are different controls, and turning off Device protection alone may not remove account-level restrictions.
First identify which protection is blocking you
Android’s Device protection setting and the Google Account Advanced Protection Program are related but separate. Device protection is controlled in Android settings. Account enrollment applies extra security to your Google Account and Google products; some restrictions can remain while the account is enrolled, even after Device protection is switched off.
If you are unsure which one applies, check the phone’s Advanced Protection page first. Menu wording varies by manufacturer and Android version; searching Settings for “Advanced Protection” may be the quickest way to find it.
Turn off Device protection on Android
- Open Settings on your Android phone.
- Go to Security & Privacy > Other settings > Advanced Protection. On some devices, you can instead open Google settings > All services > Personal and device safety > Advanced Protection.
- Under Advanced Protection, switch off Device protection.
- Authenticate with your device PIN or biometrics. If prompted to continue because your account is enrolled in Account protection, tap Continue before authenticating.
- Restart the phone if prompted. Google says a reboot may be needed to revert some security settings.
If neither route matches your phone, use Settings search for “Advanced Protection.” Manufacturer interfaces and menu labels can differ.

If your Google Account is still enrolled
Google documents two account-level options: remove the enrolled Google Account from the Android device, or unenroll the account from the Advanced Protection Program in Google Account security settings. Either route requires force-stopping the Google Play Store as part of the documented process. Google says automatic protections can take up to 24 hours to stop after removal or unenrollment. Unenrolling removes the increased security for that Google Account and the Google products used with it.

What changes when protection is disabled
With Device protection on, Android blocks installations from unknown sources and updates for apps originally installed from unknown sources. Google Play Protect also cannot be turned off while Device protection remains on. Google Account enrollment has its own restrictions: most sources outside Google Play are blocked, although Google Play, Android Debug Bridge (adb), and preinstalled Android app stores are permitted. Non-Play apps already installed are not removed and continue to receive updates.
Advanced Protection also groups together several defenses, rather than acting as a single APK-install permission. Google lists Play Protect scanning, restrictions on unknown apps and accessibility services, Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) for supported apps, Android Safe Browsing, Chrome HTTPS enforcement where possible, changes to Chrome’s JavaScript optimizer, and WebGPU being turned off in Chrome. MTE can affect performance in supported apps. Device protection can also enable USB Protection on supported phones; Google says that feature is available on Pixel 6 and later and turns on automatically when Device protection is enabled.

- Confirm the APK comes from the app developer’s genuine, official source. Be especially cautious with download mirrors or links sent by someone else.
- Consider whether the app is essential and whether you trust its developer. Google warns that apps from unknown sources may not be vetted and can carry a higher risk of harm.
- Disable protection only for the task you need to complete. Once finished, consider turning Device protection back on.
Turning off protection changes the security barrier; it does not establish that a particular APK is safe. If you cannot verify the source or do not trust the developer, do not install the file.
