Some controls hide an entry point or change a results view; others limit permissions, saved activity, personalization, or model training. The steps below identify what each control changes—and what it does not.
Which setting should you use?
Choose the control that matches what you want to stop. Turning off data use is not the same as removing a feature, and hiding an assistant button may leave its underlying capabilities available.

Google Search: what can and cannot be switched off
Google Search Help describes AI Overviews as a core Search feature, like knowledge panels, and says features cannot be turned off. The Web filter is the practical alternative when you want a text-based links view. The separate AI in Search switch in Search Labs applies to that experiment only, so it should not be mistaken for a master AI setting.
Google also cautions that AI Overviews can make mistakes and recommends checking important information in more than one place.

Google’s Gemini controls are separate
In desktop Chrome, the Gemini in Chrome settings separate visibility from permissions. Hiding Gemini at the top of the browser changes its entry point; the permission controls determine whether it can use specific capabilities such as the microphone or current tab. Review each permission individually if your concern is access rather than visibility. Availability may depend on country or territory because Google is rolling the feature out over time.
Gemini Apps Activity is a different kind of control: it concerns account activity and its auto-delete period. Google Safety Center gives an 18-month default auto-delete period (accessed 2026), but its cited guidance does not say that turning activity off removes Gemini features elsewhere.

ChatGPT: distinguish training, history, memory, and temporary use
OpenAI’s Data controls setting Improve the model for everyone affects model training for new conversations. OpenAI says, “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” It does not erase existing or new chats from history, and it is separate from memory controls.
Temporary Chat is a different mode, not a replacement label for the training switch: OpenAI says temporary conversations do not appear in history, create or update memories, or get used to improve its models while temporary. The OpenAI Help Center says they may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes (accessed 2026).

Microsoft Copilot: check which app and version you have
Microsoft maintains separate instructions for its updated and older Copilot apps. The Settings > Personalization path in the table is for the updated app available from August 18, 2026; Microsoft directs users of the older app to a separate help page. Do not apply those updated-app labels to an older interface.
If you switch off Saved memories, use Manage and Delete all memories to remove memories already stored. Microsoft also describes independent controls for shared experiences, chat history, and personalized advertising, so changing memory or Web search alone does not change those settings.

Windows Copilot app management is not a Windows-wide AI switch
Microsoft Learn’s uninstall and AppLocker options are for enterprise app management. Microsoft advises using AppLocker instead of the legacy Turn Off Windows Copilot policy, which is subject to near-term deprecation. Blocking or uninstalling this consumer app should not be interpreted as disabling every AI feature built into Windows or other Microsoft services.

Associated Press reporting described a mute control in Facebook and Instagram, with options to mute for a limited period or until changed. AP also reported that muting did not remove the Meta AI entry point and that there was no single button to turn off Meta AI across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Because the report included 2024 screenshots and is not current official Meta documentation, the exact control name and placement may have changed; check the current app interface.

Before you change a setting
- Identify whether the issue is an assistant entry point, a specific AI feature, an app permission, saved activity, personalization, or model training.
- Check the platform and app version first; desktop Chrome, the updated Copilot app, and older Copilot interfaces do not share one set of instructions.
- After changing a control, confirm its scope in the service’s own settings or help text. A control described as mute, hide, history, activity, or training should not be assumed to disable unrelated AI features.
