Borderless Gaming provides the setup and configuration interface; it does not include DLSS5-NR or add official DLSS 5 support to games. The separate effect is installed from GitHub and applied as a visual effect.
What the Steam tool does—and what it doesn’t
The app in this setup is Borderless Gaming, a utility available through Steam. The effect itself is a separate project, DLSS5-NR for Borderless Gaming. Its developer describes it as “DLSS5 Neural Rendering ported to BGFX.”
That distinction matters: this is a community experiment, not native DLSS 5 integration by a game developer. It does not make a game officially support DLSS 5, and the effect’s appearance and performance can vary with the game and graphics settings.
Install and enable the DLSS5-NR effect
- Install Borderless Gaming through Steam.
- Open Borderless Gaming’s effects editor.
- Choose Install from GitHub and enter https://github.com/andrewmd5/bgfx-dlss5-nr.
- Select the DLSS5-NR preset and enable effects.
- If you’re using Windows, set scaling to Scaling (GPU), as directed by the project README.
- Start with the included settings, then adjust them to suit the game and the image you want.
The developer says Borderless Gaming handles downloading and setup for this route, without manual DLL copying, game-file changes, or extra tools. That is the developer’s description of its installation method, not independent verification.

What to expect from compatibility and performance
TechRadar reports the developer’s claim that the effect can work with a broad range of GPUs, and relays a developer-reported example of around 30 fps on an RTX 3090. That figure is not an independently tested benchmark, and it is not a performance promise: results depend on the game and settings. The available reporting does not establish that the effect generally increases frame rates or that a particular GPU is required.
For any game you try, assess whether the effect runs, whether its image changes look acceptable to you, and how it affects performance on your system. There are no controlled side-by-side results establishing how it compares across games with native support or with other community tools.

How this differs from native DLSS 5 support
Native support is an integration made by the game developer. DLSS5-NR, by contrast, is a third-party effect applied through Borderless Gaming. Even if it works in a particular game, that does not make the result equivalent to the game’s own implementation. TechRadar also advises caution when using third-party apps, so consider that trade-off before installing one.
