To switch between 24-hour time and a 12-hour clock, change the display-format setting—not the device’s clock time or time zone. On iPhone, use Settings > General > Date & Time. Google’s documented Android route is through the Clock app: Clock > More > Settings > Change date & time.
Change the time format on an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Date & Time.
- Switch 24-Hour Time on to use the 24-hour clock, or off to return to the 12-hour display with AM and PM. This setting changes how the time is shown; it is separate from changing the date, clock time, or time zone. Apple’s iPhone instructions describe this toggle.
Change the time format on Android
- Open the phone’s Clock app.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Tap Change date & time.
- Tap Use 24-hour format to switch to a 24-hour display. Turn it off to restore a 12-hour display with AM/PM. This changes the display format, not the actual time or time zone. Google’s Android Clock instructions document this route.
If the Android setting is missing or unavailable
Android menus can differ by manufacturer and software version. Google’s instructions describe its Clock app, so the same labels may not appear on every phone. Search Settings for “time” or “date and time,” or consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.
If Use 24-hour format appears greyed out, one Google Pixel Community answer suggests checking whether Use locale default is enabled. This is a troubleshooting lead from a community discussion, not a rule established for all Android devices. The discussion, titled “Am/pm on clock,” was posted on Nov. 15, 2023.
