Check the phone’s model, operating-system version, storage, and each game’s requirements; then connect a compatible controller and confirm that the game accepts controller input. Reusing a controller you already own is often the simplest way to start.
Check what the phone and games support
Find the phone’s model and operating-system version in its settings, then check the current requirements for the games you plan to play. An older phone may lack a supported OS version, enough free storage, or the performance a particular game requires. There is no universal minimum phone specification that guarantees every game will work.
Controller pairing is a separate question from game compatibility. A controller may connect successfully while a game ignores gamepad input. Game developers implement controller support, and Android’s developer guidance recommends testing across devices. Android Developers explains game-controller input support.
Connect a controller
On Android: pair over Bluetooth or use a wired connection
Google documents both wired and Bluetooth controller connections on Android. To pair over Bluetooth, put the controller into pairing mode, then open Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device and select it. Android’s controller settings can also let you change button or joystick assignments. Menu names may vary by device or Android version. See Google’s Android controller setup instructions.

On iPhone: use Bluetooth or a compatible wired connection
For Bluetooth, put the controller in pairing mode and open Settings → Bluetooth on the iPhone. A wired controller may require an adapter, depending on the iPhone model and controller. Apple’s iPhone guide covers compatible wired connections and adapters: connect a game controller to iPhone.
Check the exact controller and mobile features
Existing Xbox or PlayStation controllers may pair with compatible phones, but support depends on the controller revision and phone OS. Samsung’s Galaxy guidance describes pairing Xbox and PlayStation Bluetooth controllers, as well as Moga and generic controllers: Samsung’s Galaxy controller instructions. Sony lists DualSense Bluetooth support from Android 12 and iOS 14.5, while noting that mobile devices do not support some features, including adaptive triggers and haptics: Sony’s DualSense compatibility information.

Apple also cautions that available controller features vary by controller and app. Do not assume that pairing enables every special feature—or that every game accepts controller input. Check Apple’s controller compatibility guidance.
Choose a setup that fits the phone
Before buying an accessory, try a compatible controller you already own. If you do need one, compare connection type, connector or adapter needs, phone and OS compatibility, the games you intend to play, and which controller features work on mobile.

- Bluetooth controller: Works without a direct connection to the phone’s port, but must be compatible and charged.
- Wired controller: Avoids Bluetooth pairing, but may need the correct connector or an adapter, especially on iPhone.
- Telescopic controller: Check the phone’s dimensions, port placement, case clearance, and the controller maker’s compatibility list before ordering. A model’s fit cannot be assumed from the fact that the phone supports game controllers.
- Controller plus stand or clip: Keeps the controller separate from the phone. Check that any mount suits the phone; no particular mount is established as compatible with every device.
Start by pairing the controller and testing it in a game that explicitly supports gamepad input. That confirms the essential combination before you spend money on a specialized mount or adapter.

Cloud gaming may let a phone play games streamed from a service rather than run locally, but it is not guaranteed to work on every older phone. Samsung describes Xbox cloud gaming with a compatible controller on Galaxy phones: Samsung’s Galaxy cloud-gaming guidance. Check the service provider’s current device requirements, availability in your location, network requirements, terms, and game catalog before relying on it; Samsung’s page is not a complete, current statement of those details.
