Start by confirming that the exact JVM running in your container recognizes its memory and CPU limits. Then choose a heap ceiling that leaves room under the container’s memory limit for native memory, thread stacks, metaspace, direct buffers, and any other processes. Use G1 as the starting point, measure it under representative load, and change settings only to address an observed problem. Consider ZGC when low latency is a primary requirement and the deployed JDK supports it.

Why container memory limits change GC tuning

The Java heap is only part of a JVM process’s memory use. The container also needs room for native memory, thread stacks, metaspace, direct buffers, and any co-located processes. Setting a heap limit equal to the container limit can therefore leave insufficient room for the rest of the process. The available documentation does not establish one safe heap percentage for every application or container.

Container awareness depends on the runtime, version, platform, and container setup. OpenJDK documents Linux container support that detects memory and processor availability; its launcher documentation describes -Xlog:os+container=trace for inspecting what the runtime detects. Check the deployed JVM rather than assuming that a configured container limit is visible to it. OpenJDK Java launcher documentation

Record the exact JDK vendor and build as well as the container’s memory and CPU limits. The relevant Oracle guidance covers Java SE 21, 26, and 27, while the OpenJDK launcher page tracks the moving main branch. Defaults and supported options can differ by release and vendor.

Choose a baseline collector and heap-sizing approach

Start with G1 unless your measurements point elsewhere

Oracle’s general recommendation is to use G1 with its default settings, then consider a different pause-time goal or a maximum heap size set with -Xmx. Oracle HotSpot Virtual Machine Garbage Collection Tuning Guide, Release 21

For G1, Oracle documents -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200 as an ergonomic pause-time target. It is not a promise that every observed pause will be at or below 200 ms, nor an application latency SLA. G1 adjusts heap use based on observed behavior, so evaluate the target against GC logs and service-level measurements. Oracle Java SE 26 G1 guide

Compare G1 and ZGC on the same workload

Collector When to evaluate it Tuning and evidence
G1 A sensible baseline for general workloads, following Oracle’s recommendation to begin with defaults. Measure pauses, throughput, heap behavior, and process/container memory. The documented 200 ms pause goal is a target, not a guaranteed maximum. Oracle Release 21 guide Oracle Java SE 26 G1 guide
ZGC Consider it when low latency is a primary requirement and the deployed JDK provides it. The cited Java SE 21 guide positions ZGC for low latency and identifies -Xmx as its main tuning control. Compare latency, throughput, and memory use against G1 under the same workload and budget. Oracle ZGC guide

The documentation does not establish that ZGC is universally faster or better for containerized applications. The decision depends on measured behavior, memory budget, and support in the exact JDK build.

Choose fixed heap bounds or percentage-based sizing

Approach What it controls Trade-off to consider
-Xmx, optionally paired with -Xms -Xmx sets the maximum Java heap; -Xms sets its initial size. Fixed bounds can improve predictability, according to Oracle, but may not suit every memory-constrained workload. The right values depend on measured non-heap use and the container budget. Oracle ergonomics guide
-XX:MaxRAMPercentage Sets the maximum heap as a percentage of memory available to the JVM. Its usefulness depends on the JVM detecting the resources that should inform sizing, and the remaining container memory still has to cover non-heap use and other processes. The current OpenJDK main-branch launcher documentation lists a 25 percent default; confirm the default for the deployed vendor and JDK release. OpenJDK Java launcher documentation

Neither approach determines a universally safe heap size. Oracle notes that GC performance is affected by multiple factors; size against observed behavior and the actual process budget rather than treating a percentage as a substitute for measurement. Oracle Java SE 27 performance factors guide

A measured tuning workflow

  1. Record the runtime and limits. Note the JDK vendor and build, collector in use, container memory and CPU limits, and whether other processes share the container. These details determine which flags and defaults apply.
  2. Check resource detection. On OpenJDK/Linux, add -Xlog:os+container=trace to the deployed JVM’s startup options and inspect the container resource values it reports. Compare them with the configured limits. Do not assume detection behavior is identical on every platform or runtime. OpenJDK Java launcher documentation
  3. Capture a baseline with G1 defaults. Run representative application load and collect GC logs alongside service measurements. Track pause distributions, throughput, heap occupancy and allocation behavior, process RSS or container memory, and OOM kills. A short or unrepresentative run is not enough to judge the effect of a tuning change.
  4. Set a heap ceiling that fits the process budget. Use -Xmx for a fixed maximum or -XX:MaxRAMPercentage when percentage-based sizing fits your deployment. Leave measured headroom for non-heap memory and other processes. If considering fixed -Xms and -Xmx, account for the fact that fixed bounds can improve predictability but are not right for every constrained workload. Oracle ergonomics guide Oracle Java SE 27 performance factors guide
  5. Inspect the relevant GC detail. For G1 phase detail, use -Xlog:gc+phases=debug. Interpret it alongside service latency and memory measurements rather than optimizing an isolated log value. Oracle Java SE 26 G1 guide
  6. Change one control at a time. If G1 misses a measured pause objective, adjust a relevant setting—such as the pause-time target or heap bound—and repeat the same workload. Compare the result with the baseline; do not treat -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200 as a guaranteed maximum pause.
  7. Evaluate ZGC when latency warrants it. If low latency is central to the service and the deployed JDK includes ZGC, run both collectors against the same workload and memory budget. Compare latency, throughput, and memory use; the Java SE 21 guide identifies -Xmx as ZGC’s main tuning control. Oracle ZGC guide
  8. Keep the configuration with its evidence. Record the JDK build, workload, container limits, chosen settings, and observed results. Reassess after a runtime, workload, or resource-limit change.

How to interpret common tuning outcomes

  • Container memory is exceeded or the process is OOM-killed: Check what memory the JVM detects and review total process/container memory, not just heap occupancy. The heap ceiling must leave room for non-heap use and any other process.
  • G1 pauses miss the service objective: Use GC phase logs and service measurements to identify whether a change helps under representative load. The documented pause-time goal is an ergonomic target, not a hard latency guarantee.
  • Latency is the dominant concern: Test ZGC if it is available in the deployed JDK, but compare it with G1 under the same workload rather than assuming a collector switch will improve the service.
  • A percentage-based heap seems unexpectedly large or small: Verify the resources detected by the actual runtime and confirm the option’s default and behavior for that vendor and build. The OpenJDK main-branch default is not evidence of the default in every JDK distribution.
